Add Sticky NoteBut what is of compelling interest on this side of the pond is the way in which the bullets to shoot down American democracy were made in Britain.
- Lends credibility to the "conspiracy theorists" who contend from time to time that the USA is still a colony of Great Britain. - about 2 hours ago
-
From the innovative, creative “scientists” who wanted to “beat the crap” out of a climate change sceptic; who “just completed Mike’s Nature trick”; who “can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t”; who deleted e-mails in the interests of science; who tried to prevent publication of dissenters’ views; who coined the historic phrase “hide the decline”.

Those jokers are the main authority for the extravagant claims in the IPCC report and, by extension, for the EPA’s “Endangerment Finding”.
-
That is the authority that is being invoked to overturn the principles of 1776 in the United States.
-
The Protocols of the Elders of Norwich are the justification for EPA tyranny.
-
It is with that weighty evidence at his back that Barack Obama is going to Copenhagen to sell out American taxpayers to Third World subsidy junkies, profiteering “green” corporations and the ever entrepreneurial Al Gore.
-
This is the steal of the millennium: forget the Great Train Robbery and the Brinks Mat caper – these hoodlums are targeting $45 trillion.
-
Obama hates America and, increasingly, that sentiment is being reciprocated.
-
This is a socialist, World Government putsch.
-
Have the American people the resolution to resist it? We shall soon know.

COMMENTS
-
As a Brit, I am unbelievably jealous of the American Constitution. It is a work of art, giving true democracy and power to the people. Those who drafted it knew all too well how governments sour, and how totalitarianism devours. I just hope the American people will stand firm to defend it, while there is time left.
In the meantime, here is a petition for those Brits who are fighting back:
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/climate-fraud/index.html -
Obama has lost the plot. He has nailed his true colours to the mast of a fast sinking ship. His next illogical step? Pronounce water (vapour) as an Endangerment to Human Health. Its a greenhouse gas after all. The guy is a fruitcake. America, Wake up.
-
Couldn’t agree more. Obama has set the USA back a 100 years and not for the good of the people.
-
The Democrats are falling apart.
-
US & UK manufacturing has been killed by the severe curtailment of CO2 in such a short term. Now they are targetting the agricultural industry and consumers who eat meat or dairy produce.
-
Obama is a socialist, the loons at the UN and Nobel Foundation are his ally.
-
Well said. The fear mongering is never ending from one crisis to the next. If you look through history every dictator uses national emergencies to justify their tyranny. Take back your country and the rest of the world will follow!
-
Last night Prescott, the former ship’s steward who would struggle to spell science, told Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner, on Newsnight, the US had “a moral responsibility to help the world”. The congressman was rightly less than impressed being told that by a member of a party to whom morals are entirely foreign.
-
How long before the EUSSR makes “global-warming denial” a criminal offence?
-
am soo going to steal your bon mot, Mr Warner:
“The Protocols of the Elders of Norwich”
Yep, its true – water vapour is bad for our health, so is CO2. Sad, isn’t it, that we’re breathing it out before we can breathe in again.
Makes you wonder how oxygen-breathing life on earth actually evolved and kept going, us included. -
Meanwhile, see this:
“Climate change advisers have decided that an extensive building programme at Heathrow — including the construction of a third runway — can proceed without jeopardising the Government’s carbon emissions targets. The Committee on Climate Change will report today that 138 million extra passenger could use British airports in 2050, an increase of 60 per cent, without breaching government targets to reduce aviation emissions to below 2005 levels.”
-
So are we now going to be told to stop breathing, so that the ecowarriors can use that runway to jaunt off across the globe to their meetings?
I’m running out of cynical here …
-
Thank you for a clear-sighted article Mr Warner. We need more such articles and a lot less of the Jehovah’s Warmists’ imminent catastrophe propaganda.
-
Certain politicians, like Obama and Gordon Brown, have been counting on this AGW scare to position themselves as ’saviours of the world’ and to keep other more real problems, like the worst financial crisis in living memory, which they cannot solve, away from the public eye.
-
A great many people have fallen for it. Did you see the shameless propaganda film to open the events at Copenhagen?
-
It’s hard to believe, but a great many people were taken in by it – ‘moved to tears’ so they said.
-
One more step down the plughole of socialism.
Hello, USSA
Goodbye, America
-
“The common enemy of humanity is man.
In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up
with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming,
water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these
dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through
changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome.
The real enemy then, is humanity itself.”

Fear not despite the MSM America has millions of people who know how to protect their freedom.. I fear we head towards civil war with two sides that have a very different take on reality.. The split or acts of violence could come at any time..
Even today the MSM is still pushing the line that we should ignore the last decade of cooling and the climategate scandal and simply believe..

Ruling by decree, taxation without representation…some people have forgotten what happened the last time certain parties tried that.
-
Obozo is Richard Nixon with his brains knocked out. This con man is subverting the Constitution and he and his cabal desrve to be in prison.
-
Don’t worry Obama plans to stay in office permanently of course this will not be a problem to the left in any way shape or form. “Viva la Revolucion”. Long live the resistance.
-
Dreadful, CO2 is now officially outlawed…
What’s next?….OXYGEN?
-
“Look, it’s blackmail. It is a way of saying to Congress: Either you do cap-and-trade or we will do cap, no trade. We will regulate every aspect of American life if the EPA now has in its power — and perhaps it will enact it over time — to intrude on every aspect of American life.
-
Essentially what it can do is to regulate emissions from any institution, any enterprise, any apartment block that emits more than 250 tons of CO2 in a year, which is a very low level.
-
It [EPA] says it will raise that higher but it doesn’t actually have the authority to actually raise it. …
-
It really is what Vaclav Klaus, the president of the Czech Republic, said: Environmentalism is the new socialism.
-
It is a way for the feds — for the best and brightest in the federal government — to regulate all aspects of life. It used to be in the name of socialism, which was social equality. Now it’s in the name of the planet.
-
It is a smart strategy on the part of the left, but it is a hell of a way to do it. If you want to do it, at least you do it by the consensus of Congress. If you do it by regulation, there will be a revolution on the administration’s hands.”
Charles Krauthammer
-
It took Nixon until his second term to make so many mistakes! So the USA has a president who is as spineless/moronic as Jimmah Carter and as crooked as Tricky Dick Nixon. Wow…
-
Gerald Warner is right on target.
The evidence suggests that Obama has narcissistic personality disorder developed during his formative years in the Jeremiah Wright School of Victimhood.
-
Oh to heck with the Greenies lets just save the planet by tying plastic bags to their heads.
-
Sadly our Constitution was trashed shortly after 911. We have no control over our Congress or president. We,like the UK, are learning to live in a police state. The only difference is we are still armed.
-
My growing distrust of climate scientists is bad enough, but the thing that worries me the most is the proposed solution to environmental issues, which is to destroy national sovereignty and further enslave us all. It is a violation of inalienable rights to initiate force against anyone. To my mind, the only proper solution is private ownership of all property and environmental limits adopted by voluntarily accepted deed restrictions.

The Colorado scientist described by the Washington Post as "the World's Most Famous Hurricane Expert" says the "ClimateGate" e-mails from the United Kingdom that revealed possible data manipulation are evidence of a conspiracy among "warmists," those who believe man's actions are triggering possibly catastrophic climate change.
-
"The recent 'ClimateGate' revelations coming out of the UK University of East Anglia are but the tip of a giant iceberg of a well organized international climate warming conspiracy that has been gathering momentum for the last 25 years," said Colorado State University's Dr. William Gray.
-
His are the annual hurricane forecasts that are the standard for weather prognostications.
-
His work pioneered the science of forecasting hurricanes and he has served as weather forecaster for the United States Air Force. He is Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Science at CSU and heads the school's Department of Atmospheric Sciences Tropical Meteorology Project.
-
He was referring to e-mails and other information that had been obtained by a hacker and posted on a Russian web server that included e-mails among scientists who are part of the cadre of researchers who believe man-made global warming is an impending catastrophe for the world.
-
One e-mail said: "I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd (sic) from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline."
-
Another expressed internal doubts: "The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't. The CERES data published in the August (Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society) 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate."
-
Further, an e-mail exchange suggested the suppression of information: "Can you delete any e-mails you may have had with Keith re (Assessment Report 4)? Keith will do likewise. He's not in at the moment – minor family crisis."
-
Gray said, "This conspiracy would become much more manifest if all the e-mails of the publically funded climate research groups of the U.S. and of foreign governments were ever made public."
-
His comments are in a commentary at the online Climate Depot.com and were posted just as officials from around the globe are conferencing in Copenhagen on the issue of "global warming" and what taxes should be imposed on those who use energy.
-
"The Cap-and-Trade bill presently before Congress, the likely climate agreements coming out of the Copenhagen Conference, and the EPA's just announced decision to treat CO2 as a pollutant represents a grave threat to the industrial world's continued economic development," Gray warned.
-
"We should not allow these proposals to restrict our economic growth. Any United Nations climate bill our country might sign would act as an infringement on our country's sovereignty."
-
He said he probably would have been "concerned" over the possibility people are causing serious global climate degradation "had I not devoted my entire career of over half-a-century to the study and foreasting of meteorological and climate events."
-
"There has been an unrelenting quarter century of one-sided indoctrination of the western world by the media and by various scientists and governments concerning a coming carbon dioxide … induced global warming disaster," he said.
-
"These warming scenarios have been orchestrated by a combination of environmentalists, vested interest scientists wanting larger federal grants and publicity, the media which profits from doomsday scenario reporting, governmental bureaucrats who want more power over our lives, and socialists who want to level-out global living standards.
-
"These many alarmist groups appear to have little concern over whether their global warming prognostications are accurate, however. And they most certainly are not.
-
The alarmists believe they will be able to scare enough of our citizens into believing their propaganda that the public will be willing to follow their advice on future energy usage and agree to a lowering of their standard of living in the name of climate salvation."
-
He said there still remains to be an "honest and broad" scientific debate on the influence of CO2 on global temperature, and such models as have been used are flawed.
-
He cited a global warming of about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the last century, and that's "not a consequence of human activities."
-
"The disastrous economic consequences of restricting CO2 emissions from the present by as much as 20 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050 (as being proposed in Copenhagen) have yet to be digested by the general public. Such CO2 output decreases would cause very large increases in our energy costs, a lowering of our standard of living, and do nothing of significance to improve our climate," he said.
-
Gray launched the practice of seasonal hurricane forecasts – forecasting months in advance what might be included in a coming hurricane season. After the 2005 Atlantic season, he said he was stepping down from the primary authorship of the CSU report, turning over those duties to Philip J. Klotzbach.
-
He's long described global warming as a hoax, telling the Post three years ago, "I am of the opinion that this is one of the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the American people."
-
Myron Ebell, of the GlobalWarming.org website where "cooler heads prevail," said the e-mails obtained from the University of East Anglia were "shocking."
-
"It's kind of interesting to learn that petty politics seems to be more prevalent in the scientific community than in the political community," he said.
-
The documents, he said, "raise a huge number of questions about the integrity of a lot of people in the alarmist community.
-
"What I've seen there is a very strong effort to manage the issue by scientists and not as a scientific issue. It's very improper," he said. "One of the criticisms is that we need scientists to be scientists, and policy can be handled in public debate."
-
Phil Jones, head of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit, confirmed the documents appeared authentic. He later said he was stepping down for a time.
-
Despite the advocacy of a financially vested former vice president, Al Gore, and others, public opinion about whether mankind is causing an ultimately catastrophic rise in global temperatures is shifting.
-
U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, has urged members of Congress to consider the joint opinion of nearly 32,000 scientists, including more than 9,000 Ph.D.s, who believe humans likely have little or nothing to do with any "global warming."
-
The Petition Project, launched some 10 years ago when the first few thousand signatures were gathered, has steadily grown without any special effort or campaign
-
But in the last few years, and especially because of the release of Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth," the campaign has been reinvigorated.
-
"Mr. Gore's movie, asserting a 'consensus' and 'settled science' in agreement about human-caused global warming, conveyed the claims about human-caused global warming to ordinary moviegoers and to public-school children, to whom the film was widely distributed.
-
Unfortunately, Mr. Gore's movie contains many very serious incorrect claims which no informed, honest scientist could endorse," project spokesman and founder Art Robinson has told WND.
-
Robinson, a research professor of chemistry, cofounded the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine with Linus Pauling in 1973, and later cofounded the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine.
Paul later cited the petition results in statement to Congress.
-
"Our energy policies must be based upon scientific truth – not fictional movies or self-interested international agendas," Paul said.
-
"They should be based upon the accomplishments of technological free enterprise that have provided our modern civilization, including our energy industries. That free enterprise must not be hindered by bogus claims about imaginary disasters."
-
The petition states: "There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth."
-
Robinson has warned of serious political and economic consequences of assuming "global warming" results from mankind's actions.
-
"The campaign to severely ration hydrocarbon energy technology has now been markedly expanded," he said. "In the course of this campaign, many scientifically invalid claims about impending climate emergencies are being made. Simultaneously, proposed political actions to severely reduce hydrocarbon use now threaten the prosperity of Americans and the very existence of hundreds of millions of people in poorer countries," he told WND.

