Mayer: Top DOJ Lawyers Spoke ‘In Codes’ For Fear Of Being Wiretapped By White House ‘Lunatics’

Last night on PBS, Bill Moyers interviewed investigative journalist Jane Mayer and mentioned that in Mayer’s new book, she notes that FBI agents refused to participate in the CIA’s interrogation of terror suspects at Guantánamo Bay because they determined it to be “borderline torture.”
-
Moyers then asked, “Who were some of the other conservative heroes, as you call them, in your book?”
-
Mayer remembered one top Justice Department lawyer and “very conservative member of this administration” who said that after participating in White House meetings authorizing torture, he believed that “lunatics had taken over the country.”
-
Mayer said two other top DOJ lawyers had to develop a system of speaking codes because they feared they were being wiretapped while others described an “atmosphere of intimidation,” mainly from Vice President Dick Cheney:
-
MAYER: There was such an atmosphere of intimidation. … They felt so endangered in some ways that, at one point, two of the top lawyers from the Justice Department developed this system of talking in codes to each other because they thought they might be being wiretapped…by their own government.
-
They felt like they might be kind of weirdly in physical danger. They were actually scared to stand up to Vice President Cheney.
-
Mayer later said that “there is a paper trail” documenting U.S. torture policies “that goes right to the top of our govenment” and that Congress “is beginning to” get to the truth and “piece it together.”
-
Mayer added that the truth to the White House policies is “a humungous jigsaw puzzle” because “there are many, many secrets we still don’t know. There are legal memos that nobody’s ever seen.”

Anti-War Website Operator Threatened By Armed Thugs

Information Clearing House editor victim of home invasions, warnings to “stop what he is doing on the Internet, NOW!”

-
-
The operator of a leading alternative news and strongly anti-war website has become the target of nefarious thugs apparently in the employ of the U.S. government who have continually harassed him and ordered him to shut down his website.
-
Tom Feeley, owner and editor of InformationClearingHouse.info, has endured public harassment, home invasions, death threats and threats to his family simply for running a website.
-
Counterpunch writer Mike Whitney has circulated an e mail describing what happened to Feeley in an attempt to draw attention to the matter.
-
Whitney writes that earlier this week Feeley’s wife was startled to suddenly discover three well dressed men standing in her kitchen who told her that Tom must “Stop what he is doing on the Internet, NOW!”
-
To emphasize the point, the thug pulled back his jacket to reveal a gun while barking out the warning.
-
Tom’s wife was hysterical and refuses to go back to the house.
-
She contacted the FBI but was told there was nothing they could do.
-
According to Whitney, “The well-dressed man told Tom’s wife that he knew where her son lived, what line of work he was in, and how many children he had.”
-
Subsequently, two men in a parked car a block from Tom’s mother’s house were spotted using laptops and sped off when they were approached by Tom’s son.
-
A similar incident had happened four years previously, when Feeley was approached by a stranger in the parking lot of Long’s Drug store in Southern California, after being forced to remain in his car by an accomplice who blocked him from opening the car door.
-
The man told him, “You need to stop what you are doing on the web”.
-
Tom said the man was overweight and had his shirt untucked.
-
Tom was taken aback, but (after collecting himself said) “What the fuck? Who do you think you are telling me what I can do?”
-
The man answered, “Tom, I’m just giving you some good advice. You should take my advice, Tom.”
-
Alex Jones has experienced similar intimidation tactics on several occasions in the past, particularly the scenario that happened to Tom in the parking lot as well as thinly veiled threats against his family.
-
In every single instance, the best response is to stand up and be vocal in the face of such harassment.
-
Mafia-like thugs only continue to feed on those who put up with such treatment. The most dangerous thing to do is cower and acquiesce to the will of tyrants.
-
These kind of tactics will only succeed if the thugs think their actions can have any kind of effect. Every time someone in our movement is intimidated or harassed, we should respond only by re-doubling and intensifying our efforts.
-
I’ll tell you this about Tom Feeley; he is no bullshitter,” writes Whitney, “He is the “real deal” and completely committed to exposing the mob that is presently running our country.
-
He does not understand why, (as he says) “They are reaching down SO far to get someone who just runs web site”. But, the truth is, they are.
-
Someone wants him to “shut up” and they apparently have the muscle to do it. He knows he is in danger.”
-
Feeley is ditching his cellphone and maintaining a low profile but to his credit, refuses to cave in to the threats and will continue to publish his website.
-
Drawing attention to Feeley’s situation is of paramount importance to ensure his protection and also to combat head on attempts to create a chilling atmosphere and intimidate journalists and website publishers.
-
I really hope some folks have some plans to mirror his site! It would be a crying shame if his ISP were given orders to shut it all down! Mirrors everyone! I would like to see what I can do. however, I am still working from a “free” hosting account. Another idea, how about someone showing the gentleman how to use TOR/VIDALIA on his internet connection. It is open source, and very effective concerning privacy issues and net-tracking.
Another sad day in America indeed!

Law Professor: Counter Terrorism Czar Told Me There Is
Going To Be An i-9/11 And An i-Patriot Act - 36 more annotations...

-
Stanford Law professor Lawrence Lessig details government
plans to overhaul and restrict the Internet
<!--end--> -
-
Amazing revelations have emerged concerning already existing government
plans to overhaul the way the internet functions in order to apply
much greater restrictions and control over the web. -
Lawrence Lessig, a respected Law Professor from
Stanford University told an audience at this years Fortune’s
Brainstorm Tech conference in Half Moon Bay, California, that
"There’s going to be an i-9/11 event" which will
act as a catalyst for a radical reworking of the law pertaining
to the internet. -
Lessig also revealed that he had learned, during
a dinner with former government Counter Terrorism Czar Richard
Clarke, that there is already in existence a cyber
equivalent of the Patriot Act, an "i-Patriot Act" if
you will, and that the Justice Department is waiting for a cyber
terrorism event in order to implement its provisions. -
During a group panel segment titled "2018:
Life on the Net", Lessig stated: -
Which
doesn't necessarily mean an Al Qaeda attack, it means an event
where the instability or the insecurity of the internet becomes
manifest during a malicious event which then inspires the government
into a response. -
There’s going to be an i-9/11 event.
-
You've got to remember that after 9/11 the
government drew up the Patriot Act within 20 days and it was
passed. -
The Patriot Act is huge and I remember someone
asking a Justice Department official how did they write such
a large statute so quickly, and of course the answer was that
it has been sitting in the drawers of the Justice Department
for the last 20 years waiting for the event where they would
pull it out. -
Of course, the Patriot Act is filled with all
sorts of insanity about changing the way civil rights are protected,
or not protected in this instance. -
So I was having dinner with
Richard Clarke and I asked him if there is an equivalent, is
there an i-Patriot Act just sitting waiting for some substantial
event as an excuse to radically change the way the internet
works. He said "of course there is". -
Watch Lessig reveal the details at 4.30 into the
following video: -
Lessig is the founder of Stanford Law School's Center
for Internet and Society. He is founding board member of
Creative Commons and is a board member of the Electronic Frontier
Foundation and of the Software Freedom Law Center. -
He is best
known as a proponent of reduced legal restrictions on copyright,
trademark and radio frequency spectrum, particularly in technology
applications. -
These are clearly not the ravings of some paranoid
cyber geek. -
The Patriot Act, as well as its lesser known follow
up the Domestic Security Enhancement Act 2003, also known as USA
Patriot Act II, have been universally decried by civil libertarians
and Constitutional scholars from across the political spectrum. -
They have stripped back basic rights and handed what have been
described by even the most moderate critics as "dictatorial
control" over to the president and the federal government. -
Many believed that the legislation was a response
to the attacks of 9/11, but the reality was that the Patriot Act
was prepared way in advance of 9/11 and it sat dormant, awaiting
an event to justify its implementation. -
In the days after the attacks it was passed in the
House by a majority of 357 to 66. -
It passed the Senate by 98 to
1. -
Congressman Ron Paul (R-Tex) told the Washington Times that
no member of Congress was even allowed to read the legislation. -
Now we discover that exactly the same freedom restricting
legislation has already been prepared for the cyber world. -
An i-9/11, as described by Lawrence Lessig, would
provide the perfect pretext to implement such restrictions in
one swift motion, as well as provide the justification for relegating
and eliminating specific content and information on the web. -
Such an event could come in the form of a major
viral attack, the hacking of a major city's security or transport
systems, or some other vital systems, or a combination of all
of these things. -
Considering the amount of unanswered questions
regarding 9/11 and all the indications that it was a covert false
flag operation, it isn't hard to imagine such an event being played
out in the cyber world. -
However, regardless of any i-9/11 or i-Patriot Act,
there is already a coordinated effort to stem the reach and influence
of the internet. -
We have tirelessly
warned of this general movement to restrict, censor,
control and eventually completely shut down the internet as we
know it, thereby killing the last real vestige of free speech
in the world today and eliminating the greatest communication
and information tool ever conceived. -
Our governments have reams of legislation penned
to put clamps on the web as we know it. -
Legislation such as the
PRO-IP
Act of 2007: H.R. 4279, that would create an IP czar
at the Department of Justice and the Intellectual
Property Enforcement Act of 2007: S. 522, which would
create an entire ‘Intellectual Property Enforcement Network’.
These are just two examples. -
In addition, we have already seen how the major
corporate websites and social networks are
decentralizing and coming together to implement overarching
identification, verification and access systems that have been
described by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg as "the beginning
of a movement and the beginning of an industry.” -
Some of these major tech companies have already
joined efforts in projects such as the Information
Card Foundation, which has proposed the creation
of a system of internet ID cards that will be required for internet
access. -
Of course, such a system would give those involved the
ability to track and control user activity much more effectively.
This is just one example. -
In addition, as we reported
yesterday, major transportation hubs like St. Pancras
International, as well as libraries, big businesses, hospitals
and other public outlets that offer wi-fi Internet, are blacklisting
alternative news websites and making them completely inaccessible
to their users. -
These precedents are merely the first indication
of what is planned for the Internet over the next 5-10 years,
with the traditional web becoming little more than a vast spy
database that catalogues people’s every activity and bombards
them with commercials, while those who comply with centralized
control and regulation of content will be free to enjoy the new
super-fast Internet
2. -
We must speak out about this rampant move to implement
strict control mechanisms on the web NOW before it is too late,
before the spine of the free internet is broken and its body essentially
becomes paralyzed beyond repair.

