Architect Studio 3D, from the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust
As a math and communication arts activity/lesson I have my students design a home with the help of Frank Lloyd Wright! Architect Studio 3D is an interactive site which allows the student to select a client, location, floor plan, and more. The students keep a Journal, in Word, as we work through the project. They are to log all decisions and give reasons for the decisions. They design the home of their client’s dream including all interior and exterior finishes, and furnishings. The house can be displayed as a floor plan, or three dimensional. Using the arrows on the keyboard students can move through the house and it’s location: a virtual tour. They save the house to “share” using a pseudonym and also print the floor plan. We make two copies of the plans; one for the bulletin board, and one for a class book. We also scan the plans to save in their Journals. When the houses are completed, we open the saved projects and share them first using the SMART Board. The students take us on a guided tour, explaining their work. I usually have the students create a rubric for the final project as a class using the guidelines from the site. I have rubrics created for various stages, and components. For instance they are graded weekly on their Journals; there will be grades for the math components, a grade for the final presentation, and a grade for the final project. Some years I have the students create a budget using Excel, which is a separate grade as well.through it in 3D, and then share it with the world. You can also learn more about architecture, past and present, and explore Frank Lloyd Wright's life and work.

TinkerPlots is a software construction set of basic operations (stack, order, separate) that allows students to build their own plots to analyze data.
TinkerPlots is especially useful for mathematics teachers striving to teach students data analysis in line with recommendations of the NCTM's Curriculum Standards, and to inquiry-based science classrooms where students collect and analyze data as part of formulating and testing their own hypotheses