Two people have died after falling into rivers in the past 24 hours.
-
Their deaths come as the Met Office issued a severe weather warning for South-West England today.
-
A 60-year-old woman fell into a river in Hessenford, Cornwall, last night while the body of a man, aged between 30 to 40, was recovered from a river in Cardiff yesterday afternoon.

A swollen stretch of the Seaton River at Hessonford, Cornwall. A 60-year-old woman was swept to her death in the village after heavy rainfall in the area
-
Police officers dragged the woman
from the water and took her to hospital by helicopter but she was
pronounced dead. The body of a man, aged between 30 to 40, was
recovered from the River Taff yesterday afternoon. -
However in parts of Devon there were
flash floods caused by the heavy rain with some areas seeing water
levels as high as four feet. -
In Worcester the River Severn burst its
banks and flooded the racecourse allowing rowers to negotiate the track. -
On higher ground the first snows of
winter also fell in Britain yesterday. -
The Llanberis Pass in North
Wales saw an inch and a half fall while the winter sports enthusiasts
were able to get the season started in the Cairngorms in Scotland. -
Forecasters have predicted the rain continuing today with it turning to sleet and snow in areas of higher ground in Scotland, Wales and northern England.
-
Temperatures look set to fall as the week progresses and the rain clears with tomorrow expected to be a 'very cold day'.
-
These weather patterns appear in contrast to the mild winter predicted by forecasters.
-
The Met Office said yesterday there was a 50 per cent chance of this happening thanks to the Pacific weather system El Nino.
-
However many will take its prediction with a pinch of salt after it forecast a 'barbeque summer' earlier this year and it then rained throughout June, July and August.
-
The Met Office said its bold prediction was based on study of developments in El Nino. The weather system typically causes colder winters in northern Europe and warmer winters in the South but because Britain is situated in the dividing line between the opposing weather patterns it can be affected by either.
-
The huge flooding in the past ten days was caused by 'unprecedented' amounts of rainfall at the end of last week - some parts of Cumbria saw more than 12 inches in 24 hours.
-
Thousands of people's homes in towns including Keswick, Cockermouth, Ulverston and Workington were hit by the floods.
-
A total of six bridges in the county have collapsed since last week's deluge, causing major transport and logistical headaches for thousands of people.
-
Yesterday the Prince of Wales delivered a personal thank-you to emergency services for their work in the recovery operation in the flood-ravaged town of Cockermouth.

Earliest - Latest Reported Sighting:
1971 To Present -
Description:
This creature has been reported as looking like a
black panther or dark colored mountain lion. -
The
creature has large white-yellow eyes. It's size has
been reported as ranging from 3-5 feet long for the
body, with a tail of roughly 18-24 inches. -
Odors described during or right after
encounters with this creature:
None Reported -
Sounds - Speech:
The creature makes the usual hissing and growling
sounds of a large cat such as a panther or mountain
lion, -
but also has made what sounds like a woman
screaming, only the sound is very loud and down-right
scary. -
Interesting Sighting Details:
The creature haunts one of the top sites of the world
for ancient magical practices and services. -
The area is
home to ancient stone circles and burial mounds. -
There
are even giant tracts of land, shaped like figures of the
zodiac that make up the area. -
The area was also a
frequent place visited by knights templars. -
Miners who used to mine cobalt in the area for years
reported the mines were full of demons, this is where
the names 'kobolds' or minegoblins came from. -
Soldiers from the British army tracked and had the
creature surrounded in a barn. The soldiers moved
in towards the barn forming a circle as they neared it,
when they entered the barn the creature had vanished. -
Webmasters Comments About This Case:
-
The area this creature haunts is incredible for it's
occult and msytical past. -
It litteraly has numerous small
stonehenges and other sacred sites. -
The story about the creature vanishing after it was
trapped inside a barn, is certanily a sign that the
creature is a spirtual being, but it could be possible
that the creature found another way to escape, such
as a mine shaft, since the area is a source of many
old cobalt mines. -
It seems very strange though, that
this creature has been documented many times on
video, has left tracks and multiple dead animals,
has been tracked by soldiers, and sharp shooters, and
still not one has been captured or killed.

As most horror film buffs know, a werewolf is a person who changes into a wolf-like creature when the moon is full. This is a myth, as most country-dwellers who know their folklore will tell you.
-
A real werewolf is said to be a large unidentified species of wolf which has no tail and is usually quite long; often more than seven feet in length, and the animal carries out most of its hunting at night when the moon is full.
-
Most people have heard of the Beast of Bodmin Moor and the Surrey Puma.
-
But these strange creatures also go on the prowl most nights regardless of whether the moon is full or not.
-
But there is another violent creature roaming parts of the United Kingdom which has also killed people, and this animal is known as the Welsh Werewolf.
-
Records of an enormous wolf-like animal in North Wales date back to 1790, when a stagecoach travelling between Denbigh and Wrexham was attacked and overturned by an enormous black beast almost as long as the coach horses.
-
The terrifying animal tore into one of the horses and killed it, while the other horse broke free from its harness and galloped off into the night.
-
The attack took place just after dusk, with a full moon on the horizon. The moon that month seemed blood red, probably because of dust in the stratosphere from a recent forest fire in the Hatchmere area.
-
The locals thought the moon's colour was a sign that something evil was at large and the superstitious phrase, "bad moon on the rise" was whispered in travellers' inns across the region.
-
In the winter of 1791, a farmer went into his snow-covered field just seven miles east of Gresford, and he saw enormous tracks that looked like those belonging to an overgrown wolf.
-
He followed the tracks with a blacksmith for two miles, and they led to a scene of mutilation which made the villagers in the area quake with fear that night.
-
One snow-covered field was a lake of blood dotted with carcasses of sheep, cattle, and even the farmer's dog.
-
He had barricaded himself in after witnessing an enormous black animal that resembled a wolf ripping the throat out of his sheepdog.
-
The farmer was found locked up in his house in a terrible state. He wasn't harmed physically, but he was terrified.
-
The animal had then gone for the farmer, but he had managed to run into the farmhouse in time. He had bolted the heavy oaken door and hid under a table in the kitchen armed only with a pitchfork.
-
The farmer said the wolf pounded on the heavy oak door, almost knocking it off its hinges. The weird-looking animal then stood up on its hind legs like a human and looked in through the windows of the farmhouse.
-
Its eyes were blue and seemed intelligent and almost human-like. The beast foamed at the mouth as it peered in, then bolted from the window to commit carnage on the farm.
-
The church set up patrols in search of what was suspected to be a werewolf, and bands of villagers braved the freezing blizzards with lanterns, muskets and pitchforks in search of the beast, but only its tracks were ever seen.
-
Seven years later, two men walking across the Bickerton Hills in Cheshire saw something that sent them running for their lives.
-
They rushed into an inn and refused to continue their journey until morning. At dawn on the following day, the mutilated bodies of two vagrants were found in a wood just five miles from the inn.
-
The attacks by the large black wolf gradually died out, and the people of Cheshire and Wales breathed a sigh of relief.
-
But two centuries later, attacks by a large unidentified animal were reported again.
-
In February 1992, a national newspaper reported sightings of a strange bear-like animal that had been seen across Wales. In the north of the country, a farmer who had spotted the animal on the night of a full moon said he had afterwards found two of his lambs had been killed.
-
And in 2001 the local newspaper, the Evening Leader ran a series of articles about sightings of big cats, like a puma in Treuddyn, near Mold, and Bangor-on-Dee, near Wrexham.
-
Quote:
The other night two of my friends were driving home over the Horseshoe Pass towards Ruthin 1 mile past the Ponderosa cafe and they stopped to tend to an owl in the road which was still alive, they put it to the side of the road and continued on, then as they were accelerating away, what they described to me as a "bear with long forearms and walking on all 4s" came out of the hedge on the right hand side of the road. They said it was as tall as me if it stood up on its hind legs. I'm not convinced with sightings like this but they were absolutely adamant it was a bear. They went around the area asking people if they had strange pets which had got loose somehow. I thought they might have just seen a cow or a black sheep but they said it was at least 6 foot tall, both of them saw it, and I was wondering if there have been any other sightings of such a creature around these areas, in specific I would like to know if any farmers have had large amounts of livestock go missing. There is a big forest on the right of this road on the side of the hill so maybe it could live in there, also the owl is significant, maybe the animal was trying to capture it for food. Any feedback would be great!

