    But yesterday, claims that the legendary beast really does exist took a giant step forward.
  - Scientists have used microscopes to analyse of strands of hair found caught on some rocks in jungle near the India-Bangladesh border.

  - Instead, they bear a 'startling resemblance' to some collected half a century ago by Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary.
  - Researcher Ian Redmond said: 'The hairs are the most positive evidence yet that a yeti might possibly exist. It might be that the region this animal is inhabiting is remote enough for it to remain undiscovered so far. We are very excited.'
  - The 54-year-old primate expert said that he and his Oxford Brookes University colleagues had ruled out the possibility of the hairs coming from animals known to roam the area, including black bears, macaque monkeys, dogs and wild boar.
  - 'The hairs are complete with the cuticle, and between 3.3cm (1.3in) and 4.4cm (1.7in) long and thick and wiry and curved,' he said.
  - 'We haven't found a match with the most likely contenders,' he said. 'But there is a resemblance with the hairs brought back by Sir Edmund Hillary. There is the exciting prospect that these could turn out to be something very dramatic.'
  - DNA tests could help solve the yeti mystery. Mr Redmond said: 'Even if the DNA test cannot identify the creature, it should be able to work out what it is related to.
  - It could easily be an unknown primate even if it is not a yeti.' However, he admitted that his excitement at a potential scientific breakthrough was tinged with fear.
  - 'My concern is that if we do find something unusual, it will be from a very small population of animals and I would want to talk to the state government and Indian government so they are not inundated with people trying to catch one for a museum,' he said.
  - ' Whatever the hairs' origin, their owner, like humans, suffers-from split ends, the tests showed.
  - The hairs were found in the remote West Garo hills in the Indian state of Meghalaya, caught in rock on a steep slope where the ape-like creature may have been sunning himself. In 2003, a forester claimed to have seen a yeti there three days in a row.
  - The first authoritative description of the yeti was made in 1889 by British explorer Major LA Waddell.
  - Describing his experiences in Sikkim, he wrote: 'Some large footprints in the snow were alleged to be the trail of hairy wild men believed to live among the eternal snows.'
  - In 1921 a Royal Geographical Society Everest expedition found footprints made by 'a wild man of the snows' at 21,000ft and led to the creature being dubbed the ' abominable snowman'.
  - Since then, the yeti has eluded detection despite numerous attempts to find it. Perhaps the most thorough of all was the Daily Mail expedition of 1954. A team of scientists and mountaineers, supported by 200 Sherpas, scoured the Himalayas for months. They failed to spot a yeti, but unidentifiable footprints were noted.
  - Tibetan folklore has it that the yeti is nocturnal, whistles, and can kill with a single punch

- Nick: And, of course, if you go to wikipedia or some search like that you'll find that there's a lot of legends and folklore, not all positive and good ones, attached to peacock feathers and the peacock itself.
- So to find a report where somebody had seen this, like they described it like a huge, or large chimpanzee racing across the road late at night from the same area where rites and rituals have been undertaken inside a crop circle. Then, again, I find it difficult to, kind of, separate these various phenomena.

