More Cool Tools: Comiqs and Jumpcut at A History Teacher
For this project students had to first read a number of poems written by World War I soldiers and select one. Next they reviewed hundreds of images from WWI from a list of image sites I provided them. They were specifically looking for visuals that connected to the imagery described in their poem. Once they had their images, they set up an account at Jumpcut.com (owned by Yahoo so you need a Yahoo login). Then they could import their photos and add their poem to the images.

Comics.com Home Page
My students used this tool to summarize their understanding of the events of the French Revolution. I provided links to a number of French Revolution-related images and gave them a basic tutorial of the tool (which I had played with for about 20 minutes before giving the demo). From there the students put together short comic books, complete with voice bubbles and other text.

WordWorld | PBS KIDS
This is a great site to used with kindergarten and first grade students at the beginning of the school year. Word World would be a fun one to use as a whole class on a projector or interactive whiteboard. It is also simple enough for students to play individually as a center or in a computer lab setting. For struggling readers, this is a really wonderful place for some one on one therapy.

If you have an interactive whiteboard (or even just a projector) students can study cards as a whole class. You could easily use Knowtes for a whole class study session/game.

Ipopetz.tv - Make fun show Send original greetings Record creative clip
Because they can record their own voice and manipulate their puppet, they display their knowledge in a new and fun way as well as become the directors for their own 3-D cartoon. So much fun! Have students create shows about any subject. For example, students could create a show about a current science topic. Instead of studying from a text book before a test, students can watch eachother’s informational cartoon shows.

Create a free website | Free Myspace layouts | Flash Myspace layouts
Wix is the perfect tool to use to create a classroom website for your students. Post classroom rules, homework assignments, links for your students, units you are working on, school information, parent newsletters, etc. Wix is also a great place for your students to create a website. They will go nuts with this (trust me!), Wix is one of those assignments they will continue to work on at home without being asked! Could be used to personalize a Myspace profile. nstead of having students display knowledge of a subject in traditional ways, invite them to create a website about it where they can be the classroom “expert” on the subject.

Simulated Life Games
My favorite microworld is in sociology. I have one copy of SimSocieties on my computer. Throughout last semester I had students create their own society. This allowed them to see and create a society in which they needed to know all of the elements of an successful society. The kids loved it. Once they finish their society and "run" it for a week, each group gets to present their society on the projector. I assess their work through their presentation. They have to explain what worked and what was unsuccessful, then they must explain why they chose to create their society the way that they did.
A multimedia assignment that I have is through blogs. Each week I post a psychology article on our blog site. The students must respond to the article, then each student must respond to at least one other students post. I assess each students articles and responses. This process is great because it allows me read the post before they are actually posted to the site. -

MySpace
I teach middle school students, and I am pretty sure that all middle school students are addicted to MySpace and Facebook. One way that I experimented in using this technology to my advantage in the classroom was to have my students create a Facebook or MySpace page for a historical figure. For instance, I had my students choose a historical figure that we had studied throughout the course of American History and create a page for that figure. They had to include songs, video clips, images and stories and poetry that would relate and connect with the historical figure that they chose. My students absolutely loved it because they were using technology that almost all of them were extremely familiar with. They also thought it was cool because it was like they were creating an alternate identity (even though it was a real historical figure's identity). I loved it because the results I saw were very well done, far superior to what I could have pulled off using Facebook or MySpace. The lesson for me was to try to use technology that the students are using...don't force new things on them all the time.

The BAE — Blood Alcohol Educator
The BAE is an interactive, educational program that is available in English and Spanish. Developed in conjunction with the University of Illinois, the Blood Alcohol Educator (BAE) educates the public about Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels and how alcohol affects you as an individual. By entering your gender, weight, and the number and type of drinks consumed, you can quickly learn how alcohol affects your BAC level in a safe and alcohol-free environment. The BAE program also shows information regarding your state laws for drinking and driving, the effects of alcohol at various BAE levels, how food impacts BAE levels and how alcohol affects friends differently.