In Northumberland they're called Padfoot; in Yorkshire, Black Shuck; on the Isle of Man, Morrey Dhoo. They're said to be very fearsome. One attacked a funeral cortege in the 17th Century and killed a dozen people.
-
Legends of phantom black dogs appear everywhere in the Celtic lands.

Cannock Chase has a rich history of weirdness: there have been numerous reports of big-cats having been seen there, and I have personally taken part in several searches for these still-elusive animals. Occasional sightings are made of wild boar; Im aware of one sighting of a kangaroo or a wallaby in the woods; an alleged encounter with a wolf; and several reports that fall into the classic "ghostly black dog" category.
-
But the first account of a man-beast in the area dates from way back in 1879, when a creature described as being half-man and half-monkey was seen on a lonely stretch of road at the town of Ranton, which is situated only a few miles from where the Cannock Chase stands.
-
We obviously can't leave that kind of statement hanging so we thought it worth digging a little further.
-
First off intrepid researcher Min Bannister braved the dangers of the National Library to find the original report refered to which was lurking in Charlotte Sophia Burne's Shropshire Folk-Lore volume 1 (1883):
-
A very weird story of an encounter with an animal ghost arose of late years within my own knowledge.
-
On the 21st of January 1879, a labouring man was employed to take a cart of luggage from Ranton in Staffordshire to Woodcock, beyond Newport in Shropshire, for the ease of a party of visitors who were going from one house to another.
-
He was late in coming back; his horse was tired, and could only crawl along at a foots pace, so that it was ten oclock at night when he arrived at the place where the highroad crosses the Birmingham and Liverpool canal.
-
Just before he reached the canal bridge, a strange black creature with great white eyes sprang out of the plantation by the roadside and alighted on his horses back.
-
He tried to push it off with his whip, but to his horror the whip went through the thing, and he dropped it on the ground in fright.
-
The poor tired horse broke into a canter, and rushed onwards at full speed with the ghost still clinging to its back. How the creature at length vanished the man hardly knew. He told his tale in the village of Woodseaves, a mile further on and so effectively frightened the hearers that one man actually stayed with friends there all night, rather than cross the terrible bridge which lay between him and his home.
-
The ghost-seer reached home at length, still in a state of excessive terror (but, as his master assured me, perfectly sober), and it was some days before he was able to leave his bed, so much was he prostrated by his fright.
-
The whip was searched for next day, and found just at the place where he said he had dropped it.
-
Now comes the curious part of the story. The adventure, as was natural, was much talked of in the neighbourhood, and of course with all sorts of variations. Some days later the mans master (Mr B___ of L__d) was surprised by a visit from a policeman, who came to request him to give information of his having been stopped and robbed on the Big Bridge on the night of the 21st January! Mr B___, much amused, denied having been robbed, either on the canal bridge or anywhere else, and told the policeman the story just related.
-
Oh was that all sir? said the disappointed policeman. Oh I know what that was. That was the Man-Monkey sir as does come again at that bridge ever since the man was drowned in the cut!
I heard this from Mr B___ himself a week or two later. -
Next I braved the dangers of the stacks of books in my house to dig out a more recent report of strangeness which also looks at other cases and explanations (it's from Jenny Randles book Mind Monsters pages 203-6 -
-
I've tried to shorten the quote but she does an excellent job with it and packs a tonne of details in so I'll quote it in full.
-
See below for further details on the book):
-
A second case was first reported to me by Barry Heathfield editor of the Staffordshire Newsletter.
-
He had received a story from two witnesses and asked for my comments. I pointed out that the location, Cannock Chase, an area of broad heath and forest between Stafford and Birmingham, had generated a lot of reports of strange phenomena.
-
Indeed I called it a 'notorious spot for sightings' and promised that an investigation would be launched, not least because physical traces were allegedly left in the wake of this one.
-
I contacted Clive Potter, who is regional investigations coordinator for the area. Along with Kevin Flannery and Susan Dean he set an immediate enquiry into motion.
-
Reg Morgan, a power station engineer, had been with his friend, Gloria Hall, to a Gingerbread meeting in Cannock on the evening of 3 August 1988.
-
Mr Morgan had recently become a widower, although still young, and the idea of the meetings was to bring single parents together for mutual support.
-
They were returning to a village near Stafford shortly after midnight as 4 August began. As they approached a bridge not far from Little Hayward Mrs Hall saw a glow ahead of them.
-
Shortly afterwards, as Mr Morgan turned the car to the right, he looked in front and saw it also. Mrs Hall had been watching for deer, not uncommon in the area late at night, and at first she instinctively warned Reg, thinking it was something that he might collide with.
-
Gloria Hall describes it as 'a big cloud on the floor all red and it lit up'.
-
She later added that it was fluorescent and slowly pulsated (or rather the central glow was being 'eclipsed' by vapour).
-
It seemed denser in the middle, with vaporous mist on the edges. They could not determine if there was any solid shape behind.
-
Reg Morgan confirmed: 'It was like a gas cloud ... like a semi-saucer shape a red glow like if you look through a fluorescent tube
-
When he first saw it the cloud was airborne and spanning the road. It moved away from them to the north, faded out, crossed the River Trent by the bridge and then briefly reappeared on the far side, before vanishing.
-
The glow was certainly self-luminous. Reconstruction at the site proved there was no ambient light and the car headlamps could not have illuminated the thing.
-
There were no smells detected or apparent after effects. But during the sighting a clear indication of the Oz factor mentioned.
-
Gloria spontaneously remarked: 'It was dead quiet. . . very: very quiet.'
-
Roger later confirmed: 'It was unbelievably quiet and Gloria emphasized: There was silence about everywhere.
-
One witness in a similar case from North Yorkshire put it in a way that has always stuck in my mind: 'Nothing was doing nothing.'
-
Furthermore, Gloria was clearly the more affected of the two. She saw it first, remember, something Reg seemed slightly puzzled by, saying at one point: 'I don't know why it was blanked out to me' Possibly important in that regard, Gloria noted: 'I felt weird' and tried to describe a vague unease or alteration in her state of consciousness.
-
Upon return they reported it immediately to the police, who took details and said that someone would come to see them Nobody ever did.
-
A friend of theirs reported it to the paper. They had not planned this, but were quite willing to tell a reporter what happened and be photographed at the site
-
On the spot, next day, they found damage to the hedge The blob had been first seen behind this hedge, which it had obscured when it rose from the ground, also obscuring a road warning sign.
-
The bark on the branches was stripped and looked as if a force had crushed it. And the leaves were dehydrated.
-
After the story appeared in the paper Reg and Gloria noted one curious anecdote A few days after the feature they passed the spot, as they do regularly. An unmarked white Land Rover was parked there (in the middle of nowhere) and two men wearing overalls were apparently examining the ground.
-
Perhaps this is just coincidence, or perhaps some official organization did take more interest in the case than it appeared to do.
-
The investigation of this case was first class. Everything that could have been done was done, although (not surprisingly) there was a concentration on the physics of the event.
-
A whole host of significant information emerged.
-
Dr Michele Clare, whom we met earlier, is by profession a plant biologist. She studied soil, bark and leaf samples (and some nearby unaffected control samples). Nothing unusual was found, but it was possible to demonstrate from the presence of micro-organisms that no substantial heating was involved.
-
This makes sense, because the witnesses felt no heat despite their close proximity to the cloud, so whatever caused the red glow was not a rise in temperature.
-
Dr Terence Meaden, editor of the Journal of Meteorology, also assisted the case study.
-
Weather records show that the conditions involved a good deal of dewy drizzle, although a clearing weather system was sweeping through. The close proximity to the River Trent should also be noted.
-
David Reynolds, a local meteorologist, visited the site with investigators for a more detailed analysis. He found some evidence of tree damage which suggested a rotating vortex could have passed by.
-
The general opinion of the weathermen involved seemed to be that the mechanical damage noted afterwards (if it was directly linked with the glowing cloud) was created by a vortex associated with the blob.
-
Certainly there was no physical evidence on the ground that any heavy, dense or metallic object had landed and taken off again.
-
The glow itself was probably ionization.
-
We may notice another point from Persinger's work. The red colour, just as theory predicts, probably occurred because of the saturation of water vapour in the atmosphere at the site. If it had been completely dry, or further from the river, the colour would have probably been blue or white.
-
Geologically, the area is on a boundary between sandstone and shale rocks. Quartz is certainly present. Three fault lines lie within less than a mile of the precise location.
-
Again there have been reports of other luminous effects in the area in the past.
-
Paul Devereux claimed Staffordshire as a primary hot spot in his initial 'earthlights' research.
-
Janet and Colin Bord list a number of incidents in the region in their survey of Modern Mysteries of Britain.
-
My own records have many others. These include a small entity with a large domed head seen in a field at Brocton, just over a mile away and a voice speaking into the mind of a witness at Oulton, apparently emerging from a column of light coming out of the ground.
-
To cap it all, less than a mile from the site is a place called Hell Hole, which seems to indicate that strange events in the area may well date back into the past.
-
The local newspaper story was headed 'Glowing UFO shock for pair' and the editor phoned me for a quote on behalf of the British UFO Research Association. But the witnesses never said it was a UFO. In fact they reported it very carefully and accurately. We impose the UFO context onto this blob.
-
Soooo weird weather, deer, earthlights, EM, etc. as explanantions and whatever the thing at ranton was it doesn't sound much like a proto-Bigfoot sighting so a zoological explanation still seems elusive.
-
If anyone has any other accounts from the area drop by and let us know.

