Web 2.0 Smackdown
Edubloggercon 2009 at NECC
Great Web 2.0 links that will be shared (and were shared last year) from the Web 2.0 smackdown. This is a speed sharing session where people are given 3 minutes to come and share their information. The bookmarks will be fed to this link. This is where the links go!
Web 2 Smackdown Warmup
Warming Up
One of my favorite web 2.0 tools shown last year at necc wasn't on a computer, it was a keychain used by Kevin Honeycutt. These are amazing and this is a photograph of that. These were given to the teacher at his school in sort of a swap meet - people wrote about what it was and links on one side and the name on the other side along with the name of a person who could be contacted to help with that. Each teacher had to bring two to share with the others.
Get in line to demo your favorite Web 2.0 tool. -- come to the front.
Each person has 3 minutes to present (thus the buddy to set up while you talk.) - You ONLY have 3 minutes - then, you'll be asked to stop!
Warmup
I really like Webslides and Lists on Diigo as well as Classroom groups (which let you add kids younger than Coppa minimum age.)
I am using this feature at NECC quite a bit - you can turn bookmarks into webslides. It is very useful and helpful!
This is the student blog where they share how to use various tools. We love reactiongrid and used it quite a bit this year as a great alternative to Second Life.
Where my students collaborate in a virtual world - like Second life although much more flexible in my opinion. Based on OpenSim.
You can use this tool to schedule tweets to go to your class twitter account. For example, set up an assignment and go ahead and schedule the tweets that go there.
If you're on slideshare and want to share your NECC 2009 presentations, just add them to this event group! Event groups are cool ways to share slides.
Basic Backchannel chat room netiquette. I use this generic slideshow to share and teach about backchannel.
So, your itunes library is way too big!!! Move it to an external harddrive. This is how!! Then you can sync from multiple computers (just put a copy of the library on both computers) -- really really cool.
Add sound effects and morph your video using rifftrax. So, this is how you can take things and remix and re-embed. There are some obvious reasons when you go to the site that I would ONLY use this for college level and above.
This is a great presentation and Kevin did a great job presenting. He concluded the smackdown. Great offline tool to help teachers understand and keep up with innovations.
A lot of people like this for doing collaborative wikis.
Great summary of some of the coolest tools shared at edubloggercon and the smackdown - I have to compile my notes, but here are some GREAT ones!
The ustream for the Web 2 smackdown and a list of links from the session on a wiki page. Some people don't like the term "smackdown" which originated from wrestling (guess it shows my southern roots) -- just meant to be a lot of fun and sharing - not supposed to be too serious.
Lots of great tools shared here. The ustream is great if you have time, if you don't, there are quite a few links in the diigo list I share here.