- - Nick: You know, is it just coincidence that bigfoot has been directly opposite where a crop circle was made and there were some weird rites and rituals afoot? I think it's very very unlikely that there wasn't a connection.
  - Now, to expound upon that, there are people within the UK, for example -- and I've tried this a couple of times -- who tried ritualistic magic to try and conjure these things up.
  - And there have been a number of cases where people, including me, have basically gone out into the woods -- I actually detail this in my latest book, There's Something in the Woods..
  - Nick: Yeah, I've gone out and basically tried meditation and learned how to do ritualistic magic, and then, maybe a year or so later, somebody has seen something very very similar to what I envisaged in that area.
  - Now I'm not, certainly there's nothing special about me, a number of people have done this and in their own minds as well they've had some success in this area.
  - NIck: One of the other areas that clinches it for me, at least, that there's more to bigfoot than meets the eye in Britain, is that, I think I've got three or four reports on file -- it's a very small number, but to me it's significant -- where people have been driving home late at night and they've seen this large hairy creature shamble across the road.
  - And as it's done so, anything from like a hundred to a couple of hundred yards in front of them, their headlights, or car engine, or both of them, have failed. Almost like a vehicle interference case in some UFO reports.
  - But, again, I fully realize that some people think, you know, that's just too outrageous, the idea that a bigfoot, or a living creature, could affect the headlights of a car, and yet the people relating these accounts have, to my mind at least, no reason to lie.
  - Nick: Now how we explain that, I haven't got a clue, I'll be the first to admit.
  - They come across as genuine as other people, and no axe to grind, you know, not looking for payments for the interview, concerned about not having too much publicity, in some cases quite happy for their first name to be revealed, but they don't want everybody and his brother knocking on their front door.
  - So you have to wonder what is the motivation for coming up with a really wild story like that which in many respects defies convention and reality? So I would say it's these sorts of things, having grown up in Britain, and having been exposed to British bigfoot reports, has made me appreciate more the high strangeness angle, that Is so relevant because of Britain being such a small country.
  - And, as I say, because of the locations where these things have been seen also.
  - Nick: Now when it comes to the US, I'm fully aware that most US researchers of the subject do take the approach that we're dealing with a flesh and blood animal that is simply hiding out in huge forests and has successfully managed to keep away from society for however many years, for the most part.
  - And that could well be the case. But I have to say, I have investigated, like I'm sure most researchers have, so called "fringe cases," in the US.
  - Nick: One classic one, which is also in the new book, was concerning a sighting of a bigfoot in the woods of Oklahoma, which I think was about two years ago.
  - And the couple who said they saw this huge creature just sort of stride across the path way in front of them in the woods, which they described as an immense creature, like eight foot tall or something like that.
  - Nick: And they said, and I know this gets into some wild areas, that the creature, they felt, was talking to them through their minds, almost like a telepathy, saying, "Don't come any closer, stay away."
  - Nick: And the bizarre thing was, they described it as almost being a very gentle, womanly voice, coming from this creature, as I say in the book, that looks like it could tear apart a small car!
  - And they afterward began to experience a lot of weird activity in their home, like poltergeist activity, seeing strange balls of light flitting in the woods outside of their home, things like that.
  - Now, again, you either have to say, "Well these people are just cranks," you know, seeking publicity, etc. But actually, the ironic thing is they weren't seeking publicity, rather they were looking to get some sort of idea, from someone who could, hopefully, help them as to what they saw.
  - So, you know, if they're not cranks, if they're not crazy, if they're not fantasists, again, I have to conclude that even if bigfoot is a physical creature, there are far stranger things going on with respect to these perceived paranormal aspects, poltergeist activity in the wake of an encounter.
  - And I think one of the things that parallels very closely some of the cases I investigated in America and practically all of them in Britain is this issue of the self-illuminating red eyes.
  - Nick: Now, in England, I can tell you that I don't think.. there's probably no more than a handful of the three figure reports I've got that don't mention either self-luminating red eyes, or very very bright eyes, like silver eyes or white eyes, but that don't seem to be reflecting from any particular light source.
  - Nick: Of course, you know, you can see an animals eyes in the headlights of your car if you're driving late at night, but most of the people I've spoken with said that, no, it was far stranger than that. It was almost like these eyes were lighting up half the face. They were that bright.
  - Nick: I've got a lot of reports like that, where there are these stand out red eyes.
  - And we get that in a lot of other crypto reports as well. Even some of the black cat reports in England have these aspects, and particularly the ancient black dog legends in Britain.
  - A lot of the British towns and villages have these ancient stories of phantom black dogs, kind of like The Hound of the Baskervilles, which itself was actually based on one of these legends.
  - And in these cases, the black dog is sort of like a "Grim Reaper" type character. If you see it on a lonely road late at night, there's going to be tragedy in the family, or somebody is going to die, that sort of thing.
  - Nick: And they're kind of like an archetypal legend that is instilled in much of British folklore, but again, these black dogs are described as having these huge, illuminated eyes. In some cases bright red, or silver, or white.
  - So whether or not.. to what extent that's relevant, and even what it means, I'll be the first to admit I don't know. I'd be speculating, I just haven't got a clue.
  - You know, you look at the Mothman as well, this winged creature with glowing eyes.
  - But collectively, it's these types of reports -- the locations, some of the after-effects -- that lead me to believe, as I said, even if bigfoot is physical, there's more going on.
  - Nick: Now let me talk about the paranormal, of course that's very much a simplistic term. You know, it's a catch-all term for who-knows-what. And it's also the same with people who say, well, bigfoot can flit in and out of dimensions, etc. That sounds great, but my first question is, "How do you define what a dimension is?"
  - Nick: It's these simplistic that get bandied about so much within many aspects of the Fortean world. And I think things like quantum physics, possibly, are beginning to answer some of these questions about other realities and things like that.
  - But I think it's in the very early stages and I hesitate to go down that path and fully embrace it, but equally I think it's not a responsible thing to ignore the high strangeness, fringe cases.
  - Unfortunately I know some researchers who do. They just flat out think that, you know, the witness had to be mistaken at best, or at worst, they're trying to con me and hoax me.
  - Nick: I can understand that if you're of a mindset that -- particularly if someone has seen a creature close up and they're convinced it was a fully flesh and blood animate object. But equally I think the responsibility is on us to try not to get caught up in belief systems, and to analyze all of the evidence, even if it doesn't always sit well with what we tentatively conclude.
  - I don't mind admitting some people think, when I start going off on this paranormal tangent, you know, they think, "Nick's lost it" or, you know, "He's been smoking too much of the good stuff!" So in that respect I find it -- what shall I say.. I'm trying to follow the path of staying impartial..
  - Nick: But I won't lie and say I don't come across cases that suggest there's more going on, because I do. And I don't want to ignore those cases. I want to be able to try and have an open, wide approach to the subject that doesn't cause conflicts because I believe this or I believe that.
  - Now in saying the fact that I do subscribe to the idea that at least some of these things are paranormal, as I said, one of the things I've tried to think of is, well, how can we take this to the next level?

