- We were Driving west bound on highway 1.
- Two friends and I we out driving when we came Around A corner to a straight streach by Flaming Pines youth Camp
- about 400 yards ahead we seen A very large creature standing on the side of the road facing the ditch and woods.
- When we sped up we were about 200 yards away the creature turned twoards us with his upper body. We did not see any facial features.
- It was dark brown or blk and Looked to be Hairy.
- Then As we drove closer it took 1 step in the Ditch and the next foot went in the woods. there was at least an 7 ft. gap between the woods and the side of the road. We were at the sot were it went in in no time.
- The area appeared to have been semi loggeed out with the only trees within in 150 yards were about 6"s wide. no room for it to hide.
- and now way it could have ran that far in that little time. Not sure what happened to it. would Like to know though.

- Tales of a giant, hairy ape-like creature trampling through the woods are running wild in a northern Interior town after a rash of Sasquatch sightings.
- There have been three reported sightings in the area within a month, said Brian Vike, director of HBCC UFO Research.
- "To be honest with you, I don't know what to make of all this," said Vike. "I know with UFOs we're doing well in B.C., but I don't know with the Sasquatch. I'm just trying to figure it out."
- One of the sightings was reported by Houston resident Delores Harrie, who was at home on July 28, just after 6 p.m., when her two dogs began barking furiously.
- She saw the doorknob rattle, and when she went outside to investigate, she saw a shaggy creature runing across the tree line into the bushes:
- "It was huge, about seven to eight feet tall, and hairy," said Harrie, 45.
- "He had long hair, shaggy, . . . in a pine-beetle colour, totally covered.
- "I couldn't believe how fast he moved," she added.
- "I can't see it being a grizzly. They run but they don't run on two legs, and I know it's not a moose either."
- Harrie reported the incident to Vike, who investigated and recorded some strange markings on the ground.
  "Definitely, something had been there," said Vike.
  "There's some cow tracks, but this was something else - someone with a good-sized foot."
- The other sightings were on Morgan Road in Houston in July and on Telkwa Highway Road in Moricetown, about an hour and a half away, on Aug. 27.
- There was also a reported Sasquatch encounter in Campbell River on Aug. 31.
- Vike said he gets periodic Sasquatch sightings across B.C. and the Pacific Northwest but it hasn't been active - until recently.
- Harrie, who was "freaked out" about the encounter, said she's trying to be open-minded about what she saw.
  "There's so many things out there I think it would be a little crazy to think we're the only ones here."

- A woman on Buck Flats Road reported a Sasquatch sighting on July 26 to Brian Vike, Director of Houston British Columbia Canada (HBCC) UFO Research.
- She made the report 29 days after the sighting simply because she didn’t not know who she should tell.
- “It was my neighbour who said Brian was the person to talk to,” she said.
- Since her incident, one of the woman’s friends reported a sighting on Telkwa High Road in Moricetown
- and over the summer there have been sightings in Campbell River and in Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island.
- Just Sunday morning, the woman heard something crashing outside near her house and her dogs were anxious to get outside.
- “I am becoming much more aware of being out here,” said the woman whose home is surrounded by trees and bluffs. “I mean it could have been a moose or something, but you never know.”
- The woman agreed to talk to Houston Today under a condition of anonymity.
- At 5:45 a.m. that morning of July 28, the woman heard her dogs barking at the door. When she went down to investigate she saw that someone or something was rattling the door handle.
- Knowing that her son was not due back from his graveyard shift for two more hours, she began to panic.
- She eventually opened the door and the dogs were out like a shot, sniffing out something on he east side of her property.
- When she looked out at the side of her house, she saw a creature that was walking on two legs.
- “It was huge and it had long hair, not fur — kind of like the kind you see on an ox and a reddish brown, the colour of the trees that are killed by the pine beetle,” said the woman.
- “And it moved so fast, by the time I opened my door it had run from the porch to the other side of the house.”
- Once outside, the dogs pursued the creature it continued along a dried-up ravine and disappeared into a forested area. Her oldest dog didn’t return for three hours.
- “I was worried but what do you do, tell people your dog is chasing bigfoot?” she asked. “I drove up and down the road, looking for him and eventually he came back.”
- When she went out later that day, she found the area had markings where something very heavy had laid down the grass along the path.
- When Vike investigated the property, he stood in the same area on the east side of the house where the women had seen the creature in attempt to gauge it’s height.
  
