  • Gay and lesbian theory was thus faced with three significant problems, all of which involved difficulties with the notion of ‘identity.’ Queer theory arose in large part as an attempt to overcome them. How queer theory does so can be seen by looking at the term ‘queer’ itself. In contrast to gay or lesbian, ‘queer,’ it is argued, does not refer to an essence, whether of a sexual nature or not. Instead it is purely relational, standing as an undefined term that gets its meaning precisely by being that which is outside of the norm, however that norm itself may be defined. As one of the most articulate queer theorists puts it: “Queer is … whatever is at odds with the normal, the legitimate, the dominant. There is nothing in particular to which it necessarily refers. It is an identity without an essence” (Halperin, 1995, 62, original emphasis).

FreeMyPDF.com - Removes passwords from viewable PDFs

"Use this site to remove passwords and restrictions (such as printing, copying text, etc.) from PDFs.
Note: This only works for PDFs that you can open and read without any 3rd party plugins. PDFs that require a password to be viewed cannot be unlocked by this service. This is because this is not cracking. Viewable PDFs with restrictions are not really protected, no more than a door with a broken lock, as opposed to password-protected PDFs.

List of Error-Prone Abbreviations | Institute For Safe Medication Practices

"The ISMP List of Error-Prone Abbreviations, Symbols, and Dose Designations contains abbreviations, symbols, and dose designations which have been reported through the ISMP National Medication Errors Reporting Program (ISMP MERP) and have been misinterpreted and involved in harmful or potentially harmful medication errors. These abbreviations, symbols, and dose designations should NOT be used when communicating medical information verbally, electronically, and/or in handwritten applications. This includes internal communications; verbal, handwritten, or electronic prescriptions; handwritten and computer-generated medication labels; drug storage bin labels; medication administration records; and screens associated with pharmacy and prescriber computer order entry systems, automated dispensing cabinets, smart infusion pumps, and other medication-related technologies.

In the Table, error-prone abbreviations, symbols, and dose designations that are included on The Joint Commission’s “Do Not Use” list (Information Management standard IM.02.02.01) are identified with a double asterisk (**) and must be included on an organization’s “Do Not Use” list. Error-prone abbreviations, symbols, and dose designations that are relevant mostly in handwritten communications of medication information are highlighted with a dagger (†).

OpenMD Medical Dictionary

OpenMD is a medical reference service that makes high-quality medical information easily accessible to everyone. OpenMD.com searches billions of documents from government agencies, global health organizations, medical journals, and reference sites.

Our approach increases the visibility of medical information from reputable sources, which can often be obscured amid a muddle of commercial results and user-generated content.

Subscription paywalls are commonplace in professional medical reference. We recognize that unexpectedly running into those walls can be a headache. So OpenMD's search prioritizes freely-accessible content whenever available.

OpenMD has also compiled a directory of trusted medical information sources. We believe this expert-reviewed directory to be the most comprehensive index of credible medical sites anywhere on the internet.

Site features:

Health Search Engine
Search across billions of documents from reputable sources.
Health Site Directory
Directory of over 850 credible health information sites.
Medical Dictionary
Definitions for 12,500 terms and 6,000 abbreviations.
Health Research Guides

Academic Phrasebank | The University of Manchester

"The Academic Phrasebank is a general resource for academic writers. It aims to provide you with examples of some of the phraseological ‘nuts and bolts’ of writing organised according to the main sections of a research paper or dissertation (see the top menu ). Other phrases are listed under the more general communicative functions of academic writing (see the menu on the left). The resource should be particularly useful for writers who need to report their research work. The phrases, and the headings under which they are listed, can be used simply to assist you in thinking about the content and organisation of your own writing, or the phrases can be incorporated into your writing where this is appropriate. In most cases, a certain amount of creativity and adaptation will be necessary when a phrase is used. The items in the Academic Phrasebank are mostly content neutral and generic in nature; in using them, therefore, you are not stealing other people’s ideas and this does not constitute plagiarism. For some of the entries, specific content words have been included for illustrative purposes, and these should be substituted when the phrases are used. The resource was designed primarily for academic and scientific writers who are non-native speakers of English. However, native speaker writers may still find much of the material helpful. In fact, recent data suggest that the majority of users are native speakers of English."
