How to create a high-impact digital employee experience (DEX) strategy

"When digital employee experience gains traction within firms, the need for a meaningful DEX strategy quickly becomes apparent. This strategy points towards a desired future state, and then puts in place plans and actions to make it a reality.

"

  • In our last global DEX survey, 42% of respondents rated digital employee experience either very or extremely important. As the working world has taken a sudden shift to digital and remote practices, this figure is no doubt higher still.

The Enshittification of Everything, Everywhere, All at Once

"The pending enshittification of AI is going to cost us. The price? It depends on how much of our humanity we outsource to the rob"

  • Ultimately, what has really broken me is not any of the above individually but instead the enshittification of everything, everywhere, all at once.
  • en·shit·ti·fi·ca·tion (noun) 1

    /en-ˌshit-ə-fɪ-ˈkā-shən/

An informal word used to criticize the degradation in the quality and experience of online platforms over time, due to an increase in advertisements, costs, or features. It can also refer more generally to any state of deterioration, especially in politics or society. Similar forms include enshittify and enshittified.

Should we really treat AI agents like employees?

"Should we treat AI agents as fellow employees? No.

How’s that for clarity? I do wonder how those who claim we should actually think about how human employees should be treated."

  • It is easy to think of all the ways in which advice advocating for equal treatment of humans and agents is not right: Don’t expect the AI agent embedded in your marketing workflow to buy Girl Scout cookies. They aren’t going to care if you forget their birthday. They aren’t going to bet on the March Madness pool
  • Even the analogy is weak, but let’s think if any aspects of it sound right.

Waste at the Speed of AI

"The problem, as he puts it, is that AI lets you skip the hardest part of work: deciding what's worth doing in the first place."

  • He calls it "performative productivity" - that feeling at the end of a busy AI-assisted day where you've shipped a new landing page, rewrote the sales deck, drafted a content calendar, and fixed the email sequence, yet somehow can't name one thing that actually moved you forward.
  • it's a problem we dealt with constantly in manufacturing, and we have a name for it.

(1) Your change methodology wasn't built for this world

"When traditional change methods are not simply failing. They're pointing you and your organization towards the polar opposite of what AI-era digital transformation requires."

  • Linear change methodologies were designed for a world of bounded, internally-driven organisational shifts: restructuring a division, rolling out a new process, merging two cultures.

Oxford Researcher Warns That AI Is Heading for a Hindenburg-Style Disaster

"“The Hindenburg disaster destroyed global interest in airships; it was a dead technology from that point on, and a similar moment is a real risk for AI,” Michael Wooldridge, a professor of AI at Oxford University, told The Guardian."

  • All those ambitions were vaporized, however, when the ship suddenly burst into flames as it attempted a landing in New Jersey. The horrific fireball was attributed to a critical flaw: the hundreds of thousands of pounds of hydrogen it was filled with were ignited by an unfortunate spark.
  • You’ve got a technology that’s very, very promising, but not as rigorously tested as you would like it to be, and the commercial pressure behind it is unbearable.”

When Every Company Can Use the Same AI Models, Context Becomes a Competitive Advantage

" When everyone has access to the same AI models, the same AI-enabled tools, and the same vendor ecosystem, organizational context becomes the differentiator. Context is demonstrated execution: the workflows teams actually follow across systems, the signals they respond to, the order in which roles get involved, the exceptions that trigger action, and the judgment calls that repeat across real work. These patterns are visible only in execution, not in stated process. Leaders need to understand why context has become a decisive source of competitive advantage, and how they can capture and operationalize it"