    One thing I'd say is: If you don't like going on anecdotal evidence, you need go no further in bigfoot research until the body comes in (if it ever does).
  - For the rest of it, I've directly experienced very few of the things that Nick talks about, but I have experienced some things. But I have on the blog somewhere an interview from a policeman who had a very strange encounter (use the Infrasound search term). I find him very credible, and it's his experience (along with some others) that makes me want to really look at this side of things. I don't mind if it doesn't suit you -- everyone takes a different approach. My only thought is that we need to stop throwing out evidence because it doesn't fit our view of the world.
  - I remember when I first started bigfoot research, the self-luminous eyes nearly stopped me as soon as I learned about them. Since then I've done some research and have learned that there *are* physical ways for a suspension of salt water to emit light. Of course, until someone can actually study the eyes, it's just one loopy theory on top of another. But that's where we are, in terms of the opinion of mainstream science -- we're visiting the loopy fringe, whether you say bigfoot is just a flesh and blood descendant of Gigantopithecus, or whether you are willing to go further.
    
    Some of the very strange things people report *might* be explained by the infrasound hypothesis, though there are problems with that. But how can we ever fine-tune that hypothesis if the features of reports that would reveal it are supressed?

    I would to a degree with you about anecdotal evidence; however, the Blogsquatcher is right.
  - Without a body, any and all evidence (regardless of whether it points in the direction of flesh and blood or the paranormal, and no matter how credible the witness it) is anecdotal and all we have to work with; it's the only thing that allows us to make a framework or theory.
    
    Of course, if the body of a real Bigfoot is found, then I will be the very first to admit I screwed up in my beliefs and conclusions.
    
    As for money and Bigfoot: I think (in fact, I know!) there are a lot of misconceptions about this.
    
    For example, after living in the USA for 8 years, last year was the first year I was able to afford medical insurance and to finally get a car.
    
    Before then, it was ride the bus and hope I don't get ill.
  - And my ability to finally afford medical insurance, had nothing to do with Bigfoot or Forteana!
    
    One well known person in the world of Forteana came to visit me once and was amazed that i was living in a 20-foot by 20-foot rented room.
    
