- a sense of aesthetic beauty or style (e.g. hard edges are the default QR output, but rounded edges and corners are inherently more attractive to most peoples eyes),
- a degree of brand consistency (e.g. a company like happy snappy cola with a large investment in its red cola can and branding/logo would presumably try to create linkage by adding red elements to their QR),
- and/or a sense of context. Context helps the potential consumer of the code try to get a sense of what they will see in return for scanning the code.
A styled QR code has been modified using any number of techniques to provide one or all of three things:

A QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.
Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the initialism of Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.
