Significant investments have been made to protect and, in some instances restore stream beds, banks, in-channel habitat features and riparian plant communities. Too often the investment was diminished or lost when out-of channel activities or occurrences degraded or destroyed the habitats and/or the fish using them.

The Yukon Salmon Sub-Committee (YSSC), a non-government, public advisory body established under the Umbrella Final Agreement (UFA), provides formal recommendations directly to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and to First Nations on all matters related to salmon and their habitat.

The Yukon River Panel (YRP) makes recommendations to management entities on in both sides of the US/Canada border concerning the conservation and management of salmon originating in Canada. Unlike other regional panels and committees established under the Pacific Salmon Treaty, the Yukon River Panel follows its own internal procedures and does not report to the Pacific Salmon Commission—the body formed by U.S. and Canadian governments to implement the PST.