    Like many others, he imagined that author = mansion and ferrari!
    
    Most books (certainly mine) don't sell in massive quantities.
    
    My book "Man-Monkey," published last year has sold around 300 copies -in total.
    
    Given that the author gets around a dollar a book, that's not much! LOL.
    
    Now, I want to stress that I'm not complaining because I freely chose the life I live; but - as someone who has written books - I do want to keep things in perspective!

- - As any and every fan of horror movies will be acutely aware, Hollywood has had a long-standing fascination with those shape-shifting creatures of the night known as werewolves.
  - In 1941, Universal Pictures released its classic movie The Wolf Man starring Lon Cheney, Jr.
  - Two decades later, Hammer Films made their own version of the lycanthropic legend: Curse of the Werewolf.
  - And, of course, who can forget the early-1980’s productions An American Werewolf in London, Wolfen and The Howling; and latter-day movies such as Dog-Soldiers, Underworld and Van Helsing?
  - Of course, there was the 1985 production, Howling 2, which, as a result of its less-than-impressive special-effects and its wooden acting, was instantly forgettable; aside, that is, from Sybil Danning’s startling assets.
  - But, like most people, you probably think that the werewolf is just a creature of fiction, fantasy and late-night campfire-tales, right? How very wrong you are, my friends!
  - As someone who, with flashlight and camera in hand, has trekked through the spooky woods of Washington State, taken on the harsh rain-forests of Puerto Rico, and scoured the windswept wilds of Scotland in search of such beasts, I can tell you that Man-Wolf is no joke.
  - Indeed, it might just be your worst nightmare.
  - Yep: as startling and as gonzo as it may sound, there exists a large and varied body of witness testimony, legends, tales and folklore suggesting that those hairy, snarling beasts borne of a full-moon just might be all too horrifically real.
  - That’s right; you’ve got it: it’s time to order a plentiful supply of silver bullets.
  - Perhaps no-one knows this better than Wisconsin-based author Linda Godfrey, who has written two non-fiction books on werewolf encounters in the United States: The Beast of Bray Road and Hunting the American Werewolf.
  - And Godfrey is no wide-eyed, gullible fool
  - An award-winning journalist, she has put her life on the line time and again, and, by the light of a full moon, headed off into darkened forests in hot pursuit of these glowing-eyed man-wolves.
  - Similarly, Timothy Green Beckley’s new book, The Big Book of Werewolves in Reality, in Folklore, in Cinema and in Lust is packed with witness testimony relating to encounters with real-life wolf-men whose mere appearance will freeze the blood in your bones.
  - Are these creatures really genuine werewolves that are likely to tear your head off as easily as look at you? Are they paranormal entities? Or could they be examples of a flesh-and-blood animal that, like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, science has yet to firmly identify?
  - The jury, unsurprisingly, is still debating these hair-raising questions and more; however, that hasn’t stopped people such as Linda Godfrey from devoting years of their lives to tracking down their infernal quarry.
  - And it hasn’t stopped the beasts of the moon from surfacing from their darkened lairs and scaring the proverbial you-know-what out of god-fearing citizens of this fine land, either.
  - Consider, for example, the following.
  - Just recently, a report surfaced from an employee of one of the biggest satellite-TV providers in the United States, who had a truly startling late-night close encounter with a werewolf-type creature while driving through the dark and atmospheric woods near the equally dark and atmospheric Caddo Lake, Texas.
  - According to Kenneth, it was around 10.20 p.m. on the night of July 28 that as he rounded a bend in the road in question, his headlights illuminated a strange creature sitting in the middle of the road.
  - At first glance, Kenneth thought that it was simply a big bear: large and hunched over, it appeared to be looking at something in the thick trees to the right.
  - Kenneth’s amazement at seeing a bear in the road was quickly replaced by overwhelming, spine-tingling fear, however, when the creature reared up onto its muscular hind legs, and he was able to see that it was most definitely no bear.
  - He added that the creature had a “very long” dog-like snout, large, pointed ears, and a menacing look on its leathery, shiny face.
  - Rather, a shaken Kenneth said, it appeared to be “a large black wolf, but upright, and just like in one of the movies.”
  - It wasn’t exactly a local, in other words.
  - As he slowed down his vehicle, Kenneth added, the creature vanished into the woods in a series of strange, leap-like movements.
  - If, like me, you’re a full-time author of books on monstrous critters, you jump in the car, floor the accelerator, head out to the scene of all the action, and check out the evidence for yourself. And, if you’re really lucky, bag yourself a werewolf in the process.
  - Well, what do you do when confronted with a story like that?
  - Indeed, a concerted effort is now underway to try and learn more about Kenneth’s encounter with the unknown and determine if indeed predatory werewolves really do prowl the darker corners of the Lone Star State and elsewhere.
  - Take heed next time there is a full moon. The old, diabolical legends may be much more than that. And, if so, let’s hope they all look like Sybil Danning.