Not werewolves but undergroundlings?
- 26 more annotations...
-
-
Cannock Chase just won't leave me alone.. I try and walk away but it keeps following m down the street shouting that my mother is a slag. Or the Fortean equivalent anyway.
-
Not only have I been described in the Cannock Chase Post as three angry Americans (I'm not) but we also have these reports cropping up that keep dragging me back:
-
So there were claims that it wasn't Bigfoot but a Big Cat.
-
Now we here that there may have been werewolf sightings but they aren't actually werewolves they are something much odder.
-
Nick Redfern gives the broader picture (and earlier news) in a round-up of reports on British werewolves but we'll cut straight to the chase (no pun intended).
-
A tribe of subterranean creatures who surface on Cannock Chase to hunt for food could be behind a rash of 'werewolf' and Big Foot sightings near Stafford.
-
Boom! No messing around straight in there. No they've got you by the short and curlies:
-
And the mysterious beings could also be responsible for a string of pet disappearances, it has been claimed.
-
Ok but has anyone investigated this?
-
West Midlands Ghost Club, our area's top paranormal investigation group, say they have been contacted by a number of shocked eye-witnesses who claim they have come to face to face with a 'hairy, wolf-type creature' at the beauty spot.
-
A scout leader and a local post man are amongst the 'credible' witnesses to contact the club. Theories behind the sightings range from a crazed tramp to aliens.
-
They seem to be doing a good job following up on previous werewolf reports (and are a group that have been arond a while and have done a lot of work in that time) but I see no troglodytes here.
-
Don't worry here it is:
But now another paranormal expert has put foward the theory the sub-human beast is not a werewolf at all - but a Stone Age throwback.
The investigator, who wishes to remain anonymous, told us: "Strange sightings in this area have been made over many years by civilians, military, police, ex-police and scout leaders on patrol. -
"Some incidents have been reported and logged but others not - some people don't want to be classed as 'mad'.
"The strangest rumour has come from a senior local resident who believes the mysterious intruders to be subterranean," he told us.
"The creatures have made their way to the surface via old earthworks to hunt, for example, local deer." -
So this is based on an anonymous source quoting an unnamed resident? Is there any evidence to back this up?
-
And, on the surface, the far-fetched tale could be easily dismissed. However, our expert added: "It's a fact that there has been significant mining activity under Cannock Chase for centuries. And it's a fact there is a high rate of domestic pet disappearance in the area - especially dogs off the lead...just ask anyone who walks their dog near the German War Cemetery..."
-
Now we don't doubt that there are odd sightings in the area (we've listed them here) and have been mining (I hope they are salt mines as we need more than a pinch of it) and I'm sure pets have gone missing but that hardly supports the wild statements.
-
What does the only named person say about this?
-
Nick Duffy, a lead member of West Midlands Ghost Club, told us he was intrugued by this new theory: "It's as likely as any of the others - so it could well be," he said.
-
Can't really fault him for this as all the other theories are pretty poor.
-
Now I'm not going to say that the Cannock Post (and affiliated news media) are full of... it but my own personal experience shows they aren't beyond playing fast and loose with the facts to a point where it more closely resembles fiction that anything that most reasonable people would call reality. Of course, Stig of the Dump may lurk beneath the unsuspecting hills of the Midlands, but the hill I'm thinking of is Jimmy Hill.
-
Now Nick Redfern has a book in the works from CFZ called The Lords of the Gray Woods: Strange Creatures of the Cannock Chase which should be interesting and informative and add new information and insight into the issue.
-
He also says he wants to take the first opportunity to get back to the Chase and go investigating. I wish him well and hope that he can penetrate the wall of unfounded statements and Chinese Whispers as I think the only way one is going to get sensible information on the whole business is
-
The one positive thing to emerge from this is that it should at least make Mac Tonnies happy, as it could fit with his cryptoterrestrial ideas.

Chase is a spooky place

-
It’s official - the Chase has been hailed one of the spookiest places in the country.
-
The beauty spot, which stretches through Stafford, is renowned for its werewolf sightings, according to a latest paranormal study.
-
It is all revealed in the work of paranormal researcher Lionel Fanthorpe, 74, from Cardiff.
-
The study looks into paranormal events in the UK during the past 25 years.
-
The study provides a breakdown of Britain’s spookiest places and focuses upon unexplained incidents reported to the police and leading paranormal organisations since the 1980s.
-
There have been 21 reported cases of werewolf sightings, with the Cannock Chase werewolf being the most renowned.
-
For years the Post has been inundated with a host of unexplained sightings - from big cats to UFOs. Our readers have been baffled by the strange phenomena.
-
For Mr Fanthorpe - who works with his wife of 52 years, Patricia - comprehensive inquiry is always key.
-
He takes his inspiration from Charles Fort, the celebrated writer and researcher into ‘anomalous phenomena’ who died in 1932 aged 57.
-
He said: “The highest form of investigation was never to regard something as so firmly proved that we don’t need to look at it again, neither should we laugh out of court anything that seems so ridiculous that it isn’t worth investigating.”
-
Mr Fanthorpe, who publishes the work on his website www.lionel-fanthorpe.com, was commissioned to do the research in support of the release of Fringe Season 1 on DVD.
-
But paranormal investigator, Nick Redfern, says it is not just werewolves that make our beauty spot one of the scariest places to be.
-
The author and researcher, who grew up near Cannock Chase, said he is still inundated with reports of strange sightings at the site.
-
Nick added: “I’m very pleased to see that the Chase has been listed as one of the spookiest places in the country. I probably get at least two big-cat reports a month from the Chase - very often from around the German Cemetery.
-
“And, over the last year, I have received seven reports of Bigfoot-type creatures, with two having been seen at Castle Ring. As well as one report of a wallaby, numerous UFO reports, and even a 15-foot-long python seen near Milford Common. So, spooky is definitely the right description.”

The preparation for the trip has been meticulous with more than six weeks of
planning. -
White House officials visited Europe on least three occasions in the run up to
the G20 summit to make sure everything runs like clockwork. -
An estimated 500 people will make up Mr Obama's entourage, including 200
secret service agents, as well as policy makers and support staff. -
He will fly to Britain tomorrow on Air Force One, flanked by cargo planes
which will hold all the transportation he needs while in Europe. -
An estimated 35 vehicles will be brought to the UK for the presidential visit.
-
Add Sticky NoteA US Air Force C-17 transporter will bring Mr Obama's armour-plated limousine,
nick-named The Beast, which is strong enough to withstand a chemical attack.- The "Beast" huh?...Just his car? - on 2009-03-31
-
It will also carry Marine One, the VH-3D helicopter which will transfer Mr
Obama from Stansted airport to the centre of London, to the US Ambassador's
residence near Regent's Park. -
Marine One never flies alone for security reasons and is just one among a
number of decoy helicopters, designed to confuse potential terrorists. -
During his visit, Mr Obama will be protected by his round-the-clock secret
service team, who ensure that the area around the President is "sterile"
with only those approved in advance allowed to approach. -
Permanently by his
side will be Reggie Love, his personal aide, who exercises with the
president and keeps a permanent supply of his favourite food and drinks to
hand. -
Mr Obama's wife Michelle will have her own bodyguards, who will form part of
her eight-strong support team, which includes a secretary and press officer. -
While on his five day trip, Mr Obama will have a team of chefs on hand to cook
anything he desires, at any time. -
If he falls ill, or is subject to any form of injury, he will be able to call
on his medical team of six who are permanently on call to deal with any
scenario. -
For their inaugural trip, Mr and Mrs Obama have been granted a half hour
private audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday. -
They will then go on to a reception for all the G20 leaders, which will also
be attended by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

-
The newly released files show that just after 9/11, the Ministry of Defence conducted a research project into psychics - with the possibility they could be used to locate terrorist cells.
-
Last night saw the UK debut of the eagerly anticipated US TV show Fringe, which takes its name from fringe science, an umbrella term for such bizarre notions as ghosts, UFOs, psychics and invisibility.
-
The series, from JJ Abrams, the creator of Lost, centres on FBI agent Olivia Dunham and uses paranormal plots following in the X-Files tradition.
-
Add Sticky NoteCoincidentally, as the show takes off, the truth of just how seriously our Government have taken fringe science is slowly emerging.
- Politics and the demonic - on 2008-10-08
-
As Abrams has said: "Though you could say it's science fiction, the weird thing about Fringe is that a lot of the stuff is at least in the realm of possibility.
-
"When Star Trek came out and they had their communicators, that was a cool dream. Now, in our pockets, we all have communicators. We read a week ago that invisibility is coming.
-
There's stuff you wouldn't think in a million years is possible, and it's happening every day."
-
That's also the official approach according to Nick Pope, who once ran the MoD's UFO project.
-
Add Sticky NoteHe said: "Everything that you think is Sci-Fi, someone in government or in the private sector is trying to get it to work."
- NOTE: At the building of the Tower of Babel in Genesis, when God came down to take a look at the project, HE stated,"...this they begin to do; now nothing they imagine will be impossible to them." - on 2008-10-08

In the Nineties, he worked for the MoD in a department blandly named Secretariat (Air Staff), looking at strange phenomena including UFOs, crop circles and even ghost sightings on military bases.
-
The research continues today.

