Adapting to the future: the use of AI tools and applications in university education and a call for transparent rules and guidelines | International Journal for Educational Integrity | Full Text

"The article examines the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and their applications in Czech university education in relation to ethical behavior. In the theoretical section, we define artificial intelligence in education and provide an overview of its use and the related ethical challenges. We also describe the national context and initiatives active during the research period. The paper presents students’ knowledge of and perceptions regarding rules, guidelines, and regulations related to AI usage in the university environment, explored through an anonymous online questionnaire distributed among Czech university students in December 2023. The results show that ChatGPT, including its paid version and translation tools, has been popular among students. Perceptions of unethical behavior connected with AI use varied. Students emphasized the need for clearly defined rules and guidelines and concrete case descriptions that they can easily interpret."

ARL/CNI AI Scenarios: AI-Influenced Futures

"The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) have chosen to apply scenario planning to imagine a future influenced by artificial intelligence (AI) and to explore the range of uncertainty associated with AI in the research and knowledge ecosystem. The scenarios were developed through a highly consultative process leveraging the expertise of the ARL/CNI Joint Task Force on Scenario Planning for AI/ML Futures and the ARL and CNI communities and facilitated by Stratus, Inc. The strategic focus and critical uncertainties highlighted in the scenarios were identified through extensive stakeholder engagement with the ARL and CNI membership during the winter of 2023–24 and spring of 2024 and involved over 300 people. Input was provided through focus groups, workshops, and one-on-one interviews.

ARL and CNI have published the Deluxe Edition of the ARL/CNI AI Scenarios: AI-Influenced Futures. This publication is a critical asset for research libraries and organizations aiming to strategically plan for the transformative power of artificial intelligence."

1EdTech Launches K-20 Collaboration to Shape Responsible AI in Education

"The 1EdTech Consortium recently announced plans to lead a cross-sector collaboration "to define how AI can responsibly and effectively support teaching and learning." The organization will work with ed tech companies, institutions, and other thought leaders to develop a shared, open framework to providing educational context to AI models, according to a news release.

Building on the Model Context Protocol, the open source standard introduced by Anthropic to standardize the way AI applications integrate and share data with external systems, the collaboration will work to help AI systems better understand the structure and standards that define teaching and learning, 1EdTech explained. "By embedding trusted educational context into AI tools, the work aims to improve the relevance and reliability of AI-generated results while protecting sensitive information about learners and educators.""