As federal agency declares 'new phenomenon' downed WTC 7, activists cry foul

-
According to a federal agency report released Thursday, a "new phenomenon" known as thermal expansion was directly responsible for the mysterious collapse of World Trade Center 7 on Sept. 11, 2001.
-
This study, posed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology -- a federal scientific agency which promotes technical industrial standards -- marks the first 'official' government theory on the collapse.
-
The building's demise occurred some seven hours after the twin towers collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001, and has been the source of numerous conspiracy theories key to the "9/11 Truth" movement, most of which argue that the symmetrical, seven-second collapse was brought about by a controlled demolition.
-
Dr. Shyam Sunder, director of Institute's building and fire research laboratory, oversaw the government's three-year research efforts. The report aims to disprove the controlled demolition argument.
-
However, Richard Gage, founder of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth and a member of the American Institute of Architects, doesn't believe a word of the theory.
His group, which has swelled to over 400 architectural and engineering professionals, immediately responded to the Institute's claim in a press conference. -
"Tons of [molten metal] was found 21 days after the attack," said Gage in an interview with a Vancouver, Canada television station. "Steel doesn't begin to melt until 2,700 degrees, which is much hotter than what these fires could have caused."
-
"There are holes in this story that you can drive a truck through," Gage added during the press conference.
-
His group asserts that thermite, a steel cutting agent, was used to bring the building down.
-
Dr. Sunder disagreed.
"We conducted the study without bias, without interference from anyone," said Dr. Sunder. -
"We have only one single-minded goal in this effort."
-
While the Institute said it considered the possibility of a controlled demolition taking place at WTC 7, the notion was dismissed due to the absence of any recordings of an explosion sound.
-
Thermite, however, does not make an explosion sound.
-
And while this was raised to Dr. Sunder in the media's Q&A session, he dismissed it as impossible.
-
"FEMA found it," said Gage. "Dr. Steven Jones found it, in the dust that landed in the entire area of lower Manhattan. And he finds it in the chunks of previously molten metal [from the towers]."
-
Specifically, in Appendix C of its World Trade Center Building Performance Study, FEMA claimed:
Evidence of a severe high temperature corrosion attack on the steel, including oxidation and sulfidation with subsequent intergranular melting, was readily visible in the near-surface microstructure. A liquid eutectic mixture containing primarily iron, oxygen, and sulfur formed during this hot corrosion attack on the steel... The severe corrosion and subsequent erosion of Samples 1 and 2 are a very unusual event. No clear explanation for the source of the sulfur has been identified.
-
Yet, no study of the mysterious sulfur or melted steel was included in the NIST report.
-
After New York City officials cut off the water main to the tower Sept. 11, 2001, the building's sprinkler system was unable to function, Dr. Sunder said. This allowed fires across 10 floors to burn uncontrolled for nearly seven hours.
-
The Institute asserts that due to the lack of water supply, an “extraordinary event” occurred, and for the first time ever, steel expanding due to heat from the flames caused columns to separate from structural concrete. Column 79 was the first to fail, according to the report, which brought about a quick succession of failures in adjoining columns.
-
"Thermal expansion of long-span floor systems" was a critical element in the collapse, said Dr. Sunder. The "kink" seen in the building's penthouse portion in video of the collapse was in-line with the columns which failed first.
-
"If water had been available, it is likely that sprinklers would have operated and the building may still be here today," he said.
-
"It looks like they want to wrap-up this investigation and blame [the collapse] on normal office fires," said Gage during counter-conference.
-
WTC 7's structural system is in "widespread use" in other buildings, he added, insisting that such effects may also be present elsewhere. The Institute's report also includes recommendations for the strengthening of building codes to avoid future thermal expansion-driven collapses.
The collapse of WTC 7 is "no longer a mystery," Dr. Sunder claimed. -
Further details from the Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth press conference are forthcoming.

Cindy Sheehan Bugged in Denver
- 23 more annotations...
-
-
by Rob Kall Page 1 of 2 page(s)
-
Cindy Sheehan returned to her Denver hotel room today to find the door unlocked and ajar. She walked in to discover a man working on her phone, screw driver in hand.
-
Sheehan reported, in an email,
-
"As I walked toward my room, I noticed that the door was opened with the security bolt blocking the complete closing of the door. I knew immediately that I had not left the door open, and I double checked to make sure it was the right room because, as a frequent traveler, I have been known to forget my room number, but it was the right room.
-
I was upset at first thinking that housekeeping had made a mistake and left my room open and I was worried that something might be missing.
-
So I walked into my room and bigger than life, there was a man standing by my desk holding the room phone with a screwdriver in his hand!
-
I immediately said; "What the hell are you doing? Are you putting a bug on my phone?"
-
He looked like he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and stammered out: "N--no, we are having problems with the phone."
-
I told him to get out of my room because my phone was fine and I called the front desk and the person at the front desk stammered something out about "problems" with some of the phones.
-
This room was reserved soon after we got to Denver last night because the room we had was inadequate for 3 people. The room was reserved under my campaign manager's name with a CFC debit card.
-
By the time we left for the march, it could have very well been ascertained that I was the one in this room, and the room we did reserve could be bugged, also. I am confident that that's what was happening when I walked in on the "maintenance" man"
-
You don't come in the room with a screwdriver if there are problems with the hotel phones. You do it electronically, through the system or you hook up a new phone.
-
She said to me, "How many hotel rooms have I been in the past four years? It was so obvious."
-
I asked, "Do you think it was Pelosi's people?" since Sheehan is running against Pelosi, for her congressional seat.
She replied, "Of course, I don't know." -
I asked, "Have there been any other episodes that would make you believe this kind of action is being taken against you?"
-
She replied,
"Not since I've been running for congress, but there were several times when I was in Crawford, or protesting in D.C., when I felt like we were being surveiled. And actually, in Washington D.C., for a period of time, they would just blatantly follow me, and I would just invite them to come in and have coffee with me.
-
Whenever I was in D.C., whose ever jurisdiction it was, I'd have either the Metro police, the Capitol Hill police or the Park police right on me. Sometimes they were in uniform and sometimes they were plainclothes. But they were very obvious.
-
Asked how her campaign is going, Sheehan replied,
-
"I believe the momentum is definitely on our side, especially the last couple weeks, with our signature drive.
-
The department of elections started to mess with our signatures and say that so many were in-valid, when we knew for a fact that they were valid, because I was checking them myself, on the computer.
-
We've had ten of thousands of dollars come into the campaign since then and we really have a comfortable amount of money to get our message out-- the message that our country is in deep trouble and Nancy is definitely not the solution. She's part of the problem.
-
And we're going to educate the people of San Francisco about this using alternative forms of media and convince them that I am the alternative-- that I will work to be the voice of the people of San Francisco. And that's something that she has not ever been. I think there is a lot of positive excitement and momentum. Her book tour didn't help her out any.
-
Asked about her goals for Denver, she described,
"after protesting the Republicans for so many years, the Democrats have been moving steadily to the right. We want to show that we're not okay with that, that we want to bring the party closer to the people and further from the corporate lobbyists.

Government Biological Weapons Legislator: Anthrax Inside Job Cover Up Continuing
-
Says criminal elements of the government “can and will” use bio-weapons to scare and terrorize Americans when it is politically convenient
- 36 more annotations...
-
-
-
A former government biological weapons legislator appeared on the nationally syndicated Alex Jones show yesterday to discuss his detailed knowledge of the cover up of the 2001 anthrax attacks,
-
which he is adamant were perpetrated by criminal elements of the US government in an attempt to foment a police state by killing off opposition to hardline post 9/11 legislation.
-
Dr Franics A. Boyle literally helped write the law with regards to terrorism, as he was responsible for drafting the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989 that was passed unanimously by both Houses of Congress and signed into law by President Bush Snr.
-
He holds a Doctor of Law Magna Cum Laude as well as a Ph.D. in Political Science, both from Harvard University. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Amnesty International (1988-1992), and represented Bosnia- Herzegovina at the World Court.
-
Professor Boyle teaches international law at the University of Illinois, Champaign.
-
In light of the latest developments with the FBI Anthrax investigation, the professor joined Alex Jones on air to re-cap the story that made waves in late 2006.
-
In October 2001 when the anthrax attacks took place and it was revealed that the spores were super weapons grade anthrax at one trillion spores per gram created with special electro-static treatment,
-
Dr Boyle says it became obvious to him that there was nowhere it could have come from other than a government lab.
-
Dr Boyle proceeded to call a very high level official in the FBI who deals with terrorism and counter-terrorism, Spike Bowman, whom he had met at a terrorism conference at the University of Michigan Law School.
-
Dr Boyle went through all the names, the contractors and the labs for Anthrax work with the FBI’s Bowman.
-
Bowman then informed Dr Boyle that the FBI was working with bio-lab Fort Detrick on the matter, to which he responded that Fort Detrick could really be the main problem.
-
“I told Mr Bowman in October of 2001 that the only people that had the capability to do this would be those individuals working at either United States Government labs, or private contractors and things of this nature, and it obviously seemed to me that this was U.S. government related.” the University of Illinois Professor told listeners.
-
It was documented at the time that the anthrax strain used was military grade.
-
This was later widely reported in 2002 in publications such as the New Scientist.
-
“At that point I assumed good faith on the part of the FBI in this investigation because it had killed several people, it had shut down the United States Congress, which I think was probably the greatest political crime ever inflicted on our Republic in its history.
-
But then I read that the FBI had authorized the destruction of the U.S. government’s Ames strain collection.” Boyle continued.
-
The destruction of the anthrax culture collection at Ames, IA., from which the Ft. Detrick lab got its pathogens for U.S. biowarfare programs, was blatant destruction of evidence as it meant that there was no way of finding out which strain was sent to who to develop the larger breed of anthrax used in the attacks.
-
The trail of genetic evidence would have led directly back to a secret but officially-sponsored US government biowarfare program that was illegal and criminal.
-
“I knew a cover up was underway because legitimate scientific researchers could have taken that collection and used it to genetically re-construct precisely where and when and how the weapon came from.
-
This was clearly a federal crime in its own right.” Boyle stated.
-
The Professor explained that the motive behind the
attacks was clear:"I believe the first anthrax attack was designed
to ram through the PATRIOT ACT because Senators Daschle and Leahy
were holding it up and once the anthrax occurred it rammed right
through, -
indeed, on the renewal of the USA PATRIOT ACT, Senator
Feingold was holding it up and all of sudden out of nowhere some
white powdered substance appeared at one of the Senate office
buildings, and all of a sudden the renewal of the PATRIOT ACT
went through." -
The evidence becomes more compelling when you take
into consideration the fact that the White House
was on anthrax fighting antibiotics weeks prior to the attacks. -
The professor stressed that a criminal cover up
took place and that it is ongoing: -
"They are still doing it today, if you read
the investigation, the press conference they heard the other day,
it does not add up, if you read the article in today’s New York
Times it does not add up, -
it appears that the FBI set the investigation
up by scientists in such a way that no one knew exactly what they
were doing, they could not communicate with anyone else and only
communicated with and took samples from the FBI." -
"There is today in existence a stock pile of
super weapons grade anthrax that is under the control of the original
perpetrators of the anthrax attacks of October 2001 and that stock
pile can and will be used again when their masters decide it would
be politically convenient to scare and terrorize the American
people." -
"They could launch another attack on us, including
Congress, the Judiciary, the media." The professor warned. -
"I think what we need to do now is insist upon a full scale
Congressional investigation, not some type of presidential commission
cover up along the lines of the 9/11 report." Professor Boyle
concluded. -
Dr Boyle also covered the new evidence suggesting
that Dr Ivins, the man the FBI named as the leading suspect in
their investigation two weeks ago, has been used as a patsy in
the cover up. -
"Ivins is only the latest dead microbiologist."
-
Boyle stated, "You also have to tie into this the large numbers
of dead microbiologists that have appeared since around the summer
before these events, when the New York Times revealed the existence
of the covert anthrax weapons programs run by the CIA, and that
too is in the public record." Boyle stressed. -

Incapable of doing anything and the elite know this already because they act so arrogant and so evil with regard to acting as if no one can touch them. Well, if history has taught us anything is that anyone can be gotten to. Anyone can be eliminated no matter how rich or how connected.