Nick said: "As with all these fringe sciences, the reason we are doing this isn't necessarily that the MoD corporately believe in things such as anti-gravity, mind control and telepathy.
"But it is a classic example of what we call low probability, high consequence - which is basically saying it is a long shot, but if we can get just one of these fringe science things to work, the military applications would just be phenomenal."
- "Low probability - high consequence" - on 2008-10-08
-
Freedom of Information has led to the disclosure of top secret MoD documents which show the Government have been looking seriously at fringe sciences.
-
We can assume they didn't want us to know about it as the documents are marked "Secret UK eyes only" - one of the highest classifications used by the MoD.
-
One study into the phenomenon of psychics, or remote viewing as the MoD call it, was secretly commissioned only a month after the New York terror attacks.
-
A questionnaire was sent to psychics, none of whom knew it was an MoD project, and it was probably disguised as an academic study.
-
Add Sticky NoteNICK said: "It raises the question of what other academic studies looking at fringe sciences are being run by the military?"
- Some UFO phenomena and abductions? - on 2008-10-08
-
In the documents, there are hints of small breakthroughs. Testers asked psychics to identify a series of hidden images including a wine glass and a picture of Mother Teresa.
-
The files reveal the psychics "may have accessed some features of the target" - that is, the images. Later, it even talked about recruiting one or two of the psychics to "go after the sensitive targets".
-
The next part of the study was blacked out but coming so close to 9/11 would suggest that terrorists were the "targets".
-
It is well known that most police forces have used psychics for years, but the extent to which the Government and the MoD use them is unknown.
-

Nick said: "According to documents recently released, it transpires that defence intelligent staff have also been dabbling in other fringe science areas.
"These include exotic propulsion systems and even the possibility of using energy fields to modify people's behaviour, hinting at the exploration of mind control."
- Government and mind control - on 2008-10-08
-
Nick suspects much of the research is contracted out to defence corporations run by ex-military, which means the MoD can get round the Freedom of Information Act.
-
Quinitiq, the recently privatised UK defence research organisation, have been doing research into invisibility and Bae Systems were looking at anti-gravity.
-
Nick admits that when he was first given the job of looking into unexplained phenomena, he was sceptical.
But his research into UFO sightings and access to formerly classified files soon convinced him that the phenomenon raised important defence issues, especially when the witnesses were military pilots or where UFOs were tracked on radar.
-
He said about 80 per cent of UFO sightings could be explained as misidentifications of something ordinary, such as aircraft lights or satellites.
-
And he admitted that in about 15 per cent of cases there was insufficient information to draw any firm conclusions.
-
But he said approximately five per cent of sightings, including some in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, seemed to defy conventional explanation.
-
A new survey has shown that 88 per cent of people in the UK didn't know their Government had fringe science projects and 77 per cent thought it was a waste of money.
-
But Nick said: "At first, I probably thought it was a waste of time and money as well, but these are fairly modest bits of research.
-
"Tome, all the scientific progress we have made has come about because we dared to dream and push the envelope of human understanding to the limit.
-
"If we took the view that all these things are a waste of money, we probably would never have developed the aeroplane or the rocket.
-
"There were always people in history saying that things were impossible but we did it anyway. Some of these things may just be things we haven't figured out how to do yet. It seems crazy not to try."
-
Fringe stars relatively unknown Australian actress Anna Torv, probably best remembered for playing a lesbian love interest in the BBC series Mistresses, and the two-hour pilot cost £5million.
-
The show will stick to familiar paranormal territory but, in a departure from JJ Abrams' Alias and Lost, each episode can stand alone.
-
Abrams hopes people's fascination with fringe science will get them tuning in to his latest production on Sky.
-

