  went down this past weekend in the Hamptons wine cellars and
  below-decks among the Chesapeake Bay sailboat fleet. All these
  hidey-holes must have been dank and fetid with the sweat of mortal
  fear.
- Will the US Government declare itself a subsidiary of General
  Electric? Will Vlad Putin be roped in to save Goldman Sachs?
- Meanwhile, the whole noisome rat maze of international counter-party
  deals was taking on sewer water and rodents of every nationality
  were seen leaping for daylight all over the fusty old motherlands

  the land of the date palm? If so, we are really in for a rough
  ride, poised as we are at the edge of the heating season here

  just approved by congress to bail out Wall Street is exactly
  the same sum of money that we send to the oil exporting nations
  this year.

  paychecks due to the turmoil in banking? It's certainly possible,
  starting with the poor drones in Mr. Schwarzenegger's motor vehicle

  land.
- Will Sarah Palin's fellow Six-packers line up around the
  parking lagoons of the suburban banks trying desperately to withdraw
  the last seventy bucks in their checking accounts? (And will
  their thoughts in the event be: this economy is fundamentally
  sound....)
- Will the supermarket shelves of chipoltle-flavored
  crunchy snacks and power drinks go empty as truckers refuse to
  deliver their loads without up-front payment?
- And how long does
  it take a hungry public to turn mean?

- We could see a parallel problem
  in the motor fuel supply sector.
- So far, gasoline shortages have
  only appeared in parts of the Southeast USA, due to interruptions
  caused by two hurricanes. If the oil tankers quit offloading
  now for lack of credible payment, then the whole nation will
  get an interesting lesson in the shortcomings of the suburban
  development pattern.
- The candidates' debate Tuesday
  night should be interesting. I don't expect too much give-and-take
  on the subject of East Ossetia this time around.
- Even at this point, the current
  crack-up in world finance makes the 1929 crash and the events
  of the 1930s look in comparison like an orderly small town auction
  of somebody's grandmother's effects.
- Back in that sepia day,
  America had plenty of everything except ready cash. We had, especially,
  plenty of our own oil, and -- you're not going to believe this
  but it's true -- the stuff was selling for as little as ten cents
  a barrel, it was so abundant.
- And yet still, America in the 1930s
  plunged into a dark depression of inactivity, loss of confidence,
  and impoverishment.
- Personally, I think we may be beyond the
  reach even of fascist authoritarianism, because unlike the programmed
  industrial masses of the 1930s, we are unused to regimentation,
  to lining up at the factory gates and the movie theaters.
- This time around, things could
  get more disorderly.
- Back
  then, society was so regimented that everybody wore uniforms
  in-and-out of the military.
- Look at movies from the 1930s. Every
  man-jack wore either a necktie and hat or overalls. The industrial
  masses behaved like termites. Once unemployment hit, they were
  waiting to be told what to do, to line up for something.
- It worked
  fabulously for Hitler, who took every advantage of this mentality.
- Luckily, the US went for Roosevelt (both FDR and Hitler entered
  office the same winter of 1933, by the way).
- FDR was more like
  everybody's kindly Uncle Frank, and his reassuring persona enabled
  Americans to suck up their bad luck and altered circumstances.
- Many of them retreated to the family farm (which still existed
  then) and waited things out -- and, anyway, the melodrama of
  the Great Depression soon resolved in the Second World War when
  Hitler's love of regimentation led him into military misadventure.
- He shouldn't have picked a fight with someone who had so much
  petroleum -- end-of-story.
- To this point (9:am Monday October 6, 2008) events have
  been proceeding under a veneer of still-just-barely-credible
  authority. We (as represented by congress) have allowed Mr. Paulson
  to advance and activate his remedies.
- Okay, what happens here and
  now?
- As things unspool further,
  he will be out of credibility, perhaps in a few days, and it's
  unlikely that his successor will have any either.
- Mr. Bernanke
  has simply gone AWOL. Notice, he has vanished from the media
  landscape.
- We may soon be hearing the declaration of various
  "emergency" measures involving the allocation of food
  and the rationing of oil products.

  may be partially rescinded as it becomes obvious that it has
  had no effect -- I believe about half the $700 has already been
  allocated, which is to say: lost.
- I realize these things sound
  pretty extreme. But forces have been set in motion and momentum
  rules.
- One thing for sure: the American public is about
  to undergo a severe mood adjustment. There will be fewer American
  Idol fans and worshippers of Donald Trump by the close of business
  on Friday.

  into the Coup that officially began on the first day of this month. This
  coup actually slipped out from behind the curtain way back in September
  of 2002 when Congress officially gave this 'License to Kill' to the president
  of the United States!
- "Since this man came to office the congress of the
  United States has failed in its duties to the public you are sworn to
  serve and to the Constitution you have sworn to uphold.
- In instance after instance you have entertained and passed
  a steady stream of un-American laws and resolutions that are squarely
  aimed at undermining the Constitutional provisions of the Bill of Rights
  and many of the Amendments to the Constitution, which are matters of
  existing law." (1)
- What has happened since has shattered any and all ideas
  of what the United States may have once been, as well as what options
  might remain, "going forward;"
- because under the terms of this
  Coup "illegality" has been made legal.