Special to The Narco News BulletinJanuary 29, 2008
-
On a fall evening in a cotton field in Nicaragua, a group of armed men placed a series of torches in a line of planters along a makeshift runway.
-
About half an hour later, around 9 p.m. that evening, Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, a twin-prop Beechcraft King Air 200 touched down on that rural runway and came to a stop. The assembled men began to unload the plane, which was packed with cocaine, while holding the sole witness to the event, a local field hand, captive.
-
Before departing, the men attempted to set fire to the plane, but miraculously it did not burn. They departed the area in trucks with the plane’s valuable payload, leaving behind the lone witness, alive, and more than a half dozen AK-47 automatic rifles.
-
Several days later, Nicaraguan law enforcers apprehended a truck headed for Honduras carrying 1,100 kilos of cocaine.
-
The driver was arrested and the cocaine payload seized. The Nicaraguan law enforcers said the source of the seized dope appeared to be the Beech 200 found abandoned in the cotton field. Police had found traces of cocaine onboard the aircraft as well.
-
-
The Beech 200, undamaged by the attempt to set it ablaze, was eventually turned over to the Nicaraguan military for use in future drug war efforts in that nation.
-
Add Sticky Note
-
Narco News ran the press stories about this Beech 200 by a former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agent, who has experience working in Latin America. The source’s first reaction was to laugh out loud.
-
Add Sticky NoteICE, by the way, is apparently connected to ongoing operation in Latin America called the Mayan Express, which Narco News has previously reported played a role in another cocaine plane shipment — the Gulfstream II jet that crashed in Mexico last September with some 4 tons of coke onboard.
-
The press reports about the Beech 200 incident just didn’t smell right, given that members of a nonprofit Venezuelan search and rescue group also obtained their own own photo of the abandoned aircraft.
-
Add Sticky NoteThat photo (link here) does show the Beech 200’s tail number: N168D, which Federal Aviation Administration records indicate is registered to a North Carolina company called Devon Holding and Leasing Inc.
-
Add Sticky NoteAccording to press reports and an investigation conducted by the European Parliament into the CIA’s terrorist rendition program, Devon Holding is a CIA shell company and N168D is a tail number to a CIA aircraft.
-
He said if the armed men involved in the cocaine shipment were indeed real narco-traffickers, they would not have left a witness alive to talk, nor would they have bungled the attempt to burn the plane — which is not a hard thing to accomplish considering the flammable nature of the fuel that feeds it. Most telling, he says, they would never leave behind their guns.
-
The former ICE agent went on to explain the cause of his humor over the Nicaraguan press reports.
-
“Those guns are their only protection,” the ICE agent says. “And an AK-47 is a prized possession in their world.”
-
The former agent says the press was fed a big fat lie, and they bit on it hook, line and sinker, because it made for good ink.
-
The ICE agent adds that, to him, the Beech 200 incident has all the markings of a government-run operation.
-
He says the reason the plane was not burned up is that the plan all along was to reuse the aircraft for use in a future government operation — and it was, according to the press reports, turned back over to the Nicaraguan government after all.
-
Add Sticky NoteThe CIA-linked tail number on the Beech 200, then, raises some serious questions as to the ultimate destination of the cocaine onboard as well.
-
Similar questions have been raised about the planned destination of the nearly 4 tons of cocaine onboard the Gulfstream II jet that crashed in the Mexican Yucatan last fall.
-
A CIA asset named Baruch Vega claims the Gulfstream II was part of a U.S. government operation (the Mayan Express) that utilized a well-known Colombian narco-trafficker turned informant named Jose Nelson Urrego.
-
Urrego was arrested on money laundering charges by Panamanian police about a week prior to the Gulfstream II’s crash landing. Urrego claims he worked for the CIA, according to Panamanian press reports — a fact Vega also confirms.
-
Add Sticky NoteGreg Smith, one of the owners of the Gulfstream II, according to its bill of sale, also has been linked to past ICE, DEA and CIA operations in Latin America, Narco News reported previously.
-
And the Gulstream II itself has been linked to past use in the CIA’s terrorist rendition program, according to European investigators.
-
Given these realities, attorney Mark Conrad, a former supervisory special agent with U.S. Customs, ICE’s predecessor agency, speculates that the Mayan Express operation is not controlled by ICE at all, but is, in fact, a CIA-run operation using ICE as a cover.
-
He adds that the CIA has agents operating inside many federal law enforcement agencies utilizing what is known as an “official cover.”
-
The former ICE agent who spoke with Narco News about the Beech 200 also suspects CIA is running the show in these drug plane operations. He says ICE is a perfect vehicle for the CIA because it can provide the Agency with a free pass through U.S. ports of entry.
-
“All an ICE agent has to do is make a call and the cargo will be cleared through the checkpoint,” he says.
-
Journalist and author Doug Valentine recently revealed the inner workings of these CIA cover methods within DEA in a story he penned for Counterpunch.
-
Add Sticky Note
From Valentine’s story:
By 1977, some 125 “former” CIA officers had been infiltrated into the DEA at every level of the organization, especially in intelligence units, making everything possible— from black market arms exchanges, to negotiations with terrorists, to political assassination. It also put the CIA in total control of targeting.
-
Add Sticky Note
Leutrell Osborne, a former CIA case officer, told Narco News essentially the same thing when he conveyed his concern about the merging of spook and law enforcement agendas.
“Law enforcement and intelligence operations have become one and the same,” Osborne says. “We as citizens are all affected by this because it has a major impact on civil and human rights.”
-
The Beech 200 and Gulfstream II cocaine planes, both now linked to CIA planes and/or assets, raise the specter of this merged law enforcement/intelligence approach to the war on drugs — an approach that tolerates or even enables drug running for the sake of some perceived higher value in the dirty world of covert action.
-
This curious connection is magnified further by the fact that a third cocaine aircraft also appears to be in the mix: A DC-9 jet apprehended in Mexico in April 2006 with some 5.5 tons of cocaine onboard.
-
Given the evidence bubbling to the surface due to public faces of these cocaine jets, the pattern seems to be self-evident, even if officially our government continues to deny the evidence.
-
Rotating Tail Numbers
-
The European Parliament, which undertook an exhaustive study of the CIA’s terrorist rendition program, provided the following overview of that program in a report it issued in 2006:
-
Ultimately, in this inextricable net, there is also the possibility that single aircrafts change their registration numbers (as for the Gulfstrean V, from Richmor Aviation, registered as N379P, then, N8068V and then N44982).
-
There are indeed 51 airplanes alleged to be used in the extraordinary renditions, but, according the Federal Aviation Administration records, there would be 57 registration numbers. It comes out that some of them are registered more than once.
-
- 26 planes are registered to shell companies and sometimes supported by operating companies.
Among the 51 airplanes alleged to be used by CIA:
-
Add Sticky Note10 are designed as “CIA frequent flyers”, they belong to Blackwater USA, an important CIA and US Army “classified contractor”. It provides staff, training and aviation logistic.
-
In this case there is no intermediation of shell companies.
-
The other 15 planes are from occasional rental from private companies working with CIA as well as with other customers.
-
2. COMPANIES INVOLVED
Shell Companies 6,
• CROWELL AVIATION TECHNOLOGIES, INC
• PATH CORPORATION
• RAPID AIR TRANS, INC.
• STEVENS EXPRESS LEASING, INC
• AVIATION SPECIALTIES, INC
• DEVON HOLDING AND LEASING, INC
• BAYARD FOREIGN MARKETING, LLC.
• KEELER & TATE MANAGEMENT, LLC -
The rotating tail number scenario seems to have played a role in the Beech 200 incident.
-
The number on the plane, N168D, as shown in the photo from the Venezuelan nonprofit group, actually is registered to a different aircraft, according to FAA records.
-
That tail number, N168D, FAA records show, belongs to a large cargo plane known as a CN-235-300, and its registered owner is the same CIA shell company, Devon Holding, referenced in the European Parliament’s report.
-
A photo and further background on this CIA plane can be found at this site.
-
The Beech 200’s real tail number, the Venezuelan search and rescue group reports, is N391SA — which is registered to a company in St. Petersburg, Fla., called Skyway Aircraft Inc., FAA records show.
-
Coincidentally, the DC-9 jetliner apprehended in Mexico in April 2006 also is linked to a Skyway Aircraft Inc. in the Tampa/St. Pete metro area. That Skyway Aircraft, based in Clearwater, is an affiliate of Skyway Communications Holding Corp., which has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings since June 2005. (Journalist Daniel Hopsicker has reported extensively on Skyway Communications’ role in the mystery of the cocaine jets.)
-
Skyway Communications, the parent company of Skyway Aircraft in Clearwater, arranged to purchase the DC-9 (tail number N900SA) via a stock swap with a Costa Rica-based firm called Dupont Investment Fund #57289, in November 2004, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
-
However, the jet was ultimately registered with the FAA in August 2005 by a company called Royal Sons Inc. prior to being sold to an unknown Venezuelan buyer only days before it was apprehended in Mexico on April 10, 2006, with 5.5 tons of cocaine onboard.
-
Royal Sons President Frederick J. Geffon is a shareholder in Skyway Communications and his company is a major creditor in the Skyway Communications bankruptcy (links here and here). In addition, Royal Sons and Skyway Communications previously teamed up to purchase a separate DC-9 via a joint loan agreement, a January 2004 SEC filings shows.
-
That DC-9, tail number N120NE, is now registered to a company in Houston called AIRCRAFT GUARANTY TRUST LLC TRUSTEE, FAA records show.
-
The paper trail is complex, but it all boils down to several individuals who conducted business with each other via several South Florida companies that all intersect with Skyway Communications, the parent company of Skyway Aircraft in Clearwater, Fla.
-
- Brent Kovar, president of Skyway Communications;
- Joy Kovar, (Brent’s mother) also an officer of Skyway Communications;
- James Kent, CEO of Skyway Communications;
- Glenn Kovar, (Joy’s husband and Brent’s father) listed as the original sole board member of Skyway Aircraft in its Nevada articles of incorporation, SEC records show. Skyway Aircraft in Clearwater, Florida, is set up as a foreign corporation (based in Nevada) that does business in the Sunshine State.
Those individuals are the following:
-
The Kovars all intersect through a company called Skyway Global LLC, which licensed the wireless technology to Skyway Aircraft that was the basis of a proprietary air-to-ground communications system that Skyway Communications marketed as its exclusive product. The Kovars, according to a 2002 SEC filing, are all officers of Skyway Global.
-
Skyway Communications CEO Kent also has an interesting background, SEC records show:
Mr. Kent served in various government contract management positions providing financial and program management services supporting national communications and intelligence projects for the Department of Defense, National Security Agency, and Department of the Navy.
-
Add Sticky Note
And Skyway Communications itself is linked to the nation’s national security apparatus, according to a press release the company issued through Business Wire in May 2004:
As previously announced, SkyWay Communications Holding Corp. (OTCBB:SWYC), and its wholly owned subsidiary, Sky Way Aircraft Inc., have entered into a sales and marketing partnership agreement with The Titan Corporation, a multi-billion dollar US defense industries contractor who presently manages more than 2,500 contracts with a backlog of more than $4 billion dollars in the areas of Homeland Security and Anti-Terrorism, Command, Control and Communications Systems, Aircraft Defense Systems, Network Communications, as well as other information and communications systems and solutions associated with national defense.
-
Add Sticky Note
Finally, Brent Kovar appears to have a special relationship with the movers and shakers of the U.S. political system, according to this August 2003 press release:
Congressman Tom Delay, Majority Leader, has appointed Brent C, Kovar, to serve as the Honorary Chairman, Business Advisory Council. Officials from the National Republican Congressional Committee announced that Mr. Brent C. Kovar has been appointed to service on the Business Advisory Council in recognition of his valuable contributions and dedication to the Republican Party.
-
Skyway Communications lost some $40 million between 2002 and its eventual bankruptcy filing in 2005. But it did manage to directly or indirectly acquire two DC-9 aircraft, one of which eventually found its way to Mexico, via Royal Sons and then an unknown Venezuelan owner, with 5.5 tons of cocaine onboard.
-
Royal Sons’ Geffon claims he is a victim of Skyway Communications debacle and stresses that he knows very little about the DC-9 coke jet and has no responsibility for the cocaine found onboard since his company did not own the jet when it was apprehended in Mexico.
-
“I just chalked it all up to a bad experience,” he says.
-
Add Sticky NoteAnd Glenn Kovar has another interesting business associate, according to a check of Florida’s corporation records. Glenn Kovar is listed as an officer in an inactive Florida company called Homeland Security Tracking Enforcement Inc., along with his wife Joy and another businessman named Donald A. Mitchell.
-
It turns out that Mitchell in 1996 served as the president of a Panamanian investment company called The Firm of Marc Harris, according to SEC filings. Mitchell left Harris’ firm about a year later due to a business dispute, court records show.
-
That was probably a stroke of luck for him given the eventual fate of the founder of The Firm of Marc Harris. Marc Harris, was arrested in Nicaragua in June 2003 on money laundering charges and is currently serving a 17-year stint in U.S. federal prison.
-

