Western criticism of Uzbekistan for its bloody crackdown against antigovernment protesters in Andijon last May has reached a peak, with the European Union imposing an arms embargo and banning entry to top Uzbek officials. The move coincided with yesterday's sentencing of 15 men to up to 20 years in jail for terrorism, religious extremism, and anti-constitutional activity in connection with the uprising. The United States also rejected the verdicts as unfair and said the trial was not credible.

The United States has called for a fair and speedy trial for Ugandan opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye which does not affect elections due early next year. IIt says it is "deeply concerned" about his arrest and regrets the two days of riots in the capital that followed.

The killings have led to protests by Ethiopians around the world. More than 3,000 people arrested in election protests in Ethiopia earlier this month have been released, state media reports. Some 8,000 people have now been freed since the protests organized by the opposition, claiming that May's elections were rigged.

Egypt's largest Islamic opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, has doubled the number of seats its members will hold in Parliament, the state-run Middle East News Agency and members of the group said Wednesday, based on preliminary reports of vote totals from a runoff election on Tuesday.
