  • It is a pretty big and ambitious project created by Joe frimage, Cutler Cleveland, and Peter Saundry. Basically the Digital Universe is still being creted, it is in its beginig stages. It aims to become the "largest reliable public information resource in history." They basically want to become the PBS of the internet. It will feature many different subjects, from Technology to music. The way the information will be aded is that top academics in thier field will be paid to write articles and gather links to other web-sites that are accurate and reputable that will be put into the approriate "portal". There are different portals for differnt subjects, like the one that is being 'constructed' right now called "Earth". These broadly named portals are made up of smaller portals that build-up the bigger one, like one part of the Earth portal is 'the environment'. The academics who write for and contribute information to these portals are called "stewards". The inforamtion is either an original articles or inforamtion that has been peer-reviewed and validated.Much of the content in the Digital Universe will be free, but "premium" content will cost money to subscribe to. Ther eis also a Digital Universe Foundation that is a non-profit group that will help guide the development of this project. Also, a free online journal will be created to discuss issues of the Digital Universe.   I think that this is a really interesting idea, and it is always great to see people trying to harness the power the internet can have and being responsible with the information they can spread. The goal of the DigitalUniverse is to expose people to the right information, or accurate inforamtion, in certain subjects, and to allow this information to be accessed and read by people who may not be experts in the subject. This way people can be educated on certain subjects without worrying that maybe the information is not reputable.  Â