Brent Kovar, in a promotional video for Skyway Aircraft.
Photo: St. Petersburg Times -
The Kovars could not be reached for comment. The phone number for Skyway Communications is now disconnected. Geffon says he knows only that Brent Kovar resides in the tiny St. Petersburg community of Tierra Verde.
-
Skyway St. Pete
-
Brent Kovar’s address in Tierra Verde is 121 6th St., according to corporation records filed with the state of Florida.
Brent Kovar, who served as president of Skyway Aircraft in Clearwater, lives a short distance away from the home of Larry Peters, who owns a company with an identical name (Skyway Aircraft Inc.) in St. Petersburg.
Peters’ address in Tierra Verde is 615 Monte Cristo Blvd., Florida, corporation records show.
-
Like the DC-9 linked to Skyway Communications that was eventually sold to a buyer in Venezuela, Peters’ company sold the Beech 200 to a Venezuelan purchaser as well, in October 2004, about a month before it was apprehended in a Nicaraguan cotton field linked to a payload of some 1,100 kilos of cocaine.
-
In addition, since 2004, Peters’ Skyway Aircraft has sold four additional planes to Latin American buyers, according to FAA records — the most recent a Gulfstream jet exported to Panama in June 2007.
-
(However, this is not the same Gulfstream II that crashed in Mexico last September.)
-
Like Geffon, Peters says he has no control over what happens to an aircraft his company sells after it leaves the country.
-

DC-9 with tail number N900SA, shown here two years before its aprehension in Mexico with 5.5 tones of cocaine. Note the Skyway logo toward the front door.
Photo: D.R. 2004 Michael Cater, Airliners.net -
“When we sell a plane, it is deregistered and it leaves my place,” Peters told Narco News. “I sell about five planes a month all over. I also have a business in Brazil that does refurbishing work on planes.”
-
Interestingly, the Gulfstream II jet that was ditched in Mexico’s Yucatan last September was sold to a company controlled by two Brazilian businessmen prior to being flipped to Greg Smith (a U.S. government-connected pilot) and his partner, Clyde O’Connor.
-
However, that is likely just another coincidence in a series of coincidences involving the three cocaine aircraft.
-
Peters adds that he has no personal relationship with Brent Kovar, though he does know they are neighbors in the waterfront neighborhood of Tierra Verde. In fact, Peters claims he was troubled by the fact that Kovar operated a company with the same name as his company, which is something Peters says the state of Florida should not have allowed.
“I followed him [Brent Kovar] home one day,” Peters says. “He drives a Hummer with the Skyway name on it, and I followed him home, and then contacted my lawyer.”
-
Peters adds, however, that he chose not to take the matter to court because he could not afford an extended, costly litigation battle.
He also declined to disclose any information about the Venezuelan buyer of the Beech 200.
“I have no idea who we exported that plane to in Venezuela and I wouldn’t release that information anyway,” he says. “…There’s nothing I can do to control what happens after I sell an airplane to someone.”
-
Following the Vanishing Guns
-
So, it seems, this entire paper trail of coincidence leads back to some half dozen supposedly abandoned AK-47s in a cotton field in Nicaragua. And the odds are, if a former ICE agent is to be believed, those weapons, if they existed at all, were likely a red herring used to bait a gullible media.
-
Add Sticky Note
Journalist Valentine, in his recent Counterpunch story, offers some insight into the possible nature of this complex trail of coincidence:
With Bush’s war on terror, the situation has only gotten worse. In Afghanistan and South West Asia, the DEA is entirely infiltrated and controlled by the CIA and military. DEA headquarters is basically an adjunct of the Oval Office. And the Establishment continues to keep the lid on the story. After sending my manuscript to two reviewers—one with CIA connections, the other with DEA connections—my publisher has stopped communicating with me. I think my editor just wants me to go away.
One can only wonder how deeply America will descend into this vortex of fear and subservience to state security before it vanishes altogether.
-
So, what does this intersection of government agencies and assets, money launderers, narco-traffickers, cocaine jets, and public and private companies really reveal, and how does it relate to Valentine’s own revelations? What was the CIA’s true interest in these drug flights, and how many drug shipments has the agency protected toward that end?
-
For now, we will have to keep digging, since nobody in our government, including the Congress, seems inclined to investigate the matter. As a result, the drug war will continue as one immense cover story that makes for good ink — and fiction.
Stay tuned…

The Central Intelligence Agency was formed at the end of >World
War IIin order to fight the new covert Cold War. It found its roots
in the already formed OSS (Office of Strategic Services), the military
intelligence organization that had reached a high profile with its control
over the top-secret Manhattan Project
which developed the first nuclear bomb. -
Add Sticky NoteThe founding fathers of the CIA William "Wild Bill" Donovan
and Allen Dulles, were both prominent Roman
Catholics, and members of the secret society the "Knights
of Malta". -
Recently declassified documents show that following the war the Knights
of Malta were responsible for aiding the escape of many prominent
Nazis, including Death Camp scientists and many from the inner circles
of occultist Heinreich Himmler's Gestapo - the Nazi intelligence service. -
Add Sticky NoteMany of these, including Knight of Malta General
Reinhard Gehlen, went directly to work for the newly formed CIA, which
at Donovan's insistence, was now a civilian organization. -
This kept the
fervently anti-Nazi General Dwight Eisenhower and the US military out
of the initial equation, which allowed the CIA to represent the interests
of American industrialists and transnational Corporations, above and beyond
the interests of the American people. -
Add Sticky NoteThe Knights of Malta's intimate links with the Nazi
movement found its ideological base in their common Rosicrucian belief
system. This states that Man's evolution is held back by certain lower
sub-races who must be removed for the process to continue. -
Through the
CIA this feudal belief system had infiltrated the heart of democratic
America. Under the cover of the cold war apparatus, the CIA became a global
leader in biological and chemical warfare
mind control techniques, psychological operations,
propaganda and covert warfare. -
Add Sticky NoteAccording to previous MI6 officer, Dr. John Coleman, in his precisely
detailed and documented book, "Conspirators' Hierarchy:
The Story of the Committee of 300," the CIA is largely subordinate
to British intelligence agencies, multi-national corporations, and even
the Royal family. -
Add Sticky NoteThrough the MI6 and numerous oligarchy-controlled "think tanks,"
Coleman explains, America's propaganda mills--major news networks and
agencies--churn out foul fabrications that few recognize as propaganda.