- - A woman on Buck Flats Road reported a Sasquatch sighting on July 26 to Brian Vike, Director of Houston British Columbia Canada (HBCC) UFO Research.
  - She made the report 29 days after the sighting simply because she didn’t not know who she should tell.
  - “It was my neighbour who said Brian was the person to talk to,” she said.
  - Since her incident, one of the woman’s friends reported a sighting on Telkwa High Road in Moricetown
  - and over the summer there have been sightings in Campbell River and in Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island.
  - Just Sunday morning, the woman heard something crashing outside near her house and her dogs were anxious to get outside.
  - “I am becoming much more aware of being out here,” said the woman whose home is surrounded by trees and bluffs. “I mean it could have been a moose or something, but you never know.”
  - The woman agreed to talk to Houston Today under a condition of anonymity.
  - At 5:45 a.m. that morning of July 28, the woman heard her dogs barking at the door. When she went down to investigate she saw that someone or something was rattling the door handle.
  - Knowing that her son was not due back from his graveyard shift for two more hours, she began to panic.
  - She eventually opened the door and the dogs were out like a shot, sniffing out something on he east side of her property.
  - When she looked out at the side of her house, she saw a creature that was walking on two legs.
  - “It was huge and it had long hair, not fur — kind of like the kind you see on an ox and a reddish brown, the colour of the trees that are killed by the pine beetle,” said the woman.
  - “And it moved so fast, by the time I opened my door it had run from the porch to the other side of the house.”
  - Once outside, the dogs pursued the creature it continued along a dried-up ravine and disappeared into a forested area. Her oldest dog didn’t return for three hours.
  - “I was worried but what do you do, tell people your dog is chasing bigfoot?” she asked. “I drove up and down the road, looking for him and eventually he came back.”
  - When she went out later that day, she found the area had markings where something very heavy had laid down the grass along the path.
  - When Vike investigated the property, he stood in the same area on the east side of the house where the women had seen the creature in attempt to gauge it’s height.
    
    Except for the markings, Vike didn’t find any other evidence but he did say what the woman saw coincides with other sightings this summer.
  - “I am just over six feet and when I stood there she said she could only see the top of my head,” said Vike. “Whatever the heck she saw that morning, she was able to see from the head to the chest, making it at least seven or eight feet.”