  Except for the markings, Vike didn’t find any other evidence but he did say what the woman saw coincides with other sightings this summer.
- “I am just over six feet and when I stood there she said she could only see the top of my head,” said Vike. “Whatever the heck she saw that morning, she was able to see from the head to the chest, making it at least seven or eight feet.”

- According to archaeologist David Anderson of the University of Tennessee, however, minerals in seawater can sometimes alter the carbon 14 content of bones, resulting in inaccurate radiocarbon dating results.
- The remains were found some 50 feet (15 meters) below sea level in the caves off Tulum.
- But at the time Eve of Naharon is believed to have lived there, sea levels were 200 feet (60 meters) lower, and the Yucatán Peninsula was a wide, dry prairie.
- The polar ice caps melted dramatically 8,000 to 9,000 years ago, causing sea levels to rise hundreds of feet and submerging the burial grounds of the skeletons.
- Stalactites and stalagmites then grew around the remains, preventing them from being washed out to sea.
- González has also found remains of elephants, giant sloths, and other ancient fauna in the caves.

- If González's finds do stand up to scientific scrutiny, they will raise many interesting new questions about how the Americas were first peopled.
- Many researchers once believed humans entered the New World from Asia as a single group crossing over the Bering Land Bridge no earlier than 13,500 years ago.
- But that theory is lately being debunked.
- Remains found in Monte Verde, Chile, in 1997, for example, point to the presence of people in the Americas at least 12,500 years ago,
- long before migration would have been possible through the ice-covered Arctic reaches of North America.
- Confirmation of Eve of Naharon's age could further revolutionize the thinking about the settlement of the Americas.
- This September, González will begin excavating the fourth skeleton, known as Chan hol, which he says could be even older than Eve.
- The Chan hol remains include more than ten teeth, which will allow researchers to date the specimen and gather information about Chan hol's diet.
- "When we learn more about the [Mexican finds] we'll be able to better evaluate them," said Carlos Lorenzo, a researcher at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, Spain, an expert on the subject who was not involved in the current study.
- "But in any case, if it's confirmed that Eva de Naharon is 13,000 years old, it will be a fantastic and extraordinary finding for understanding the first settlers of America."
- González said he and his team hope to publish the full results of their analysis after the excavation of the fourth skeleton.
  
  "We're not yet in the phase of research of determining how they arrived," he said. "But when we have more evidence we may be able to determine that."