Ted Nugent -
The recently
concluded Republican National Convention in St. Paul served as the
grand coming-out party for the Homeland Security State. -
Its enforcers,
fully panoplied in the military regalia that is rapidly becoming
standard police attire, could be seen either strutting through the
streets hungry to conduct a beat-down or marching to military cadences. -
Armored vehicles prowled the streets, while military helicopters
rattled overhead. -
Several journalists, including Amy
Goodman and two associates from the independent Democracy Now!
media enterprise, were arrested and assaulted by police while
covering protest marches. -
As in Baghdad,
homes in the Twin Cities were subjected to "pre-emptive" military
raids on the eve of the Republican Convention. -
Large sections
of Minneapolis/St. Paul, a placid Midwestern American community,
were made to resemble Baghdad under military occupation. -
Beginning the night
of Friday, August 29, multi-jurisdictional paramilitary police units
armed with automatic weapons stormed residences where left-wing
activists were billeted in anticipation of protest demonstrations. -
More
than one hundred people were handcuffed and questioned during
those raids, many of them forced to lie face-down on the ground
while officers searched for evidence of various purported plots
to disrupt and "terrorize" the convention. -
Add Sticky NoteAccording to Glenn
Greenwald, a civil libertarian commentator who was on-site immediately
after the raids, at least some of the police who conducted the raids
couldn't resist tormenting helpless detainees with jocular talk
about summary executions. -
In total more
than 800 people were arrested during convention-related demonstrations.
The most significant of those arrests involved eight people detained
during the pre-convention raids who were eventually
charged with "conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism"
under Minnesota's version of the PATRIOT (sic) Act. -
Where mere "conspiracy
to riot" is a misdemeanor, re-classifying it as an act of terrorism
leaves
the defendants facing the prospect of seven years in prison. -
Add Sticky NoteThis is the
first time American citizens have been accused, in a civilian court,
of committing a crime "in furtherance" of terrorism. It will not
be the last. -
Some elements
of the protest "community" that materialized in St. Paul were incontestably
seeking a confrontation with the police as a form of ideological
street theater.
While some
consider this approach to be useless at best, it's not that different
in principle from tactics perfected by Samuel Adams and like-minded
patriots of our founding period. -
Add Sticky NoteOther street
activists in the Twin Cities expressed their contempt for the criminal
violence of the State by deliberately impeding peaceful commerce
and destroying private property, which is neither useful nor justified. -
But it is the
prosecution of the eight "terrorist" suspects, and the
long-term surveillance project involving the RNC Welcoming Committee
(RNCWC), that will have the most important tangible consequences.
The methods of infiltration, surveillance, and apprehension used
against those activists will provide a model for future crackdowns
against any organized dissent. -
Accounts of
the arrests in the corporatist press retailed prosecution claims
that the activists planned a campaign of mayhem and violence that
would have included attacks on public transportation and attempts
to kidnap Republican delegates. -
The "evidence"
seized during the raids consists of unremarkable construction materials
– cans of paint, rope, roofing nails – that could be used
in various disruptive ways. The search
warrant application also permitted police to confiscate "computer
systems" and "media in whatever form," in order to obtain detailed
information about the activities of the RNCWC, which is described
as an "organized criminal enterprise." -
Thus someone who owned a computer or a single can of paint
could be arrested, indicted, and perhaps convicted of terrorism
charges in absence of a single documented criminal act if
the prosecution can supply a convincing narrative. -
That document
also claims that "possession of the property above described constitutes
a crime." -
And in this
case, as with so many others, the job of supply the appropriate
narrative has been given to "confidential
informants," two of whom (along with an "undercover investigator")
are cited copiously in the warrant application and the criminal
complaint. -
The "corroboration" offered for the most lurid and disturbing
charges – those dealing with actual violence and property destruction
– consists entirely of the accounts provided by paid informants. -
"Of the stuff
that was seized by the police, about ninety percent is just common
household items that we're told were going to be used for criminal
acts," commented Bruce Nestor, a defense attorney for the detainees,
in a telephone interview with Pro
Libertate -
Add Sticky Note"In fact, there is nothing here that in itself
constitutes evidence of a crime or a plot to commit a crime. [The
prosecution] wants us to view these items in light of the story
being told by the paid informants, and the presumed political beliefs
of the detainees." -
Police who
conducted the pre-convention raids claim to have found 37 "caltrops"
– spikes that are scattered on a motorway to disable cars during
a police pursuit. What was actually found was not a supply of standard-issue
caltrops, but roofing nails that had supposedly been "weaponized." -
"To be fair,
roofing nails could be used as caltrops, but they could also
be used as roofing nails," Nestor pointed out when I asked him about
that reported discovery. "Some police experts insist that these
particular roofing nails had been
modified or bundled together in some way that suggests the intention
to use them to disrupt traffic. -
But this is suggestive, once again,
largely because of the stories told by the informants. Otherwise
you've got common roofing nails" – possession of which is evidence
only of a plot to repair one's roof. -
Add Sticky NoteSimilar considerations
apply in evaluating the claim that police discovered "weaponized
urine" (no, I'm not kidding) during the pre-convention
raids. -
What the police, citing breathless reports from their confidential
informants, triumphantly described as an attempt to create a very
crude bio-chem anti-personnel weapon was described by activists
as a rudimentary chamber pot. -
Given the frequency
with which well-publicized "international terrorist plots" prove
to be media spectacles choreographed by the FBI through paid informant/provocateurs,
it's reasonable to suspect that the case against RNCWC activists
may involve a domestic application of the same approach. -
Former
CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who was present in St. Paul to speak
to peace activists at a St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, believes
that "what violence there was [during protests] bore the earmarks
of provocation by the likes of Sheriff Fletcher and his Homeland
Security, FBI, and – according to one well-sourced report – Blackwater
buddies." -
Add Sticky NoteMcGovern describes
one instance in which "a man who looked like a protester – dark
clothes, backpack, a bit disheveled" – was identified as one of
the police officers who had carried out the Friday night raid against
the RNCWC. -
"The young protesters asked the man, and two associates,
to leave [the protest], at which point the three hustled into a
nearby unmarked sedan," writes McGovern. "The license plate, observed
by a Pioneer Press reporter, traced back to the detective
unit of the Hennepin County Sheriff's office...." -
It's worth
remembering that the same time-honored tactic was on display during
the August 2007 Security and Prosperity Partnership summit in Montebello,
Quebec almost exactly a year earlier. -
In an incident captured on
video, a group of ineptly disguised police infiltrators, armed with
rocks and reeking of foul intentions, were caught
trying to infiltrate and radicalize a peaceful protest march. -
While McGovern
may be right about the involvement of agents provocateurs, there's
reason to believe at least some of those caught up in the pre-convention
sweep harbored criminal designs. -
One of the
seven activists arrested during a "pre-emptive" sweep, a young man
burdened with the theatrically villainous name Max Jackob Specktor,
was found to possess several sets of black clothing, goggles, helmets,
several implements that a vandal would find very useful (a bolt
cutter, a pry bar, spring loaded "punches," and metal pipe of various
sizes), and documents suggestive of something other than innocent
intentions. -
Obviously,
if the prosecution can prove that Specktor was planning to participate
in a riot, he should be convicted of that charge and be given the
appropriate penalty. If he has proven co-conspirators, they should
likewise receive a suitable punishment. -
The ominous novelty of this
case resides in the effort to punish the familiar misdemeanor offense
of "conspiracy to riot" as a form of domestic terrorism, and to
incriminate others who appear to have committed no offense at all
as part of a widespread terrorist plot. -
The prosecution
depicts Specktor as part of the "black bloc," a radical element
within the larger anarchist community that carries out "direct action"
in the form of assaults on property confrontations with the police. -
It's likely
that a trial would place Specktor at the center of a series of concentric
circles intended to implicate others – beginning with his immediate
co-defendants, and working out to those identified as belonging
to "affinity groups" – as part of a large domestic terrorist conspiracy. -
If that approach
is followed, this one case could metastasize into a public works
project for prosecutors across the country. -
Add Sticky NoteIt will certainly provide
a template to be used whenever any appendage of the Homeland Security
Leviathan wants to suppress organized dissent and prosecute it as
a criminal act "in furtherance of terrorism." -
In March 2007,
the RNC in St. Paul was designated a National Security Special Event
(NSSE). Shortly thereafter, the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department
began hiring and deploying infiltrators. According to Sheriff Bob
Fletcher, his department, working through the local Joint Terrorism
Task Force, was involved in a nation-wide effort to track down and
keep suspected protesters under surveillance. -
The lead agency
for Ramsey County in this undertaking was Fletcher's Special Investigations
Unit, under the direction of former US Secret Service Special Agent
Tony Samec (who is one of four affiants listed in the warrant application). -
Add Sticky NoteThe application observes that Samec, who most likely was temporarily
seconded to the Sheriff's department, "has been involved in numerous
NSSEs throughout the United States." -
It was the chief local federal subcontractor
for the crack-down on dissent during the RNC. But it was also being
investigated by the FBI for corruption. -
Ramsey County's
Special Investigations Unit has an interesting relationship with
the federal government. -
And in one of those bits
of historical symmetry one would find implausible in a novel, those
two developments intersected in the days immediately prior to the
RNC. -
On August 27,
just two days before the pre-emptive raids on RNC protesters,
two close associates of Sheriff Fletcher on the SIU were found guilty
of theft and civil rights violations. Officer Timothy Rehak
and Mark Naylon were convicted of stealing $6,000 during an FBI
"integrity check," a sting operation intended to ferret out corrupt
police officers. -
Rehak is a
former St. Paul police officer who had a troubled history before
Fletcher asked him to join the SIU. -
Add Sticky Note
-
He was Fletcher's
chief PR spokesman. Before that he was the best man at Fletcher's
second wedding. He operated a private security firm that employed
off-duty deputies to serve as bouncers at a nightclub owned by a
man named Mike Ogren, who was convicted of an illegal gambling operation
in 2003. -
Despite the
fact that he had no training or authority, Naylon was permitted
to carry a sidearm, make arrests, and otherwise behave as if he
were a duly deputized member of Fletcher's department. -
On occasion,
when a member of Fletcher's department needed to cite a "confidential
informant" to obtain a warrant, Naylon would play that role as well
– perjuring himself by providing the exact "testimony" an officer
needed to secure permission for a search or an arrest. -
The SIU first
came under FBI scrutiny more
than five years ago. A July 2003 raid on a bar discovered an
unlicensed gambling operation. The bar's owner claimed that the
proceeds were helping to underwrite Fletcher's re-election effort.
That charge was recanted, but it stirred up an FBI inquiry that
prompted the sting operation against Rehak and Naylon and led to
their eventual conviction. -
During his
four terms as Sheriff, Fletcher has radically expanded the size
and budget of his force, and strong-armed the county commission
(by way of litigation and a cynical PR campaign) to build a new
$61 million jail. He also developed a reputation for cronyism (demonstrated
by his treatment of Naylor), empire-building, and what former St.
Paul Mayor George Latimer calls "conspiratorial" thinking. Most
importantly, he eagerly queued up for every dime of federal largesse
he could find. -
Add Sticky NoteTo put the
matter tidily, Robert Fletcher – ambitious, power-fixated, and compromised
– was an ideal local subcontractor for the Homeland Security State. -
Former FBI
Special Agent Coleen Rowley, who exposed
the Bureau's ineptitude in investigating the 9-11 plot (or,
perhaps, its passive complicity in abetting it), resides near St.
Paul. -
In a letter
written to FBI Director Robert Mueller three weeks before the attack
on Iraq, Rowley warned that the "`pre-emptive strike' rationale
being applied to situations abroad could migrate back home, fostering
a more permissive attitude on the part of law enforcement officers
in this country." -
During
his visit to the Twin Cities, Ray
McGovern asked Rowley if the spectacle unfolding in St. Paul
offered an awful vindication of her concerns. Referring to the pre-emptive
raids and the military occupation of the streets illustrate how
once the Feds take control of matters, "all the rules go up in smoke"
and "otherwise wonderful community police officers [will] turn on
their own peaceful citizens...." -
To employ
the argot of Star Wars fans, Rowley believes that St. Paul demonstrated
how quickly "local" police personnel are transformed into stormtroopers
when the Feds activate Order
66. -
Add Sticky NoteIn fact, as
Glenn
Greenwald pointed out, the apparatus on display in St. Paul
was a federally controlled local militia, rather than a local police
agency in any sense of the expression. -
However one
addresses the nuance of the proposition, this much seems clear:
The Homeland Security Death Star is now fully
operational. -

A woman is facing federal charges after she spilled her Diet Coke on the counter of a Veterans Affairs Medical Center cafeteria.
-
The U.S. Attorney's office is pursuing a case against Natalie Walters for refusing to pay for an over-priced soda and pouring it out at the checkout counter of a hospital cafeteria in Boise, Idaho.
-
Walters is facing two counts, each carrying maximum sentences of six months in federal prison, the Idaho Statesman reported.
-
She told the newspaper the case is a waste of taxpayer money and that she will fight it. Her arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 8.
-
The 39-year-old woman said she often brings her father, who is a disabled Vietnam veteran, to doctor appointments at the hospital. Walters said she carries a cup and fills it with Diet Coke, and the cafeteria regularly charges her $1 or $1.50.
However, trouble began when a cashier made her pay $3.80.
-
"I told her that cannot be right and asked to talk to the manager," Walters told the Statesman.
The manager would not back down from his price.
-
Walters offered to give the soda back, but the manager refused to accept it. She became angry and dumped the beverage onto the counter.
-
The manager reacted by banning her from the hospital cafeteria. Walters left the dining facility but stayed with her father at the hospital for a couple of hours.
-
She said no one approached her after the incident, but the situation had been recorded.
-
"They did not know who I was. But they had the whole thing on videotape," she said.
-
Walters was recorded with her father in several areas of the hospital.
-
The following day, her father went to a VA dentist appointment. Authorities notified him about the event and asked him to tell Walters to contact them, the Statesmen reported.
-
"They accessed my father's medical records to find out his next appointment to try and find me," she said. "I think that is a (federal health privacy law) violation.
-
"Medical records are private," she continued. "They should not have used a veteran's medical records to find me. ... My dad was upset. He could not believe it."
-
Walters ignored the request and expected it would go away – until a Statesman reporter notified her of federal charges and her upcoming arraignment.
-
"My father is a veteran," she said. "It is a federal facility for veterans. This should have been handled differently. This is extreme. This is totally extreme. Well, if they have that much time on their hands … go for it."

