Kelley HallThis is a video recording of Billie Holiday singing "Strange Fruit." This is a song about lynchings in the south with the "strange fruit" being the black bodies hanging from the trees. Collins (p. 107, 2nd edition; 110-ish 3rd edition) uses this as an example of black women blues singers making political and social statements in their music. I was also reminded of the brief discussion of the swing-set murdered children depicted in the X-Men comic - same brutality, different imagery.

Vicki DavisThis video of Billie Holiday singing her most popular song, Strange Fruit about a lynching in the south is a powerful video to share with all students during Black History Month. This was 5 months before she died. On youtube.
