"Although central to the business of higher education, the LMS has also become a symbol of the status quo that supports administrative functions more effectively than teaching and learning activities."
Technology Selection and Adoption
Today, most students own a computer, use multifunction mobile technologies, have ubiquitous access to the Internet, regularly use course management systems for coursework, and incessantly IM and text-message (e-mail is passé).
It is not surprising that today's learner brings more advanced skills and higher expectations to the college/university learning environment.
We understand that, somehow, learning can be distributed, that active learning is now easier to manage, that social learning has become a fact of life, that authentic learning opportunities are all around us, that information is all around us, that archiving and examining student work produces a whole new harvest of learning--we understand all this and we understand “high-impact learning practices,” but we have yet to put it all together.
Open Education
Over the past few years, we've seen a growing interest in electronic educational resources and a move toward digital textbooks as a way to help a financially distressed higher education. During this webinar, we'll discuss why textbook costs have skyrocketed; how textbook costs impact students, faculty, and institutions; and current initiatives by the University System of Ohio to address textbook affordability and learning outcomes. We'll also discuss what defines open educational resources and open textbooks and how they can reduce costs by up to 80 percent while increasing quality and accessibility.
Keynote from David Wiley at the 2011 EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative conference in Washington D.C. The first part addresses copyright and openness, the second part is on learning analytics.
Tools and Techniques
"If you are considering which tool to use for your next presentation, it might be helpful to see how the features of these two compare. What are the key differences? The chart below may help; my goal was to be objective and thorough, yet compact."
Dr. Rankin, professor of History at UT Dallas, wanted to know how to reach more students and involve more people in class discussions both in and out of the classroom. She had heard of Twitter... She collaborated with the UT Dallas, Arts and Technology - Emerging Media and Communications (EMAC) http://www.emac.utdallas.edu faculty and as a Graduate student in EMAC I assisted her in her experiment.
Report on the use of wikis in education and at UD, in preparation of the deployment of Sakai, which includes a wiki tool.
"As college students, we survive by collaborating. We work together on group projects, form study groups, and share advice about the toughest professors. Despite all this, it occurred to me that nobody really works together to take notes."
While the value of this type of statisitical information can be questioned, especially when considering the place of social media within a business structure, I think it serves to highlight simply how massive the channel is as a whole.
"This thinking has us moving away from the traditional LMS. In a February 2008 Campus Technology interview, Gary Brown introduced the term “harvesting gradebook” to describe the gradebook that faculty need to work in these decentralized environments. As originally articulated by Gary, the gradebook “harvested” student work, storing copies of the work within itself where it was assessed."
"The term personal learning environment (PLE) describes the tools, communities, and services that constitute the individual educational platforms that learners use to direct their own learning and pursue educational goals. PLEs represent a shift away from the model in which students consume information through independent channels such as the library, a textbook, or an LMS, moving instead to a model where students draw connections from a growing matrix of resources that they select and organize. The use of PLEs may herald a greater emphasis on the role that metacognition plays in learning, enabling students to actively consider and reflect upon the specific tools and resources that lead to a deeper engagement with content to facilitate their learning."

"ClassOwl launched this week and has 750 members, according to Sam Purtill, its founder, who is a sophomore majoring in philosophy. The site allows students to “follow” their classes and input class assignments and due dates, which then trigger notifications as deadlines near."