- Homeland Security is funneling money to communities
  in advance, to pay off the lawsuits that will come from the actions of
  these coup agents. (This happened in both cities where recent conventions
  were held).

  which made it legal for the president to direct troops to make war against

  right so we must divest ourselves from this empire and become a
  Republic once again.'
- All of this begins psychologically (as a thought-form)

  people have risen up in time, they can together move aggressively to arrest
  those responsible and most of the Cabal.

  their computers, and you have to declare what has taken place. Once these
  people are charged they will back-off and begin to turn on one-another.

- However there is another entire dimension to this takeover,
  which is the very public yet still very secret, seizure of financial and
  monetary powers of the nation and by extension the world.

  missed it we have surrendered our control over the purse strings of this
  country to a bunch of self-interested and self- appointed members of the
  Cabal.

  with the establishment of the Federal Reserve Bank: we are little more
  than vassals to the owners of the twelve privately owned Central Banks.

  how much this will cost, or even IF this process will even begin to solve
  the problems created by the same people that are now administering the

- "NAOMI KLEIN: When Milton Friedman turned ninety,
  the Bush White House held a birthday party for him to honor him, to honor
  his legacy, in 2002, and everyone made speeches, including George Bush,
  but there was a really good speech that was given by Donald Rumsfeld.
  I have it on my website. My favorite quote in that speech from Rumsfeld
  is this: he said, "Milton is the embodiment of the truth that ideas
  have consequences."
- So, what I want to argue here is that, among other things,
  the economic chaos that we're seeing right now on Wall Street and on
  Main Street and in Washington stems from many factors, of course, but
  among them are the ideas of Milton Friedman and many of his colleagues
  and students from this school. Ideas have consequences."
- This Coup that is only six days old is a very through
  entrapment by traitors that was designed to so completely crush America
  and Americans in order to prevent us from ever taking back this nation.

  Hundreds of Economists say this cash infusion will reward the greedy
  who caused and profited from the meltdown while prolonging it with additional
  losses for the people. The Senate in its arrogance just added another
  150 billion dollars to the bailout bill which included a lot of pork.

- According to the Boston Globe, "A coalition of groups calling itself the Main Street Coalition marched from the Treasury Department down Pennsylvania Avenue, chanting 'No deal for Wall Street, New Deal for Main Street' and handing out copies of a 'Taxpayer Invoice' for $700 billion."
- Skip Roberts of the Service Employees International Union told the Globe, "Something has to be done, but this is going to be put on the backs of the average taxpayer when they had nothing to do with it."
- According to Wired.com, the idea for the protests began with New York City journalist Arun Gupta, who last Sunday sent out an email urging a demonstration on Wall Street.
- The email quickly raced around the Net, author Naomi Klein posted it on her website, and "TrueMajority, a 700,000 member activist group headed by Ben and Jerry's co-founder Ben Cohen, sent out an action alert the next day."

  would be quickly reduced to laughter and tears by George Bush's
  ridiculous economic address to the nation.
- He put on his 9-11 suit
  and tried to warn Americans about the impending disaster: that their
  access to an infinite stream of paper money might be imperiled if
  they don't cough up hundreds of billions immediately.
- It is very
  tempting to go line by line and shout back.
- "I'm a strong
  believer in free enterprise, so my natural instinct is to oppose
  government intervention. I believe companies that make bad decisions
  should be allowed to go out of business."
- And this is
  why he nationalized airport security, created huge new bureaucracies,
  spent more than any president in American history, centralized control
  of education, put up more protectionist barriers than Clinton and
  his father combined, bailed out airlines, presided over the Sarbanes-Oxley
  reign of terror, unleashed anti-trust regulators, intensified health-care
  controls, and pretty much used every headline as an excuse to demand
  more money and power?

  has been in existence for 75 years, and no one has ever lost a
  penny on an insured deposit, and this will not change."
- But the penny
  itself has lost 94% of its value in those 75 years precisely because

  "The problems
  we're witnessing today developed over a long period of time. For
  more than a decade, a massive amount of money flowed into the
  United States from investors abroad because our country is an
  attractive and secure place to do business."

  those nasty foreigners did it to us, huh? Maybe it was Bin Laden
  who sneakily tried to create a credit bubble by investing in U.S.
  stocks!
- And here is
  his description of the grave calamity we face:
  
  "As uncertainty
  has grown, many banks have restricted lending, credit markets
  have frozen, and families and businesses have found it harder
  to borrow money."
- Imagine that!
  We might have to live within our means for a bit.
- That would actually
  be a wonderful thing. Maybe a recession would last a year or 18
  months, and then we would be back on solid footing again.
- He very
  nearly admits that too much credit is what created this mess. So
  he proposes more credit so that we can continue to live on too much
  credit.
- And then what happens next time? Ever more credit? This
  path ends in Weimar-level inflation and total destruction.