This forced the RAF and
the MoD to think again, and the Department
has been investigating UFO sightings
pretty much continuously since then. To
date, there have been over 10,000
sightings reported to the MoD. -
HORN:
What is the MoD's policy on UFOs? - 112 more annotations...
-
-
POPE:
The policy is to investigate UFO sightings
to see whether there's evidence of
anything of any defence significance, i.e. evidence
of any threat to the defence of the UK, or
information that may be of use to us,
scientifically or militarily. -
Having
a UFO project in no way implies a
corporate belief in extraterrestrial
visitation. It simply reflects the
fact that we keep a watchful eye on our
airspace and want to know about anything
operating in the United Kingdom's Air
Defence Region. -
Although the British
effort was on a much smaller scale, the
terms of reference and methodology were
virtually identical to that of the United
States Air Force study, Project Blue Book. -
HORN:
MoD also acknowledged that a government
UFO unit, known as S4F (Air) and DI55,
existed. Tells us about this unit and what
they did (or do). -
POPE:
S4(Air) no longer exists. It was a
division that had responsibility for UFO
investigations some years ago. -
Like any
bureaucracy, the MoD undergoes frequent
reorganisations where divisions are
opened, closed, merged, split or
restructured. It's a nightmare! So, over
the years, all sorts of different areas
have had responsibility for UFOs, leading
some researchers to wrongly conclude there
are many different areas of the MoD all
working on the subject. -
In fact, at any
one time, there'll be a division that has
the lead for policy and
investigations (i.e. where I worked)
and a number of other areas on whose
specialist skills and expertise the lead
division can call. -
DI55 is part of the
Defence Intelligence Staff. They were one
of the specialist branches that I
could bring in to assist me with certain
aspects of my UFO investigations. -
Up until
a few years ago I couldn't talk about this
aspect of my work at all, or even
acknowledge the existence of DI55. -
Recently, however, details have
emerged under FOI, including some
documents relating to my own dealings
with them. But as I'm sure you'll
understand, this is still an area of my
work that I can't discuss in any great
detail. -
HORN:
How were you recruited into the UFO
Project? -
POPE:
I joined the Ministry of Defence in 1985. At
the time, the policy was to move people
every 2 or 3 years - either on level
transfer or promotion - so that everybody
gained experience in a wide range of
different jobs: policy, operations,
personnel, finance, etc. -
I'd done 2
or 3 different jobs and prior to taking up
my post on the UFO project I was
working in a division called
Secretariat(Air Staff), where I'd been seconded
into the Air Force Operations Room in
the Joint Operations Centre. -
I worked
there in the run-up to the first Gulf War,
during the war itself, and in the
aftermath of the conflict. -
It was
while working there that I was approached
and asked whether, after I was released
from duties in the Joint Operations Centre,
I would like to run the UFO project, which
was embedded in another part of
Secretariat(Air Staff). I accepted
the invitation. So, in a sense, I
was headhunted. -
HORN:
Did your views change from the time you
started working with MoD until you left
the department? -
POPE:
I knew little about the subject before I
joined and I certainly had no belief in
extraterrestrials. -
So while I was open-minded
in all my investigations, my start
point was broadly sceptical. -
As I began to
read into the archive of previous files,
and as I began to undertake my own
official research and investigation, my
views began to change and I became more
open to the possibility that some UFOs had
more exotic explanations. -
Add Sticky NoteWhat impressed
me most were cases where UFOs were seen by
trained observers such as police officers,
where they were tracked on radar, where
they were seen by pilots, and where there
was evidence to suggest that UFOs were
performing speeds and manoeuvres way ahead
of the capabilities of even our most
advanced aircraft.- The evidence convinced Pope of the reality of UFOs - on 2008-10-08
-
Add Sticky NoteMy position now is that
while I can't say what these UFOs are, the
phenomenon raises important defence,
national security and flight safety
issues.- National security issues - on 2008-10-08
-
I've seen no proof that these
things are extraterrestrial, but I don't
rule out this possibility. -
HORN:
What were your procedures / protocols for
investigating UFO sightings? -
POPE: We
used to receive 200 - 300 reports each
year and the methodology of an
investigation is fairly standard. -
Firstly,
you interview the witness to obtain as
much information as possible about the
sighting: date, time and location of the
sighting, description of the object, its
speed, its height, etc. -
Then you
attempt to correlate the sighting with
known aerial activity such as civil
flights, military exercises or weather
balloon launches. We could check with
the Royal Greenwich Observatory to see if astronomical
phenomena such as meteors or fireballs
might explain what was seen. -
We could
check to see whether any UFOs seen
visually had been tracked on radar. If
we had a photograph or video, we could get
various MoD specialists to enhance and
analyse the imagery. -
We could also
liaise with staff at the Ballistic Missile
Early Warning System at RAF Fylingdales,
where they have space-tracking radar. -
Finally,
on various scientific and technical
issues, we could liaise with the Defence
Intelligence Staff, although as I've
said previously, this is an area of my
work that I can't discuss in any detail. -
HORN:
What did you conclude about the majority
of your investigations? -
POPE:
I concluded that sightings could be
categorised as follows. Around 80% could
be explained as misidentifications of
something mundane, such as aircraft lights,
weather balloons, satellites, meteors,
etc. -
In approximately 15% of cases
there was insufficient information to make
a firm assessment. -
That left around
5% of sightings that seemed to defy any
conventional explanation. -
But while we
could say with reasonable certainty what
these 5% weren't, we couldn't say
what they were. -
They were by
definition unknown, unexplained, or
whatever word you care to use. -
HORN:
The Flying Saucer Working Party was set up
in October 1950 by Ministry of Defence
Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Henry Tizard.
Was this a reaction to the 1947 Roswell
incident or something else? -
POPE:
It wasn't a reaction to the Roswell
incident, but to increasing numbers
of UFO sightings in the UK and elsewhere,
and to the associated media coverage. -
As a
scientist, Tizard knew that any assessment
of UFOs not based on investigation was
assumption and guesswork, and therefore
meaningless. -
He didn't have any firm view
on the phenomenon but he knew UFOs were
being reported in considerable numbers and
he wanted to know what they were. -
Add Sticky NoteHORN:
Britain's most sensational UFO case
occurred in December 1980 in Rendlesham
Forest , between RAF Bentwaters and
RAF Woodbridge. Tell us about that.- Rendlesham Forest - on 2008-10-08
-
POPE:
This is the UK's most famous UFO incident
and it's sometimes referred to as
"Britain's Roswell". -
Add Sticky NoteOver a
series of nights in December 1980
UFOs were seen by dozens of United States
Air Force personnel at Bentwaters and
Woodbridge, two RAF bases operated by the
Americans.- December 1980: American military personnel encounter UFO - on 2008-10-08
-
On the first night the UFO
landed in Rendlesham Forest (which lies
between the two bases) and one of the
witnesses got close enough to touch it. -
Add Sticky NoteSketches from the USAF witness statements
clearly show a craft with strange markings
on its hull, which have been likened to
Egyptian hieroglyphs.- An American airman actually touched the UFO. Also there were strange markings on it; likened to Egyptian hieroglyphics - on 2008-10-08
-
The UFO returned on
another night and was seen by more
witnesses, including the Deputy Base
Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charles
Halt. -
At one point the UFO illuminated the
spot where Halt and his team were standing
and at another time the UFO was directly
over Woodbridge, firing beams of light
down at the base. -
Subsequently, radiation
readings were taken at the location where
the UFO had been seen on the first night.
They peaked in three indentations found
where the craft had apparently landed. -
The
MoD's Defence Intelligence Staff assessed
that the radiation levels were
significantly higher than background
levels. Subsequently it emerged that a
radar operator at RAF Watton had tracked
an object briefly, over the base. -
I
re-opened the investigation into this case
but was unable to determine what happened.
It remains unexplained. -
Add Sticky NoteHORN:
On 1 November 2006 you were involved
with a Channel Five documentary, The
British UFO Mystery. The programme focused on
a wave of UFO sightings that occurred
on 30 and 31 March 1993 -- The Cosford
Incident -- where many of the witnesses
were police officers and military
personnel. What did you conclude about
this case?- March 30 & 31, 1993: the Cosford Incident - on 2008-10-08
-
POPE:
We had a wave of UFO sightings over the UK
for a period of about six hours. Many
of the witnesses included police officers
and military personnel. -
At one point the
UFO flew over RAF Cosford and RAF Shawbury. -
Add Sticky NoteWitnesses described a vast
triangular-shaped craft capable of moving
from a virtual hover to speeds of well
over a thousand miles an hour in seconds.- The Cosford Incident: "vast triangular craft" - on 2008-10-08
-
I led the investigation at the time and
even my Head of Division, who was
extremely sceptical about UFOs, was
intrigued by this case. -
We even briefed
the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff, one
of the UK's most senior RAF officers. -
Channel Five's recent investigative
documentary exposed the case to over a
million viewers on primetime terrestrial
TV and led to over 30 new witnesses coming
forward. The production company had
obtained the MoD case file on the incident
(which ran to over 100 pages of
documentation) under the Freedom of
Information Act and asked me to front the
programme, talking viewers through the
case an the MoD investigation. -
As a result
of the interest generated by the programme,
the MoD made the file available on its
website. -
The file includes my sceptical
Head of Division's briefing to the
Assistant Chief of the Air Staff, which
states "In summary, there would seem
to be some evidence on this occasion that
an unidentified object (or objects) of
unknown origin was operating over the
UK". -
Add Sticky NoteThis is as close as
the MoD will ever get to saying that
there's more to UFOs than
misidentifications or hoaxes.- Near admission - on 2008-10-08
-
HORN:
What were some of the other interesting
UFO cases you investigated? -
POPE:
It's difficult to single out interesting
cases unless they're on the scale of
something like Rendlesham Forest or the
Cosford Incident. -
Also, it's
difficult for me to talk about cases the
MoD hasn't yet released. I can't
anticipate what the Department will
release and what they may withhold, so
you'll have to await the release of the
files. -
But in general terms I can say that
other interesting cases included some
radar/visual cases, cases where UFOs were
seen close to military bases, and some
interesting sightings by civil and
military pilots - including a few
near-misses, where collisions were only
narrowly avoided. -
Both the MoD and our
Civil Aviation Authority has information
on several such cases, and whatever one's
beliefs about UFOs, the flight safety
implications should be of concern to
everyone. -
When the MoD released Project
Condign last year (a highly classified
study that had its roots in discussions I
had with the Defence Intelligence Staff in
1993) some of the most interesting
recommendations related to this point. -
One
read "No attempt should be made to
out-manoeuvre a UAP during
interception". -
Another recommendation
states "At higher altitudes, although
UAP appear to be benign to civil
air-traffic, pilots should be advised not
to manoeuvre, other than to place the
object astern, if possible". -
Add Sticky NoteUAP
was the abbreviated form of Unidentified
Aerial Phenomena, a term we decided
to use instead of UFO, as it sounded
more scientific.- Definition of UAP - on 2008-10-08
-
HORN:
Why did you leave the MoD's UFO
department? -
POPE:
After having done the job for 3 years I
was promoted and moved to another post at
a higher grade. -
There's certainly no
truth to the rumour that I was moved
because I was getting too close to the
truth, as some conspiracy theorists
allege. After I left, I took up a
financial policy post, before moving to a
security-related job. -
HORN:
Yet you still work in a different capacity
at the Ministry of Defence, correct? -
I'd greatly enjoyed
my 21 year career, but decided it was time
to seek fresh challenges. I have a number
of business interests and I now have more
time to pursue these. -
POPE:
No. I resigned last year and left the MoD
at the end of October. -
HORN:
I once asked Stanton Friedman a similar
question I'd like to ask you. How do you
respond to allegations that you're
involved in a cover-up or that you're a
disinformation agent? -
POPE:
How can I respond? You can't
prove a negative. The rumour
isn't true, but if people believe this
sort of thing they won't believe my
denial, or the MoD's confirmation of my
departure. -
It does amaze
me though, how many people genuinely seem
to believe this. I get asked it a lot and
see the theory discussed frequently on
various websites and discussion lists. -
The
bottom line is that I worked for the
Government for 21 years, for the very
people who many conspiracy theorists
believe are covering up the truth about
UFOs. To them, the government are the bad
guys, so I'm the bad guy, who's part of
the conspiracy. -
HORN:
Your
investigations ultimately led to other
unexplained phenomena. What do you make of
so-called alien abductions? -
POPE:
While none of these other subjects
were in the UFO project's terms of
reference, they inevitably ended up on my
desk, because there was nowhere else to
send them. -
Add Sticky NoteI've probably looked into
around 100 cases of alien abduction. Some
of these cases were reported to me at the
MoD, but most people contacted me after
I'd written a book on the subject, called
The Uninvited.- "The Uninvited": Nick Pope's book on alien abductions - on 2008-10-08
-
Some sceptics say
these people are attention seekers after
their 15 minutes of fame, but this clearly
isn't true. -
Out of the hundred or so
abductees I've been involved with,
maybe half a dozen are interested in
engaging with the media or the UFO
community. Most aren't interested. -
Other
people suggest these people are
delusional, but again, this theory doesn't
stand up to scrutiny. The few scientists
who have looked at this phenomenon have
found no signs of psychopathology in the
abductees, and evidence (in terms of
increased heartrate and perspiration) that
they genuinely believe they've had these
experiences. -
The use of regression
hypnosis in some of these cases clouds the
issue. The scientific community
generally doesn't accept the validity of
the technique in recovering suppressed
memories, and indeed many believe it can
distort memories or even create false
ones. -
But regression hypnosis isn't used
in all abduction cases, so we can't say
False Memory Syndrome is the answer.
Something's going on with these people,
but the truthful answer is that we don't
know what's happening. -
HORN: Crop
circles? -
POPE:
Some of the small, single circles (and
that's where the phenomenon started) may
be attributable to some form of
meteorological phenomenon such as a
whirlwind or wind vortex. -
Add Sticky NoteAs for the
more complex ones - the so-called
pictograms - there's no doubt in my mind
that most of them are made by people.- Manmade crop circles - on 2008-10-08
-
I've
seen it done. Some of the people
involved in this are highly skilled and
motivated, plan the formations
meticulously, well in advance, and split
the work between several people. -
Some
people call them hoaxers but many of the
people involved see themselves as
conceptual artists. Do I completely
rule out a more exotic explanation? No. In
my line of work, I tried never to rule
anything out altogether, and always tried
to keep an open mind. -
HORN:
Ghosts? -
POPE:
People associate ghosts with old houses,
churches or pubs, but in my experience
there are just as many reports of ghosts
on military bases as anywhere else. -
Add Sticky NoteI've
received numerous such reports, often from
the MoD Police officers or guards who have
to patrol these areas at night. Now, these
are pretty tough guys, as you can imagine,
but some of them have been really spooked
by what they've seen.- Ghosts "haunting" military bases - on 2008-10-08
-
All the classic
signs are present in many of these cases: unexplained
cold spots, guard dogs growling, with
their hackles rising, at certain locations.
And actual ghosts seen at sights where
people have been killed. -
Add Sticky NoteGhosts have
even been seen in MoD Main Building
itself, where the modern headquarters is
built on the site of the much older
Whitehall Palace.- Modern MoD building constructed on parts of old "Whitehall Palace" - on 2008-10-08
-
The remains of Henry
VIII's wine cellar are perfectly preserved
in the basement, and there are some
areas of the building where guards don't
like to patrol alone at night. -
Add Sticky NotePerhaps the
oddest report I received was an animal
ghost story. During the Second World War,
Wing Commander Guy Gibson (who led
the famous Damn Busters raid) had a dog
that was knocked down by a car and
killed, shortly before the raid. The ghost
of this dog has been seen several times at
RAF Scampton.- Ghost dog? - on 2008-10-08
-
HORN:
You've written extensively about your work
with MoD. Is this not a problem since you
signed the Official Secrets Act? -
POPE:
I signed the Official Secrets Act on my
first day in the MoD and even though I've
left, it binds me for life. -
But it
doesn't preclude writing or speaking about
my work. Politicians invariably keep
diaries and write memoirs, and military
officers often write accounts of their
careers. There's no bar on this sort
of activity, provided you follow various
rules and procedures, the most obvious one
being the absolute prohibition on
revealing any classified information. -
HORN:
Your books include "Open Skies,
Closed Minds", "The
Uninvited", "Operation Thunder
Child", and "Operation Lightning
Strike". Anything else you are
working on? -
POPE:
Researching and writing a book typically
takes me between 6 months and a year.
While I intend to write further books
(both non-fiction and fiction) at some
stage, the pressure of other commitments
means that I simply don't have time for
this at the moment. -
HORN:
This is the 60th anniversary of the
Roswell UFO incident. What is your opinion
about what happened there in 1947? -
But
in my experience, if UFO sightings aren't solved
quickly, they're unlikely to be solved at
all. -
POPE:
Clearly something crashed. -
With that in mind, 60 years on,
with most of the direct participants dead,
the chances are we'll never be certain
what happened at Roswell. Unless some
'smoking gun' emerges that's beyond
dispute, I suspect the events will remain
a mystery. -
HORN:
How do you think ufology can best use the
60th anniversary of Roswell to promote the
subject? -
But,
fascinating though Roswell is, ufology
should look forward as well as back.
Promoting ufology should involve not just
the old cases, but recent ones such as the
sighting of a UFO over O'Hare airport or
the sighting by the pilot who saw a UFO in
the vicinity of the Channel Islands. -
It
should also focus on the release of UFO
files by the British and French
governments. Finally, ufology might also
consider how it could best engage
with the scientific community, and in
particular engage in constructive dialogue
with those involved in SETI research. -