FBI - Rising Hate
Law Gestapo? -

A federal hate bill would give complete "police
state" powers to big government to swoop down to investigate and prosecute
"hate-motivated" crime. -
But liberal activists hardly need to
wait for such legislation. Increasingly, the government uses the vagaries
of civil rights laws and the FBI to leap over established barriers to federal
intervention in state law enforcement. -
Founding father James Madison warned that, if the federal
government can spend money indefinitely for "the general welfare,"
then its powers will "subvert the very foundation, the very nature
of the limited government established by the people of America." -
The
Constitution and legal precedent have limited the federal government from
meddling in states' law enforcement, except in small numbers of instances. -
Today, all it seems to take is a request from a local
police or government agency or an offended homosexual screaming, "Hate
crime!" to bring the feds running. -
Add Sticky NoteAnd since September 11, domestic
hate crimes are often linked with that inflammatory one-word excuse for
abuse of government power-"terrorism." -
The FBI's website proclaims,
"Investigating hate crime is the number one priority of our Civil
Rights Program. Why? -
Not only because hate crime has a devastating impact
on families and communities, but also because groups that preach hatred
and intolerance plant the seeds of terrorism here in our country." -
Wow, the seeds of terrorism.
-
This fire-breathing rhetoric is used to justify
federal involvement in crimes that should be dealt with by local authorities. -
The FBI instead sweeps in to investigate minor vandalism crimes, proclaiming
that America's epidemic of hate must be stopped before it rips our nation
apart. -
Here are some examples.
-
The FBI is investigating an Idaho
incident where a couple of thugs allegedly punched a young black girl after
egging her parents' car and shouting harassment outside her home. -
The feds
got involved when a swastika was scribbled on the van of a predominantly
black church in Indiana. Local news described the incident with these throat-grabbing
words, "Hate has the potential to destroy a community." -
(The
story admits the vandalism might have been the work of a bored teen. The
church's pastor said he lived in that town for 23 years and never saw this
kind of activity. But federal agents got involved and it's being investigated
as a hate crime.) -
FBI might also join prosecution of a Texas "hate
crime" where hate graffiti was scribbled on a car with a Sharpie marker.
(Its black owner said, "I have actually been in Nashville for 16 yearsI
have never seen anything like this." Despite this, he says, "It
takes you to the core. It just hits you right in the core.") -
A California
man was recently sentenced to six and a half years in prison for "a
series of race-motivated threats" against a black man and his family.
Again, this brought in the FBI. -
Acting Assistant Attorney General for the
Civil Rights Division Grace Chung Becker said, "Hate and intolerance
tear at the very fabric of our great nation --- a fabric that is strengthened
by its diversity of races, religions and national origins." -
Last year, House majority leader Steny Hoyerrepeated
the tear-the-fabric metaphor during debate of the expanded federal "anti-hate"
bill. He said "brutal hate crimes motivated by race, religion, national
origin, gender, sexual orientation and identity or disability not only
injure individual victims, but also terrorize entire segments of our population
and tear at our nation's social fabric." -
Hate crime laws say bias
against certain groups is so bad-and those groups need such special protection-that
we need extra laws and penalties against those beliefs; fragile minority
communities are at risk from the statement made by bias-motivated crimes. -
Of course, any crime, regardless of motive, hurts communities.
But, while the expression of hate can devastate individuals, the danger
to society from "anti-hate" laws is far, far greater. -
Freedom of speech and ideas provide access to the very
truths and free protest that combat hatred. -
Also, the expansion of federal
power in law enforcement poses a far greater threat than even the most
unpleasant rash of hateful graffiti. -
The real threat of hate crime laws is that they are actually
thought crime laws-a terrifying prelude to an Orwellian society that cracks
down on unapproved beliefs. -
"Hate" and "intolerance"
are feelings that rise from convictions. -
The next obvious step is to criminalize
those convictions, and statements about them, even when they aren't connected
to an act of violence or a crime. -
Since the federal government has already
assumed tremendous power to act against hate crimes, it won't just be one
or two states prosecuting free expression of bias. Federal prosecution
of public "hate" will shatter America's remaining freedoms. -
Once that happens, America is dead. Freedom made our
nation great and unique. When we lose freedom, we lose America.

It appears the Government has new Lego building blocks to play with. Prison cells that are designed to snap together to build a prison anywhere at any time to meet the demand.

I received the following communication today.
-
The new Lego style can be snapped together to make a hundred, a thousand, or hundred thousand cell prisons, two, three, or ten blocks high.
-
Rather expensive to make these mobile type units don't you think?
-
Our government must see a need for them somewhere. Your home town when needed maybe?
-
Move em in, move em out when and where needed!
-
Add Sticky NoteThe people need to confiscate a few of these units and stack them in DC and Wall Street. They are truly needed there and could be put to good use.

Truthout, February 2008
Title: “Predatory Lenders’ Partner in Crime” -

Title: “Why the Bush Administration ‘Watergated’ Eliot Spitzer”
Author: F. William Engdahl -
Student Researchers: Rob Hunter, Elizabeth Rathbun, and Rebecca Newsome
-
Faculty Evaluator: Mickey S. Huff, MA
-
The exposure of New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer’s tryst with a luxury call girl had little to do with the Bush administration’s high moral standards for public servants.
-
Author F. William Engdahl advises that, “in evaluating spectacular scandals around prominent public figures, it is important to ask what and who might want to eliminate that person.”
-
Timing suggests that Spitzer was likely a target of a White House and Wall Street operation to silence one of its most dangerous and vocal critics of their handling of the current financial market crisis.
-
Spitzer had become increasingly public in blaming the Bush administration for the subprime crisis. He testified in mid-February before the US House of Representatives Financial Services subcommittee and later that day, in a national CNBC interview, laid blame squarely on the administration for creating an environment ripe for predatory lenders.
-
On February 14, the Washington Post published an editorial by Spitzer titled, “Predatory Lenders’ Partner in Crime: How the Bush Administration Stopped the States From Stepping In to Help Consumers,” which charged, “Not only did the Bush administration do nothing to protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to which the federal government was turning a blind eye.”
-
In this editorial, Spitzer explained:
-
The administration accomplished this feat through an obscure federal agency called the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).
-
The OCC has been in existence since the Civil War. Its mission is to ensure the fiscal soundness of national banks.
-
For 140 years, the OCC examined the books of national banks to make sure they were balanced, an important but uncontroversial function.
-
But a few years ago, for the first time in its history, the OCC was used as a tool against consumers.
-
Add Sticky NoteIn 2003, during the height of the predatory lending crisis, the OCC invoked a clause from the 1863 National Bank Act to issue formal opinions preempting all state predatory lending laws, thereby rendering them inoperative. The OCC also promulgated new rules that prevented states from enforcing any of their own consumer protection laws against national banks.
-
The federal government’s actions were so egregious and so unprecedented that all 50 state attorneys general, and all 50 state banking superintendents, actively fought the new rules.
-
But the unanimous opposition of the 50 states did not deter, or even slow, the Bush administration in its goal of protecting the banks. In fact, when my office opened an investigation of possible discrimination in mortgage lending by a number of banks, the OCC filed a federal lawsuit to stop the investigation.”
-
The editorial appeared the day after Spitzer’s ill-fated rendezvous with the prostitute at the Mayflower Hotel. With that article, some Washington insiders believe, Spitzer signed his own political death warrant.
-
On March 4, 2008, Spitzer furthermore proposed legislation that would have imposed penalties for mortgage fraud and predatory lending.1
-
Curiously, Spitzer, who had been elected governor in 2006, defeating a Republican by winning nearly 70 percent of the vote, has been not charged with any crime.
-
Add Sticky NoteHis case went into the hands of Washington and not those of New York State authorities, underscoring the clear political nature of Spitzer’s “offense.”
-
New York Assembly Republicans immediately announced plans to impeach Spitzer or put him on public trial if he were to refuse resignation.
-
Although prostitution is illegal in most US states, clients of prostitutes are almost never charged, nor are their names typically released while a case is in process.
-
Spitzer’s editorial concluded, “When history tells the story of the sub-prime lending crisis and recounts its devastating effects on the lives of so many innocent homeowners, the Bush administration will not be judged favorably . . . it will be judged as a willing accomplice to the lenders who went to any lengths in their quest for profits.
-
The administration was so willing, in fact, that it used the power of the federal government in an unprecedented assault on state legislatures, as well as on state attorneys general and anyone else on the side of consumers.”