  here is the level of public opposition.
- It is somewhere between
  55 and 90 percent, depending on the way the question is worded.
  Also, it is wide and deep opposition. It is made up of Democrats,
  Republicans, liberals, conservatives, blacks, whites, rich, poor,
  men, women – just about everyone, with no systematic bias among
  the polled groups.
- In other words, we have here a wonderful thing:
  a clash of group interests, as Mises would say. It is the state
  and its friends vs. the American people.
  - A long time coming; and LONG overdue! - on 2008-09-26

- And yet the proximity to the
  election complicates matters. A lost election means no payoff, no
  matter what.
- That doesn't
  mean that Congress won't pass something or other. The administration
  is prepared to pay off every member.
- If public anger is intense enough, these guys might

  would be a glorious result. The "credit crisis," as Bush describes
  it, is nothing more than the kind of crisis a college kid faces
  when his parents cut back on the deposits to his checking account.
- It means less high living, a few more nights moping in the dorm
  rather than going out with his drinking friends. It does not mean
  the end of the world.
- The market
  is working now to make things right, to eliminate bad debt and get
  us back on a sound economic footing.
- The government can help by
  legalizing alternative monies, cutting regulations, cutting spending
  and taxing and wars (as Ron Paul says), but otherwise by doing absolutely
  nothing.
- Lehman failed on its own and yet life goes on. The same
  should happen to Goldman, Morgan, Bear, GM, and all the rest.
- This is a time of losses, stemming
  from an overinflated credit sector, one that the Austrian economists
  have warned about for many years. Listen to the Austrians now and
  permit the failures to occur.
- Free enterprise
  is a profit and loss system.
- By the way,
  since when has it been an article of our national religion that
  the economy must never, ever, under any circumstances, be permitted
  to fall into recession, even slightly? This is completely insane.
- The books you
  need to get to your congressman and staff now are America's
  Great Depression and The
  Mystery of Banking. The first explains that it was credit
  expansion and the attempt to keep prices high that prolonged the
  Depression which would otherwise have ended by 1931 or 1932. On
  this point Bernanke is all wet.
- The second
  book explains how money and banking work in a free market, as opposed
  to a subsidized, fiat-money, centralized system.
- These are the two
  most essential books of our time, because they completely overthrow
  the prevailing theory behind the bailout.
- Our choice
  is this. We can buckle down for a year-long recession and then get
  on the path to financial and economic soundness. Or we can set off
  a calamity that will last a decade or more, and perhaps even wreck
  civilization as we know it. That's our choice.

- Republican presidential nominee John McCain will support a proposed $700 billion bailout of the financial markets, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced Tuesday evening.
- Sen. McCain’s (Ariz.) support of the package had been uncertain as a growing number of Republicans criticized it harshly.

  to maintain paper values in a world economic panic and depression, and
  it is infinitely destructive to try to do this. Derivatives are an insatiable
  black hole which cannot be amortized they must be destroyed, wiped
  off the books by any means necessary.
- We can get along fine without Wall
  Street by nationalizing the Fed and going back to Hamiltonian national
  banking.
- We do not need derivatives. We do not need JP Morgan Chase. We
  do not need Goldman Sachs. We need production, infrastructure, and re-industrialization,
  not more toxic paper.
- The only adequate response to what is being
  done this week in Washington would of course be an open-ended general strike
  by the labor movement, its allies, and all persons of good will.
- Do we
  have any labor leaders or other mass leaders capable of calling for such
  a mass strike? If they exist, they should come forward and make themselves
  known right now.

- Today Bernanke admitted the Treasury has no intention of conducting a true reverse auction. Inquiring minds are considering Fed Chairman Bernanke Clarifies Government's $700 Billion Proposal .
- "I believe that under the Treasury program, auctions and other mechanisms could be designed that will give the market good information on what the hold-to-maturity price is for a large class of mortgage-related assets. If the Treasury bids for and then buys assets at a price close to the hold to maturity price, there will be substantial benefits," said Bernanke.
- In further questioning, Bernanke said the $700 billion proposed by Paulson should be "adequate," and argued that a lesser, "underwhelming" amount would only create more problems down the road. It's important to remind the public that this is not a $700 billion "expenditure," but that the auctions from the assets will earn "good value," and potentially even more, he added.

- Under a reverse auction, Treasury wouldn't bid at all. It would circulate a list of assets, and then buy them from whichever bank was willing to sell them for the lowest price.
- The way Bernanke sees the auction working, however, it's the other way around: the banks would tender their assets for sale, and then Treasury would put in a bid at what it considers "close to the hold to maturity price".

- Bernanke wants government to pay significant premium over current "firesale" price for troubled assets.
- Specifically, he wants to pay close to the "hold-to-maturity" price, which he argues is much higher than the mark-to-market firesale price. Bernanke and Paulson believes this is necessary to get banks to participate.
- This is a huge boon to banks and will likely hose taxpayers. Why?
- Because the government will not have time to figure out what the true "hold to maturity" value of these assets is. Instead, it will have to take the word of banks who have every incentive to dump their crap on taxpayers.
- The justification for this is that banks won't participate in the bailout unless you give them big incentive to do so.

- Buying troubled bank assets at above where they would be valued in a free market now and at a price which is near to the potential price when they mature is a great handout to the banks but undermines almost any chance that the Treasury will ever get any meaningful yield from the bailout.
