SearchGPT: The Fast Fashion of Information

SearchGPT will likely destroy many of the dozens of bespoke AI wrapper apps, but it won’t replace Google search and I doubt that Wikipedia should be fearful. Google’s own foray into generative search has been met with scathing criticism. It’s inaccurate and often creates an aggregate summary that makes searching for simple answers a murky exercise, when all a user wants is clarity.

Augmented Course Design: Using AI to Boost Efficiency and Expand Capacity

"Using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or CoPilot as intelligent assistants in instructional design can significantly enhance the scalability of course development. GenAI can significantly improve the efficiency with which institutions develop content that is closely aligned with the curriculum and course objectives. As a result, institutions can more effectively meet the rising demand for flexible and high-quality education, preparing a new generation of future professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to excel in their chosen fields.Footnote1 In this article, we illustrate the uses of AI in instructional design in terms of content creation, media development, and faculty support. We also provide some suggestions on the effective and ethical uses of AI in course design and development. Our perspectives are rooted in medical education, but the principles can be applied to any learning context."

ChatGPT is bullshit

"Recently, there has been considerable interest in large language models: machine learning systems which produce human-like text and dialogue. Applications of these systems have been plagued by persistent inaccuracies in their output; these are often called “AI hallucinations”. We argue that these falsehoods, and the overall activity of large language models, is better understood as bullshit in the sense explored by Frankfurt (On Bullshit, Princeton, 2005): the models are in an important way indifferent to the truth of their outputs. We distinguish two ways in which the models can be said to be bullshitters, and argue that they clearly meet at least one of these definitions. We further argue that describing AI misrepresentations as bullshit is both a more useful and more accurate way of predicting and discussing the behaviour of these systems."

New principles on use of AI in education

"The five principles set out in today’s joint statement are:

Universities will support students and staff to become AI-literate.
Staff should be equipped to support students to use generative AI tools effectively and appropriately in their learning experience.
Universities will adapt teaching and assessment to incorporate the ethical use of generative AI and support equal access.
Universities will ensure academic rigour and integrity is upheld.
Universities will work collaboratively to share best practice as the technology and its application in education evolves."