No, You're Not Crazy
- 24 more annotations...
-
-
You're not crazy, that is, if you've begun to have waking nightmares about what might be coming as the economy worsens and signs of "normalcy" (of what?) begin to vanish from our lives.
-
Many more people without jobs and homeless, tent cities springing up here and there, perhaps regular power outages and growing shortages of goods that had once been plentiful...the list goes on and on.
-
And what, you might wonder, is our beneficent, all-caring government doing to prepare for this multitude of possibilities?
-
Add Sticky NoteAfter all, some of those poor, jobless, homeless, starving people might get unruly.
-
The government of the United States is a wondrous creation and, naturally, it only wants to "help" you:
-
The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.
Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home. -
Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.
It is not the first time an active-duty unit has been tapped to help at home. In August 2005, for example, when Hurricane Katrina unleashed hell in Mississippi and Louisiana, several active-duty units were pulled from various posts and mobilized to those areas. -
But this new mission marks the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities.
After 1st BCT finishes its dwell-time mission, expectations are that another, as yet unnamed, active-duty brigade will take over and that the mission will be a permanent one. -
“Right now, the response force requirement will be an enduring mission. How the [Defense Department] chooses to source that and whether or not they continue to assign them to NorthCom, that could change in the future,” said Army Col. Louis Vogler, chief of NorthCom future operations. “Now, the plan is to assign a force every year.”
...
They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack. -
The 1st BCT’s soldiers also will learn how to use “the first ever nonlethal package that the Army has fielded,” 1st BCT commander Col. Roger Cloutier said, referring to crowd and traffic control equipment and nonlethal weapons designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals without killing them.
“It’s a new modular package of nonlethal capabilities that they’re fielding. They’ve been using pieces of it in Iraq, but this is the first time that these modules were consolidated and this package fielded, and because of this mission we’re undertaking we were the first to get it.” -
The package includes equipment to stand up a hasty road block; spike strips for slowing, stopping or controlling traffic; shields and batons; and, beanbag bullets.
“I was the first guy in the brigade to get Tasered,” said Cloutier, describing the experience as “your worst muscle cramp ever — times 10 throughout your whole body.
“I’m not a small guy, I weigh 230 pounds ... it put me on my knees in seconds.” -
"Nonlethal weapons designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals without killing them..." Frequently, it doesn't work out that way: "Obey or Die."
-
But you were being unruly. You might be dangerous, at least dangerous to those who rule us.
-
Add Sticky NoteAnd honestly, the fact that you may be homeless, starving and desperate is no reason to be rude or uncooperative.
-
This comes at the very end of the story, offered by the division operations officer:
“I don’t know what America’s overall plan is — I just know that 24 hours a day, seven days a week, there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines that are standing by to come and help if they’re called,” Cloutier said. “It makes me feel good as an American to know that my country has dedicated a force to come in and help the people at home.”
-
I'm sure there are people in the military who believe this, or at least think they believe it.
-
But if and when the order comes to fire on American citizens, what happens then? I don't think we want to find out.
-
Many of these individuals are overly familiar with killing innocent people -- as indeed, our criminal war in Iraq is nothing but an operation dedicated to killing innocent people in ungraspably huge numbers --
-
so a new kind of target probably won't deter them for long, if at all.
-
Add in all the private mercenary forces now available to the government, and, well...
-
No, you're not crazy. The reasons for my argument will become clearer in the second and concluding part of this new essay of mine, "The State and Full Spectrum Dominance, Abroad and At Home" --
-
but this gives you an idea of why I chose the phrase "Full Spectrum Dominance," a phrase that usually refers to U.S. military capabilities in particular, and why I included "At Home."
-
But I am concerned with "Full Spectrum Dominance" in a still broader sense, as I will soon explain.
Pleasant dreams, dear reader. -

Rubicon in the Rear-View, Part I: Militarizing the Police
- 48 more annotations...
-
-
The future of law enforcement: The 193rd Military Police Battalion, Colorado National Guard, trains at Ft. Carson last July 12 in preparation for deployment as part of JTF-DNC -- the military component of security arrangements for the Democratic Convention in Denver.
-
There are those who still think they are holding the pass against a revolution that may be coming up the road. But they are gazing in the wrong direction. The revolution is behind them.
Garet Garrett, The Revolution Was (1938) -
The seamless integration of the military and law enforcement into a single "Internal Security Force" is the defining characteristic of a fully realized police state.
-
Once this fusion is accomplished, the question becomes not "whether" a police state exists, but rather how acute its institutional violence against the subject population will become.
-
That condition now exists in the country that still calls itself -- without any apparent irony -- the United States of America.
-
Much alarm has been raised over the admittedly alarming news that beginning October 1, the U.S. Army's Northern Command will deploy a specialized, combat-tested unit as an "on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks."
-
This "dwell-time" domestic deployment of the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team will permit its soldiers to "use some of the [skills] they acquired in the war zone" to deal with "civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack."
-
In the context of our descent into rank imperial corruption, this small but significant development could be seen by some as the moment our rulers crossed the Rubicon.
-
But that metaphorical boundary has been in our rear-view mirror for quite some time.
-
Admittedly, there is something quite ominous about the news that "homeland tours" are expected to become a routine part of the rotation of soliders tasked to carry out missions for those who command Washington's Empire.
-
The Homeland Security apparatus is a recombinant organism, engineered from multiple strands of institutional authoritarianism.
-
The process began in earnest in the late 1960s with the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration;
-
the chimera has grown in power and malignancy because of the generation-long, trillion-dollar exercise in murderous cynicism called the "War on Drugs."
-
Indeed, it was in the context of this "war" that exceptions began to be carved out of the Posse Commitatus Act, which was intended to prevent the fusion of military and law enforcement functions within the United States.
-
The cultivation of a huge population of official informants added another critical element to the metastasizing organism of official tyranny.
-
The Drug War likewise introduced Americans to the variety of official larceny called "civil asset forfeiture," through which police and Sheriff's departments nation-wide were turned into roving bands of officially protected highway robbers.
-
The corruption of local law enforcement into federal welfare whores was an indispensable step toward the synthesis of a distinctly American police state.
-
Although we're constantly told that "everything changed" on September 11, the actual impact of The Day That (Supposedly) Changed Everything was to add a highly potent nutrient into the growth medium in which the Beast was already flourishing. This merely accelerated a process that was already well advanced.
-
Consider, as just one illustration, a series of Presidential Decision Directives, issued by Bill Clinton in his second term, that deal with the integration of the military with civilian law enforcement to deal with terrorist incidents involving Weapons of Mass Destruction or catastrophic natural disasters.
-
Apart from a few hidebound constitutionalists and easily-maligned Y2K "alarmists," nobody objected to this new intimacy between the military and civilian police.
-
Then again, nobody had become concerned over the proliferation of military-trained SWAT and tactical teams, or the creation, in 1995, of the Pentagon's Law Enforcement Support Organization (LESO), through which police and Sheriff's departments could receive military hardware of any kind they desired at concessionary prices, "as if they were a DoD [Department of Defense] organization," in the words of the program's official pitchman.
-
The results of this ... well, call it a "guided evolution" of the law enforcement system, were entirely predictable.
-
"I served in the U.S. military and after I got out I ended up becoming a cop in 2002," recalls Bill, who was Battalion Soldier of the Year in 1999 and "Top Gun" in his police academy class.
-
Bill shared his experiences in reaction to a podcast I recently did with Lew Rockwell examining the emergence of America's unitary, militarized Homeland Security state.
-
At the time he joined the force, many of the veterans "were old school, having started in law enforcement before I was born. They were tough but fair. They treated people with respect."
-
However, the "old school" officers "were forced out of the department [and it] took on a military feel," Bill continues.
-
"You were expected to take [a] `just follow orders and obey the [department administration attitude], no matter what, regardless if it was constitutional or not. The amount of force used during arrests went through the roof."
-
"Urban Shield": A SWAT operator at UC-Berkeley play-acts in a training simulation involving a stand-off with armed, militant animal rights activists. Yeah, that's a plausible scenario.
-
This militarized mindset -- the notion that the job of police was to compel "civilians" to submit to state authority -- had a tangible impact in terms of the promiscuous use of the "non-lethal" Taser weapon.
-
"When I first started we had a couple M26 Tasers of we needed them, but most people either left them at the PD or in their patrol cars," Bill relates. They were useful in a handful of instances involving armed, deranged people, and when used in those circumstances "they do save lives."
-
However, once the Taser was in use, police started to use them as instruments of "pain compliance": "Anytime anyone did anything was was not compliant, out came the Taser."
-
"The tactics the SWAT team was using were also becoming more like the military," Bill laments.
-
"We even got a military Humvee. We were now wearing BDUs and carrying fully automatic machine guns and wearing the same body armor as soldiers were in Iraq.
-
All of our 870 Remington shotguns were removed from the patrol cars and replaced with full-automatic H&K-made G36 machine guns -- to the protest of all the patrol officers, mind you.
-
If anyone spoke out they were `dealt with.'
-
In the course of 3 years they went through over 50 patrol officers. And this is a department with only about 47 officers total."
-
Once the exception, now the rule: SWAT paramilitaries put on a demonstration for teenagers attending a "Citizen Police Academy."
-
While military hardware was being forced on recalcitrant officers, those willing to carry out their assigned roles were being used to disarm civilians as the opportunity presented itself:
-
"People were having their weapons confiscated for `safe keeping' during traffic stops. [My home state] is a rural state that relies heavily on hunting for income.
-
Everyone has a gun here. Even my 88-year-old grandma carries one in her purse (yes, she has a CC permit).
-
So to take someone's guns you had better have a damn good reason, not just because they have a gun in their car and it's after 9 PM."
-
After witnessing this long train of official abuses, "many of us spoke out." Those who did so "were then run through the cleaners."
-
Bill recounts an effort by the department administration to extort perjured testimony from him against a shift Sergeant who had condemned the department's corruption.
-
Those who spoke out against corruption -- which included prosecutors and judges -- "were either fired unlawfully or quit."
-
In August 2007, after five and a half years on the force, Bill finally reached his frustration threshold and quit.
-
The sinkhole of dictatorial abuse and Sicilian corruption described by Bill is a small community in South Dakota -- that haven of sober Midwestern rectitude whose citizens aren't afflicted with a state income tax.
-
If it's this bad in the green wood, what's it like in the dry? Well, according to Bill, "these abuses do, sadly, happen in almost every town in America."
-
Much of the foregoing is grim advice. But remember that those who prepare for the worst are never disappointed.

Left Justified: CIA is taking over the churches

I didn’t think much when I met one of the evangelical pastors from an Assembly of God church, and he told me he was a former CIA agent.
-
I wondered how he came by his faith. I thought he might have had to reconcile himself with what he had done for the United States government now that he was a pastor for the Lord.
-
Add Sticky NoteBut then I met another, and then another. There seems to be a plethora of pastors who once worked as intelligence officers for the world’s largest spying corporation.
-
Add Sticky NoteNow, I’m not a paranoid person, and I don’t believe in conspiracy theories, but the thought of ex-CIA agents taking over fundamentalist congregations seems too weird.
-
Because I remember when pastors were liberal and anti-war. I remember hearing of Catholic CIA agents who blew the whistle on atrocities committed in Vietnam and Central America.
-
In fact, some of the best-known heroes of the left came from a religious background, entered the CIA and were appalled at what they were ordered to do.
-
Case in point: Daniel Ellsberg. Once a seminary student, then an officer in Vietnam, and finally working for the nation’s highest intelligence organization, he was ordered to compile all the records of our war in Vietnam into a readable history.
-
Ellsberg got them published by The New York Times, instead of keeping them secret.
-
Otherwise known as the Pentagon Papers, these records showed how America deceived its own citizens and fostered a war in that far Southeast Asian country, of which we are still feeling the effects today.
-
President Richard Nixon, to try to discredit Daniel Ellsberg, set up the “plumbers” spies who ransacked Ellsberg’s psychiatrist office. Tricky Dick then used these same plumbers to tap the Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate office buildings.
-
Other former CIA agents, like Phillip Agee and John Stockwell, told their stories of intrigue and American meddling in the affairs of other countries. All had a religious background and a penchant for telling the truth at inconvenient times.
-
And in the ’80s, it seemed Protestant churches led the forefront of the peace movement. Maybe liberals got religion when Ronald Reagan was elected President, but they opened the church doors to Central and South American refugees fleeing American imperialism.
-
Latin American “liberals” were being called Communists and were getting killed left and far left. Those that made it to our borders were given sanctuary in some of the churches of the United States.
-
The FBI hounded most of these pastors and lay people. But it was a time of religious fortitude. The congregations, most of them, stood strong against federal intrigue.
-
And they were proven correct: from Chile to Chiapas, the long arm of the CIA reached into innocent people’s lives.
-
Add Sticky NoteI’m not saying it’s a program set up by the government. But if I were to write a novel, I would use the premise of evangelical churches getting lots of support from the United States government’s right wing.
-
This may have triggered the CIA encouraging their members to find religion.
-
Add Sticky NoteIt was about the 1990s when the growth of these churches reached corporate levels, and television enhanced the conservative Christian political activists. Many of the mega congregations have a conservative bent to their politics, and I would like to know how many of those pastors got their degree from Arlington, Va.
-
There is talk that in the End Times, an Anti-Christ will show up preaching peace but planning wars.
-
And some of these churches believe God hates homosexuals and wants us to go to war and kill Muslims. They have little regard for immigrants, and some profess Jesus never asked us to help the poor. If that isn’t “anti-Christ,” I don’t know what is.
-
There is little that is more anti-Christ than the Central Intelligence Agency.
-
But it all could be an overworked imagination.