-
Almost exactly seven years ago Al Qaeda terrorists targeted their hijacked planes into the Twin Towers at the heart of New York’s financial centre — and the world was transformed.
-
There were no deaths this week, but the effects of the carnage on the financial
markets will be far more profound and destabilising than the 9/11 atrocity. -
Add Sticky NoteFor almost all of us, it will, I predict, be a change for the worse, and for a large
minority the consequences will be extremely distressing.- Financial melt down leading to NWO will be devastating - on 2008-09-24

Add Sticky NoteThe Western world — Britain, Europe and the U.S. — has moved from excess to
austerity overnight.- As the Biblical prophets have stated they would - on 2008-09-24
-
This week’s financial typhoon will savagely impact living
standards. -
Add Sticky NoteIn due course, it will topple governments and lead to a permanent transfer of
economic and political power from Europe and America to the emergent and, in some
cases, such as China, semi-barbarous economies in the East.- Rise of the "Kings of the East" - on 2008-09-24
-
I know I will be accused of being unnecessarily apocalyptic and irresponsibly
negative, but I believe that the greatest mistake we can now make is to
downplay the seriousness of the situation and bury our heads in the sand. -
The seismic events which have seen the near-destruction of the investment banking sector and the collapse of insurance giant AIG are on the scale of the Great Crash of 1929.
-
Add Sticky NoteThat was such a disaster because it created conditions for the emergence of fascism in continental Europe and then World War II.
- And will again...if not sooner, later for sure. - on 2008-09-24
-
Although it is hard to predict the consequences, we should expect ramifications of equal significance —
-
Add Sticky Noteincluding the re-emergence of violent Far Right parties across the globe.
- Fascism as the ruling political philosophy; as the Lord showed me in 1993 - on 2008-09-24
-
Some experts were talking this week as if the financial crisis was nearly over. They
could not be more wrong. -
The downturn has only just begun — and for most citizens
uninvolved with finance the consequences have not been felt at all. -
But they will be felt very soon and very brutally.
-
The British economy is in the same position as the Texan coast earlier this month as Hurricane Ike approached — apparently calm, with life going on as normal, but an almighty storm is raging just
over the horizon and heading our way with terrifying speed. -
We can expect a sharp increase in personal bankruptcies. Yet the numbers will not peak until this time next year at the earliest.
-
Hundreds of thousands of people will lose their jobs, with many forced to sell their houses. Property prices will slump.
-
Many careers will be
destroyed. This is considerably worse than the downturn of the early 1990s. -
There will be extreme human suffering, panic and despair.
-
The orthodoxy from the British Government, the Confederation of British Industry and elsewhere that there will be a mild slowdown ending late next year is nonsense.
-
Add Sticky NoteThis crisis is vicious, dynamic and only just beginning.
- The crisis - on 2008-09-24
-
Even those of us lucky enough not to lose our jobs and our homes will have friends and relatives who do.
-
Let us examine, first, the fate of City bankers from firms such as Lehman Brothers — all summarily dismissed when their firm went under this week.
-
They will receive no severance payment and almost no chance ever again of benefiting from the six-figure salaries and massive bonuses they have taken for
granted over the past few years. -
That means they cannot service the huge mortgages they have taken out on hugely expensive houses.
-
So this weekend they have become forced sellers — which means that thousands of new For Sale signs will be going up in London and the South-East
in the coming weeks. -
If these unemployed investment bankers had the misfortune to buy anywhere near the top of the market, they now face the prospect of personal bankruptcy.
-
This is because they will find that their houses are worth much less than they paid for
them, and will therefore be unable to repay their loan. -
Many of the younger bankers — those in their 20s and 30s with young families — now face utter disaster.
-
Add Sticky NoteOf course, there is scant public sympathy for these former ‘masters of the universe’ who enjoyed good times.
- And neither here in the States either - on 2008-09-24
-
But we already know that Thursday’s merger of Lloyds Bank and HBOS (supposing it
is completed: contrary to statements by Chancellor Alistair Darling, this is by no means certain) will lead directly to the loss of some 40,000 jobs among
bank workers. -
There will be bloodletting on every High Street where there is both an HBOS and Lloyds outlet — one branch will undoubtedly be closed.
-
But that body-blow is just the start. Over the coming months, the financial typhoon will mercilessly spread outwards and wreak devastation on the economy.
-
Banks will foreclose on thousands of small businesses.Massive corporate failures are inevitable.
These disasters will then rebound on the financial sector, as company bankruptcies
and plunging house prices force fresh balance sheet write-downs and yet more sackings. -
Unemployment — already rising fast and up 80,000 over the summer — is set to surge ahead and will increase well above the two million predicted by economists.
-
This will produce a vicious spiral. Every worker out of a job means less tax receipts and higher welfare payments.
-
In last March’s Budget (a work of fiction when it was published), Alistair Darling forecast borrowing this year of £43 billion. Even at the time, this figure was shockingly large.
-
It meant that only Egypt, Pakistan and Hungary among significant world economies had more profligate government spending than Britain.
-
As of this weekend, Government borrowing is out of control.
-
It will soar nearer £100 billion next year — more than double Darling’s estimate. This will cast doubt about Britain’s ability to finance our debt in the international
credit markets. -
The International Monetary Fund has already warned Darling about his reckless spending. In the months to come, it will demand cuts in government spending, just as it did in the 1970s when the then Labour Chancellor, Denis Healey, had to beg for an IMF loan.
-
Darling will have to take urgent, painful action to reverse the splurge of recent expenditure — welcomed by financially ignorant Labour MPs — on public services, in particular health and education.
-
And whereas the responsible wing of the Labour Government, as it did in the 1970s, will support this prudence, the Left will call for extra spending to save jobs.
-
It is likely that the Labour Party will split on this issue — just as it did in the aftermath of the Crash in 1931 and again at the start of the 1980s.
-
Savers should thus brace themselves for the return of double-digit price rises not seen since the early 1980s.
-
Driven by poverty, crime will also soar — particularly crimes against property.
-
We should also brace ourselves for a return of political violence to the streets.
-
Certainly the British National Party will use the economic downturn to agitate against
immigrants, accusing them of having ‘stolen British jobs’. -
The BNP made some striking gains at last May’s elections, and these will continue in the European elections next June.
-
This is the troubling prospect we face. But the worldwide consequences are just as
significant and we can expect the Euro to fail under the strain of economic collapse. -
Add Sticky NoteThe Euro has never been tested by adversity. The single currency’s architects made one foolish mistake when they set it up ten years ago: they established monetary union ahead of political union.
- In Europe: monetary unity came before political union....a big mistake - on 2008-09-24
-
In long-established democracies such as Britain and the United States, it is natural for one area of the country to help the other in times of difficulty.
-
For instance, there was no strong objection when taxpayers in the South were asked to bail out Northern Rock, even though its operations were concentrated in the North-East.
-
However, that is not the case in mainland Europe where French taxpayers would refuse to contribute huge sums to bail out, say, the Italian banking sector.
-
just as Britain’s membership of the European monetary system was smashed on Black Wednesday 1992.
-
Add Sticky NoteThat is why the Euro is likely to be destroyed by the coming economic storm —
- Threat to the Euro? - on 2008-09-24
-
The truth is that this week’s seismic events will come as a crashing humiliation to the European political class.

Ever since the end of World War II, America has been the world’s policeman.
-
It has been able to play this role, and see off perceived enemies, such as Soviet Russia and Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, because for the past 60 years it has been the greatest global economic power.

Add Sticky NoteThe most important question facing the world today is whether the U.S. — already crippled by the estimated $2 trillion cost of financing the Iraq occupation — can afford to continue its global role.

The historical precedent is far from encouraging.
After the 1929 crash, the U.S. turned in on itself, resorting to protectionism.

It re-engaged with the world only after the attack by Japan at Pearl Harbour in December 1941.
-
It is too early to say for sure, but it is possible that America is at a similar turning point in its history.
-
President Bush’s decision to pour taxpayers’ money into so many bankrupt financial institutions has led to an explosion of U.S. national debt which will be hugely exacerbated by yesterday’s move in Washington.

As a result, U.S. global creditworthiness is in jeopardy, and it is likely that at some stage over the next decade the dollar will lose its unchallenged status as the world’s reserve currency.

There are signs that this process has already begun.

