The latest trends in education tell us to mirror in the class the changes occurring in the information age, to move from rote memorization to understanding process, to teach problem-solving rather than following directions, to merge theory and real-world applications, to shift from teacher-centred classrooms to student-centred ones.

Teachers are instructed to create a curriculum that is process-driven rather than content-driven; we must move away from teacher-dependent to student-empowered. We need to give students real-world problems using real-world tools. We are told that students must own their own learning and teachers must progressively withdraw to make students self-reliant.