In another life, Kenneth Trentadue had been a bank robber. After serving seven years of a 20-year sentence, he was paroled in 1988 and, as ex-cons are supposed to do, tried to put his criminal past behind him.
-
He got a job with a construction firm, married, and in June, 1995, became the proud father of a son.
-
By all appearances, Trentadue, 44, had successfully turned his life around and had everything to live for.
-
But he had one problem -- a minor parole violation on his record from 1989.
-
The law caught up with him a month after his son's birth, and he was arrested.
-
On Aug. 18 he was flown from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego to the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, a major facility of the Justice Department's Bureau of Prisons, to await his hearing.
-
According to family members, he wasn't worried. At most his sentence would be six months, more likely, three. He'd probably be home for Christmas.
-
The Federal Transfer Center is a new, $80 million high-tech facility at the edge of Will Rogers World Airport. It's not only the transfer point for prisoners being taken to penitentiaries in the federal prison system, it also houses the parole board and hearing rooms.
-
Like everyone who is admitted into the prison system, Kenneth underwent routine psychological tests to determine if he had suicidal tendencies. The results indicated he didn't.
-
Nevertheless, he was placed, for some unknown reason, in a specially designed, suicide-proof cell in a special unit on the seventh floor that's segregated from the general prison population.
-
A form bearing the signature Vance Brockway -- an lais he used in his bank robbery days -- indicates he asked to be placed in protective custody. Family members say it was a forgery.
-
Officials promptly declared the death a suicide.
-
On Aug. 21, 1995, Trentadue died in that isolation cell.
-
Trentadue, who was scheduled for a parole hearing, hanged himself from an air vent using a 23-inch length of braid he fashioned from a bedsheet, according to prison officials.
-
The following day the Inspector General's Office of the Justice Department ruled that no "prosecutable federal crime had occurred."
-
Two years later, that's still the official government line despite a staggering amount of evidence indicating Trentadue was murdered.
-
Kenneth's mother, Wilma Trentadue of Westminster, Calif., was the first family member to learn of his death.
-
The phone call from acting warden Marie Carter came at 6:40 a.m., informing her that her son had committed suicide a few hours earlier, sometime between 9 p.m. the night before and 3 a.m. that morning.
-
Carter offered to have the body cremated at prison expense. Suspicious, Mrs. Trentadue said she'd consult Kenneth's wife and his brother, Jesse Trentadue, a Salt Lake City attorney.
-
Wife? Brother? Prison records didn't show he was married. Nor was there any record of his having a trial lawyer -- a former law professor -- for a brother. The records listed his mother and sister as his only family.
-
Jesse Trentadue was as suspicious as his mother.
-
No cremation, he said, and directed the body be sent to a funeral parlor near Kenneth's home in Westminster.
-
It was five days before the casket arrived. Kenneth's face was covered with an unusually thick coating of pancake makeup. His broad, six-foot frame had been dressed in a suit.
-
"They (Kenneth's mother, his wife Carmen, and sister Donna) scraped off the makeup and found he was bruised from the top of his head to the soles of his feet," says George Hansen, former seven-term Republican congressman from Idaho and founder of the U.S. Citizens Commission on Human Rights -- a newly-formed grass-roots organization which has been working closely with the Trentadue family.
-
"An autopsy showed he had been garrotted -- probably with the braided sheet. His throat was cut and torn out. His head was smashed in three places. He had been burned on the face, shoulders and tailbone with an electrical stun-gun. Under his arms were deep bruises showing how he had been held while others beat up on him. There was blood all over the place, according to the guy that had to clean it up afterwards. It was a fight for his life."
-
The cover-up of this ghastly crime began before the victim was dead.
-
A call to 911 was made at approximately 3:20 a.m., but when the paramedics arrived they weren't allowed in the cell to resuscitate Trentadue, though supposedly he was still alive.
-
Minutes later -- having been sent away, then called back to confirm his death -- they were told the massive injuries they saw on the body (now removed to another room) were caused by Trentadue falling and hitting his head on the sink while trying to hang himself. They never saw the death cell itself.
-
Investigators for Dr. Fred Jordan, Oklahoma City's chief medical examiner, were also denied access to the scene -- a violation of state and federal law, according to Jesse Trentadue.
-
This, despite the fact that Jordan's job includes investigating the deaths of prisoners at the center. Jordan performed an autopsy that morning and ruled that Kenneth Trentadue had died of asphyxiation, in a manner "unknown."
-
Without viewing the death scene, the medical examiner refused to declare the obviously battered body a suicide.
-
Jordan asked the FBI to investigate the death, but that agency soon turned the investigation over to the Bureau of Prisons.
-
Wallace Cheney, assistant director of the Bureau of Prisons, tried to assuage concerns raised by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
-
In a letter to the senator dated April 4, 1996, Cheney wrote:
"On that same morning (August 21), a representative of the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office came to the institution, viewed Kenneth Michael Trentadue and examined the cell. The cell had not been disturbed except for the removal of the body."
-
No one from his office was granted access for five months. By then the cell had been cleaned many times.
-
Jordan has publicly discounted that statement as "a lie."
-
Yet when the medical examiner's chief investigator Kevin Rowland applied Luminol, a chemical able to detect blood invisible to the eye, "the place lit up like a Christmas tree," Jordan says.
-
This corroborates descriptions by a prisoner who cleaned the cell within hours of the death, and of Rasonda Chisholm, a licensed practical nurse, who supervised the work.
-
"It was a bloodbath," said former inmate orderly Steven Cole. "There was blood on the floor and splattered all over the walls." There were bloody fingerprints around the alarm button near the door inside the cell. "From those fingerprints, it seemed to me as though he had been trying to reach the alarm button when he was killed," he said.
-
Chisholm recalled asking the attending officer about the blood. She was told Trentadue was so determined to commit suicide that he bashed his skull during a fall, then climbed on the sink to finish the job.
-
"I can't imagine, you know, losing that much blood and apiece of your skulland you're able to climb back up on the sink," said Chisholm.
-
With dogged determination, Jesse Trentadue compiled a mass of compelling evidence that counters the official version of his brother's death at every point -- including depositions from key witnesses.
-
Eventually, Attorney General Janet Reno was forced to order a federal grand jury investigation. One has been meeting off and on since last October.
-
Trentadue calls the proceedings "a sham." Witnesses Cole, Chisholm and others haven't been called, though their names were given to the federal prosecutor.
-
Last April, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, attempted to get some explanations from Reno during a committee hearing on the Justice Department's budget.
-
"I fear the Department is not taking this investigation seriously," he told her. Hatch said the department had denied his requests for information because, he was told, an investigation was "pending."
-
Reno promised to check with the prosecutors "to make sure that everything is being done that we can do."
-
Hatch tried again. "Two or three hours a month is not a very active grand jury," he said. "It looks as though somebody in the Bureau of Prisons, or having relationships with the Bureau of Prisons, murdered the man."
-
Reno said she couldn't comment, but agreed to have the matter "vigorously pursued."
-
Jesse Trentadue has filed a civil suit against officials of the Justice Department and the Bureau of Prisons for wrongful death and violation of civil rights.
-
Fortunately, the federal grand jury isn't the only vehicle for getting at the truth.
-
And an Oklahoma county grand jury, empaneled to probe further in the Oklahoma City bombing case, is also investigating the Trentadue death, prompted by the efforts of Dr. Jordan and former Rep. Hansen.
-
"We know a great deal about the case," says Hansen. "We know it was done by a 12-man SORT (Special Operations Response Team) outfit in full riot gear. We know the names of the people who cleaned up the cell and of the guy in the laundry room when the guards brought in their bloody clothes. We have the names of the guys who were on the shift that probably did the killing. They've been turned over to the grand juries."
-
What's not known is why. Hansen speculates: "One scenario is, he was a bad apple and got in a fight with the guards. But that doesn't fit from what we know about him -- and it doesn't explain why he was killed. Another scenario is the guards figured he had heard something and tried to beat it (the information) out of him. And things got out of control."
-
"No matter who did it or why, there are eight killers walking around free," says Hansen "We want them arrested and brough to justice even if they do work for the federal government."
-
Jesse Trentadue also wonders. "I go round and round on that 24 hours a day," he says. "I still have no answers."
-
"They didn't only kill him, he was extensively tortured first -- then they killed him and tried to cover it up," said Jesse Trentadue.
-
"It's not just the guards at the prison who are trying to cover this up. It's coming from the highest levels of the Justice Department."

-
A judge has reaffirmed an order that a Utah attorney can conduct taped depositions of Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols and a federal death-row inmate.
-
Attorney Jesse Trentadue says the two prisoners have information about the 1995 death of his brother, who he believes was murdered in a federal prison after guards mistook him for an accomplice in the bombing.
-
Kenneth Trentadue was found hanged in his cell in August 1995 at a federal prison in Oklahoma City, where he was being held on an alleged parole violation.
-
Add Sticky NoteAlthough the death was ruled a suicide, Trentadue family members think Kenneth died during an interrogation that got out of hand.
-
To support that theory, Jesse Trentadue has filed three Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuits seeking information on the bombing and the FBI's alleged withholding of relevant documents he has requested.
-
In September 2007, U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball gave him the go-ahead to depose Nichols and David Paul Hammer, who is on death row at the federal penitentiary at Terre Haute, Ind. The judge said information from the two men might help Trentadue better identify the existence of other records pertaining to his FOIA requests.
-
Add Sticky Note
-
Kimball rejected those arguments, but on Thursday did limit the use of video recording equipment to the rooms where the depositions are taken.
-
Both inmates already have supplied Trentadue with written affidavits concerning Timothy McVeigh, who carried out the bombing and was executed in 2001.
-
Add Sticky NoteNichols - who is serving a life sentence at the U.S. Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colo. - claims a high-ranking FBI official "apparently" was directing McVeigh in the plot.
-
Add Sticky NoteNichols and Hammer, who says he had lengthy conversations with McVeigh while the two were both housed at the Terre Haute facility, say McVeigh claimed to be an undercover operative for the military.
-
The FBI has denied any role in the bombing.
