Software analyzes SUNY network data during RIAA crackdown

"In 2007, Coloccia attended a Cisco networker’s conference. While exploring, Coloccia stumbled upon the Plixer International booth, where the company offered a free trial license for its Scrutinizer NetFlow Analyzer product to higher education customers. “No other vendors were doing anything remotely close; it just seemed like a perfect fit,” said Coloccia. “By getting my hands dirty with the software before we made a commitment to it, it would be easier for me to justify spending budget money on it.” With the new software collecting, archiving and reporting data, Coloccia found that it was much easier to monitor and understand data flows to and from student computers located in dorm rooms."

Network traffic monitoring and analysis with NetFlow and sFlow

"Captures Cisco NetFlow, sFlow and other flow technologies and uses that data to monitor the overall network health. Check out the Activate NetFlow page. Reports on which hosts, applications, protocols, etc. that are consuming network bandwidth. Custom NetFlow Reports allow you to filter (include/exclude) in on exactly the information you need. They can be saved and run again later."

NetFlow version 9 - Cisco Systems

"Cisco IOS NetFlow efficiently provides a key set of services for IP applications, including network traffic accounting, usage-based network billing, network planning, security, Denial of Service monitoring capabilities, and network monitoring. NetFlow provides valuable information about network users and applications, peak usage times, and traffic routing. Cisco invented NetFlow and is the leader in IP traffic flow technology. The basic output of NetFlow is a flow record. Several different formats for flow records have evolved as NetFlow has matured. The most recent evolution of the NetFlow flow-record format is known as NetFlow version 9. The distinguishing feature of the NetFlow Version 9 format, which is the basis for an IETF standard, is that it is template-based. Templates provide an extensible design to the record format, a feature that should allow future enhancements to NetFlow services without requiring concurrent changes to the basic flow-record format."

Section 508: 508 Law

"In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Inaccessible technology interferes with an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily. Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. ‘ 794d), agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others. It is recommended that you review the laws and regulations listed below to further your understanding about Section 508 and how you can support implementation. "

Individual focus and knowledge contribution

Before contributing new knowledge, individuals must attain requisite background knowledge or skills through schooling, training, practice, and experience. Given limited time, individuals often choose either to focus on few areas, where they build deep expertise, or to delve less deeply and distribute their attention and efforts across several areas. In this paper we measure the relationship between the narrowness of focus and the quality of contribution across a range of both traditional and recent knowledge sharing media, including scholarly articles, patents, Wikipedia, and online question and answer forums. Across all systems, we observe a small but significant positive correlation between focus and quality.