Financial crisis: Default by the US government is no longer unthinkable

So, here we are - the start of a new world order.
-
After the
tumultuous events of the last fortnight, the global economic
landscape will never look the same again. -
Power has tangibly shifted - away from the United States and the
Western world generally, and towards the fast-growing giants of the
East. That's been happening for some years now. -
But September 2008 marks the moment when the scale of our
excesses, the extent of our debts and the moral bankruptcy of our
financial regulatory system finally began to be truly exposed. -

Hard times: central banks have acted to avoid a
repeat of 1929 -
I say began to be exposed. Back in March, Standard and
Poor's, the US ratings agency, estimated some $285bn (£156bn)
of mortgage-backed securities would eventually be written-off by the
global banking sector. On Friday, almost unnoticed amid the panic,
that forecast was upped to $378bn. -
But the extent of the 33 per cent one-off
increase in S&P's estimate speaks volumes. It reflects just
how little anyone truly knows about either the ultimate size of the
sub-prime losses or who ultimately holds the related securities. -
In reality, total credit losses will be much higher - at least
$750bn in my view. -
But with one in ten US mortgages now "delinquent" or
"in foreclosure", and house prices still falling, such
"toxic waste" is burning holes in balance sheets wherever
it sits. That's why this crisis is far from over. -
It's difficult to overstate the enormity of what happened
last week. -
By any standard, the collapse of Lehman Brothers was a
dramatic - and alarming event. -
One of the biggest names on Wall
Street, the 158-year old bank was consumed by the scale of its
losses and crippled by executive feuds. Deemed by the US Federal
Reserve to be "sufficiently unconnected" to the rest of
the global financial system, Lehman was allowed to fold. -
In contrast, American International Group, the world's
largest insurer, was judged "too interconnected" to
collapse. -
So the Fed effectively "nationalised" AIG - the
biggest rescue of a private firm in human history. -
And it's
only a few weeks, of course, since the even more expensive bail-out
of quasi-government lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - which,
between them, account for a mind-boggling $5,300bn of mortgages,
around half of America's home loans. -
On top of all that, US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson sent an
$800bn financial rescue plan to Congress. He wants to create a
second "Resolution Trust Corporation" - or
government-owned asset management company - -
to take on illiquid
mortgage-related debts. The original RTC was established to rescue
the US Savings and Loans Associations that went bust in the 1980s. -
And by the way, the Fed has also just offered another $125bn of
liquidity to banks outside the US that are desperate for dollars and
can't access America's frozen credit markets - a move
co-ordinated with central banks in Japan, the Eurozone, Switzerland,
Canada and here in the UK. -
The combination of these measures - each of them of enormous
significance in its own right - sent stock markets shooting-up on
Friday. -
America's S&P 500 rose 4.03 per cent and
London's FTSE 100 soared 8.84 per cent, its largest one-day
rise ever. -
But, despite the end-of-week euphoria and trader-talk
that "the only way is up", despite America's
undoubted resolve and Paulson's determination to do
"whatever it takes", the situation remains very fragile. -
Nothing better reflects the amount of fear among banks in America
- banks everywhere - than the sky-high rates they're continuing
to charge when lending to each other. -
Ordinarily, inter-bank (or
Libor) interest rates are only slightly above base rates. But with
so much uncertainty remaining about the scale and occurrence of
"sub-prime" - and with desperate bank executives still so
reluctant to "fess-up" their losses - the US Libor rate on
money to be paid back in three months is now a staggering 1.5 per
cent above base. In recent weeks, Libor rates have shot up in other
countries too. -
Paulson's latest liquidity injection has lowered over-night
Libor rates for now. But, despite the torrent of cash the US has
directed at the credit markets, longer-term inter-bank rates have
stayed stubbornly high, and some have gone up further. -
In other
words, even the banks themselves don't think the rescue plan
will work. -
Expect more - and bigger - liquidity operations in weeks
to come. -
The trouble is, though, as the bill for these bail-outs keeps
rising, so does the possibility that the political consensus will
crack and there'll be an almighty, and debilitating, dust-up. -
Paulson's RTC plan, in theory, could restore confidence. By
taking sub-prime loans off banks' books, it could de-ice the
inter-bank market, restoring credit lines to households and firms
and preventing the "credit crunch" from shifting
wholesale, in that fabled phrase, "from Wall Street to Main Street".

Add Sticky NoteA website created by the Church claims that the event, which is based on a
pagan celebration and has no Biblical basis, represents "light coming
in the darkness" similar to the arrival on Earth of Jesus Christ.- These nut jobs of the Anglican persuasion wouldn't know the one true God if He hit them right between their eyes! I know: my Brother is an Anglican priest! - on 2008-09-18
-
It is part of a campaign by clergy to stop the spread of the secular American
interpretation of Hallowe'en that sees children dress in horror masks and
demand "trick or treat" from neighbours, and revive its Christian
meaning of a commemoration of saints. -
However critics claimed it is "odd" for the Church to be equating
the two festivals. -
Rod Thomas, chairman of the traditionalist group Reform, said: "We have
to remember that Hallowe'en has only recently taken off in this country.
It's a bit of an American import so to put in on a par with Christmas Eve is
overplaying it. -
"To equate the coming of Christ with a celebration of His followers, the
saints, is an unequal comparison." -
However he added: "I think their motivation is exactly right, they're
trying to restore a bit of sanity to an area that's got out of hand." -
Alison Ruoff, a prominent member of the church's governing body, the General
Synod, added: "Making something positive of Hallowe'en is a good idea
but it's just a rather odd way of putting it. It needs to be spelled out." -
The roots of Hallowe'en date back almost 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of
Samhain, which marked the gathering of the harvest and the start of a new
year. -
On October 31, the last night of the old year, pagans believed the dead walked
the Earth once more and they would light bonfires and don masks to scare
their spirits away. -
In the 8th century AD, Pope Gregory IV moved the date of the Christian
festival of All Saints' Day to November 1, to coincide with Samhain. The
night before became known as All Hallows' Eve in the Christian calendar. -
Across Britain and Ireland the lighting of bonfires persisted, however, as
well as the pagan tradition of carving faces into lanterns to drive away
spirits who were still believed to rise again at this time of year. -
In recent years, the Church of England has become increasingly concerned about
children following the practices of American children on Hallowe'en, who
wear "gruesome" fancy dress and go from door to door playing
practical jokes on those who do not reward them with sweets. -
Last year the Bishop of Bolton, the Rt Rev David Gillett, said the night was
being used by yobs as an excuse for bad behaviour and was becoming the "anti-social
night of the year". -
He urged people to donate money to children's charities instead of
trick-or-treaters, and said supermarkets should stock more positive fancy
dress costumes alongside horror masks. -
This year the website Hallowe'en Choice, run by the Church and the Children's
Society, is running a poll to find out what children believe is Britain's "most
heroic job". -
The church wants people to mark All Saints' Day as "a celebration of
heroes and saints and the ultimate triumph of good over evil". -
Its website states: "No one can deny that the timing of 'All Hallows'
Eve' has pre-Christian pagan roots.
"Today, with millions of Christians celebrating Hallowe'en or 'All
Hallows' Eve', it is helpful to see Christmas Eve and Hallowe'en as doing
similar jobs: they are times of special celebration when light comes in the
darkness." -
The church today sought to clarify its position on Hallowe'en.
-
A CofE spokesman said the website now states: "Whilst no-one can deny that
Halloween has pre-Christian roots, and that the original pagan event was
assumed by the spread of Christianity, the fact is that since the eighth
century All Saints’ Day has fallen on 1st November and the word ‘Halloween’
derives from the term ‘All Hallows’ Eve’. -
"Few would argue that Easter or Christmas, which similarly assumed old pagan
festivals, should predominantly be celebrated as a pagan celebration in the
UK today and marketed by retailers as such. -
"We believe that Halloween has the power to trivialise evil and can be
portrayed as celebrating the triumph of evil over good – when in fact, as
Christians, we hold that the opposite is true and that, in Christ, good
conquers evil."

More than 400 people were evacuated from their homes in Morpeth,
Northumberland, as the town was “virtually cut off” when the River Wansbeck
burst its banks, causing the worst flooding since the 1960s. -
The situation was so serious that an RAF helicopter was called in to help
pluck several stranded residents to safety. - 10 more annotations...

-
At the height of the floods, Morpeth High Street was under 2ft of water, but
Northumberland County Council member Andrew Tebbutt said the situation has
“eased considerably” overnight. Residents spent the night at two
rescue centres located in the north and the south of the town. -
Councillor Tebbutt, who is jointly in charge of emergency planning, said:
“Fortunately it is not raining at the moment as it did most of the night. If
we get torrential rain again like we did yesterday then it will re-flood
very quickly, the ground is saturated.” -
He said around 1,000 homes were affected by the flooding and around 400 people
were evacuated. -
“There were a considerable number of people who self-evacuated so the number
will be higher,” he added. -
The British Red Cross said many of the people evacuated from their homes in
Morpeth were elderly and were “traumatised” by the experience. -
Judy Evans, operations director for the North East and Cumbria, said the
organisation was asked to help the emergency services, who had been unable
to cope with the number of calls. -
“The flood waters rose so quickly that we were not able to help with that
evacuation because we couldn’t get the vehicles in," she said. -
“It is very difficult when your house is being flooded and you are quite
elderly so people needed help readjusting to that situation.” -
Topsy Clinch, 91, completed repairs to her cottage in Pickering just a month
ago, after being flooded in June last year. She spent yesterday trying to
move her furniture upstairs. -
“I have been flooded five times since I moved here in 1975, and this will be
the sixth,” said Mrs Clinch. “It is chaos but it won’t get the better of me.”

The Environment Agency is warning water levels could continue to rise after
six people were left dead and hundreds forced from their homes by autumnal
storms. -
The North East is the region most seriously hit by the weather, although flash
floods have also hit parts of Yorkshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and
Worcestershire. -
Forecasters have predicted the rain will continue to fall in
parts of Britain, especially the east coast, but said it would consist of
random showers rather than the persistent rain of recent days. -

In Stroud, Gloucestershire, emergency services had to battle to recover the
body of a workman killed in a mud-slide after a trench collapsed in
torrential rain. -
The 27-year-old, from nearby Cheltenham, was buried under
the mud and police declared him dead at the scene. -
A 17-year-old girl from Thamesmead, in London, died when the 4x4 vehicle she
was in overturned and plunged into a swollen river in Powys, mid-Wales, on
Friday evening. -
The Land Rover Discovery was part of a convoy of off-road enthusiasts
attempting to cross a ford near the Llyn Brianne reservoir, but it was swept
downstream by flood water. -
The group could not get a mobile phone signal because of the remoteness of the
area, so one of the party had to drive for 30 minutes before finding help at
a farmhouse. -
The girl was airlifted to Bronglais hospital, in Aberystwyth, but died shortly
after arriving. The other people in the Land Rover were treated for
hypothermia. -
In the northeast, a 42-year-old motorcyclist from Sheffield died after hitting
a tree branch on the A66 near Darlington. -
The weather was also blamed for causing a car accident in which a young couple
were killed. Barry Rowe, 29, and Rebecca Hoynes, 30, died after their Subaru
estate hit a grass bank and careered off the road in Plymouth, Devon, in
heavy rain on Friday. -
And North Yorkshire Police said a motorcyclist was killed when he was in
collision with a fire engine responding to an emergency call near the
village of Wilton, on the A170 between Scarborough and Pickering. -
Earlier in
the day fire crews from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service had been
pumping out homes in the Pickering area after the local beck burst its
banks.