- - It is a common fallacy to believe Bigfoot sightings had a beginning and an ending in some presumedly hoaxed footprints in California in 1958.
  - The press had a field day a few years ago, when the man suspected of making the prints died.
  - One would have thought that was all there was to it. Nothing could be further from the truth.
  - In my home province of Alberta, for example, sightings go back to at least 1938 in modern times, and to 1811 when explorer David Thompson spotted some prints near present-day Jasper on the Athabaska River.
  - One notable encounter involved a ten-year-old girl who was a member of the Stony tribe back in 1944.
  - Together with her aunt, uncle, and various cousins, she was traveling west of Rocky Mountain House in a horse-drawn wagon on a dirt road, now the David Thompson Highway between Red Deer and the Columbia icefields.
  - When the wagon came to an abrupt halt, all the children in the back stood up and observed a seven- or eight-foot-tall manlike creature covered with hair standing in the road about 100 yards in front of them.
  - The girl’s aunt told the children to lie down in the back of the wagon while she threw a blanket over them, while her uncle exclaimed “Msnapeo!” and turned the wagon around for home.
  - The United States had a wave of sightings of Bigfoot-like creatures in the late 1860s.
  - There may have been some in Canada as well during this period, although the only direct reference I could uncover was somewhat ambiguous. It appeared in the Victoria, British Columbia, Daily Colonist on October 6, 1860.
  - The piece, titled “An Indian Tradition,” tells of the Sim-moqui.
  - It is unclear whether the reference is to a forgotten race of hairy humans or to a Sasquatch gathering.
  - The creatures were described as having heavy black whiskers and matted hair, but without knee or elbow joints.
  - It was said that they never traveled in the daytime, as the sunlight rendered them as blind as bats. They were said to have red eyes (this is a common Bigfoot feature when one is caught in car headlights).
  - The legend says that a group of Sim-moqui seized some Indian women and were eventually hunted down by the Planimooches tribe.

  - When asked, the narrator of the tale stated they continued to exist in the 1860s, saying that lots of them were still around: “They live by the side of a lake on a big mountain, and the shores of the lake are covered with gold.”
  - Were the Sim-moqui merely members of a rival tribe, or something else? You be the judge.

- - On 9/11/08, as I was waiting, and waiting on a delayed flight in Philadelphia, I had a long conversation about Bigfoot with an engineer who has worked for DuPont for 17 years.
  - He told me that the hairy beast reports from Seneca, Illinois, are still quite active and all the people he has recently worked with there talk about them all the time.
  - (My informant, Brad, is a consultant to clean up the groundwater in Seneca. The location use to be owned by DuPont but is now owned by an Australian company.)

  - The Seneca reports were in the news a great deal in 2005, and can be found in media articles such as this one here.
  - As that article mentions, four accounts from Seneca, Illinois — two of which were from June 2005, while the others date to 1979 and 1983 — were deemed credible by the BFRO.
  - In the 1960s-1970s, accounts from nearby Pekin, Illinois, were investigated by me and others, and included a Bigfoot seen swimming.

    I dunno if this is useful, but: Pantasote Inc. “Located within the heavily polluted West Virginia Ordnance Works facility, this small manufacturer of resins had its own wealth of environmental problems” Seems this company would have been on some of the WVOW land after the war….including the era of the original MM sightings.   - Tales of a giant, hairy ape-like creature trampling through the woods are running wild in a northern Interior town after a rash of Sasquatch sightings.
  - There have been three reported sightings in the area within a month, said Brian Vike, director of HBCC UFO Research.
  - "To be honest with you, I don't know what to make of all this," said Vike. "I know with UFOs we're doing well in B.C., but I don't know with the Sasquatch. I'm just trying to figure it out."
  - One of the sightings was reported by Houston resident Delores Harrie, who was at home on July 28, just after 6 p.m., when her two dogs began barking furiously.
  - She saw the doorknob rattle, and when she went outside to investigate, she saw a shaggy creature runing across the tree line into the bushes:
  - "It was huge, about seven to eight feet tall, and hairy," said Harrie, 45.
  - "He had long hair, shaggy, . . . in a pine-beetle colour, totally covered.
  - "I couldn't believe how fast he moved," she added.
  - "I can't see it being a grizzly. They run but they don't run on two legs, and I know it's not a moose either."
  - Harrie reported the incident to Vike, who investigated and recorded some strange markings on the ground.
    "Definitely, something had been there," said Vike.
    "There's some cow tracks, but this was something else - someone with a good-sized foot."
  - The other sightings were on Morgan Road in Houston in July and on Telkwa Highway Road in Moricetown, about an hour and a half away, on Aug. 27.
  - There was also a reported Sasquatch encounter in Campbell River on Aug. 31.
  - Vike said he gets periodic Sasquatch sightings across B.C. and the Pacific Northwest but it hasn't been active - until recently.
  - Harrie, who was "freaked out" about the encounter, said she's trying to be open-minded about what she saw.
    "There's so many things out there I think it would be a little crazy to think we're the only ones here."