- The discovery of a yellowing, cracked skull on a riverbank in New Zealand’s North Island had baffled scientists.
- Their research has shown the skull belonged to a European woman who lived about 270 years ago – a century before the first known arrival of white settlers in the country.
- Even an inquest into the woman’s death has failed to solve the mystery.
- Coroner John Kershaw, sitting in the town of Masterton, 50 miles from Wellington, decided after hearing expert opinions at the inquest that the skull belonged to a European woman aged between 40 and 45.
- ‘This suggests that the deceased was alive somewhere in the South Wairarapa region (north-east of Wellington) in or about 1740,’ said Mr Kershaw.
- Mystery: The skull is said to be of a white woman
- Mr Kershaw said despite radiocarbon dating of the skull, historians had reported that the region was not settled by Europeans until after the New Zealand Company sent settlers to Wellington in 1840.
- The skull was discovered in October 2004 by a local resident as he walked by the Ruamahunga River, south-east of the small town of Featherston.
- Two Auckland forensic pathologists, Dr Rex Ferris and Dr Tim Koelmeyer, told the inquest that the skull was not Maori – the Polynesian people who were the first known inhabitants of New Zealand – and was almost certainly a European woman.
- They said that conclusion could be drawn because of the study of the size of the skull, and comparison of specific parts of the skull, such as the cheekbones and jaw, with skulls of other races.
- The woman’s identity and cause of death could not be ascertained, and a verdict that ‘death has occurred’ was recorded.
- New Zealand was discovered by Dutch navigator Abel Tasman in December 1642, but he only journeyed along the west coast of the country and did not land anywhere in the North Island.
- And the first two European women known to arrive in the country were Kathleen Hagerty and Charlotte Edgar, British convicts who escaped from New South Wales and arrived in New Zealand in 1806.
- English explorer Captain James Cook visited the area in 1770 - but that was nearly 30 years after the mystery woman was alive in the area.
- Local archivest Gareth Winter told the coroner: 'There were no European inhabitants in the area 300 years ago.
- 'There are no records of a ship missing in New Zealand waters during this period, which might have resulted in somebody being stranded there.'
- In the meantime the skull will be kept in the Wairarapa Museum of Art and History until further research can come up with some possible answers.

- Intriguing ! Maybe a later immigrant took the skull from Europe as a memento of a family member, or a medical student imported it from Europe ? But of course it remains possible that some Europeans were there before it was officially 'discovered '

- A mummy of a middle-aged woman dating to Ancient Greek times has been discovered in a lead coffin inside a marble sarcophagus, the first clear indication of embalming in Greece from the era when the Romans ruled there.
- A research team co-led by Frank Rühli of the University of Zurich was able to show that various resins, oils and spices were used to embalm the body, dating to A.D. 300.
- Along with the skeleton, the methods partially preserved some soft tissues from the body, most of which are now brittle, thin and extremely desiccated, including eyebrows, a muscle in the hand, hair and blood cells.
- Rühli told LiveScience that this a "unique finding for this temporal and spatial setting."
- The body was covered with a gold-embroidered purple silk cloth, indicating that the woman was probably of high social status, Rühli said
- Her bones reveal that she was somewhere between 50 and 60 years old.
- The finding will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science.
- The mummy currently is held at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, Greece.
- Myrrh, fats and resins
- The sarcophagus was uncovered initially in 1962 during an archaeological dig in Northern Greece, on the eastern cemetery of Thessaloniki, which was used from the Hellenistic to the Byzantine Periods for burial and other ritual practices.
- In addition to macroscopic and anthropological analyses, electron microscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry examinations were also performed on the remains.
- These showed the presence of various embalming substances including myrrh, fats and resins.
- The lead coffin encasing the remains might also have assisted in their preservation, though the researchers were uncertain if that was intentional or effective.
- The coffin was made specifically for this corpse. The body, with a stature of about 63 inches, or 5 foot, 3 inches, lay on a wooden pallet inside the coffin and was wrapped with cotton and linen bandages.
- Writing about corpses
- Writings by Homer, Herodotus and Pliny the Elder suggest that the Ancient Greeks wrapped their dead in a funeral garment consisting of a long ankle-length robe.
- The corpse also might be washed with water and wine and treated with olive oil, but direct evidence for embalming practices and aromatics that might have been mixed into the oil has been less clear, the researchers wrote.
- "Never before [have] such embalming substances been shown for this time period in Greece," said Rühli's colleague Christina Papageorgopoulou of the University of Zurich,
- "Up to now, only written historic sources suggested that selected people were embalmed in Roman Greece."
- For instance, Alexander the Great is reported to have been preserved in beeswax, Papageorgopoulou and her colleagues wrote.
- The research was done as part of the Swiss Mummy Project, aimed at gaining information about life and death, as well as after-death alterations (e.g. embalming procedures) of historic mummies, by using mainly methods that do not destroy the tissues.
- The work of the Swiss Mummy Project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Research Fund, University of Zurich.
