Those days are over, never to return.

The really crazy change is here: it's the fact that they are no longer disconnected from each other, the fact that former consumers are now producers, the fact that the audience can talk directly to one another; because there is a lot more amateurs than professionals, and because the size of the network, the complexity of the network is actually the square of the number of participants, meaning that the network, when it grows large, grows very, very large.

Jesse KarrAs I reread Gladwell's piece I found that I may garner more information knowing more about one of the key people Gladwell addresses, Clay Shirkey. I want to know more about the man Gladwell spends the most time and effort on in his article. From that point I investigated a TED talk Mr. Shirkey gave in 2009, discussing social media (hmm, seems relevent!). The point i'd like to highlight from the video is is 5:50 to about 10:30. Here Shirkey discusses an example of social media bringing unprecedented social change in a terribly repressed nation - China.

Public Stiky Notes
- These tools don't get socially interesting until they get technically boring.
- This generation is the largest increase in expressive capability in human history
- Media Revolutions > Printing Press(1400), telegraph/telephone(200 yrs ago). Recorded Media(150yrs ago), Radio(TV) (100yrs)
- The media that's good at creating groups is no good at creating conversations, and the media that's good at creating convos is not good at creating groups. (1 to many or many to 1)
- Internet media is first that integrates these two.
- As stuff gets digitized all media is carried via internet
- BBC got first announcement of China 7.2 quake via Twitter before Meteorology Society.
- Last 7+ quake it took China 3 months to admit it even happened
- Ex of China fighting to contain citizen journalism
- China shut off flow to Twitter for Tiananmen Square reunion because they couldn't filter the flow.
- The audience can talk back. They are full participates.
- Great graph of idea of "rally your ppl to each other around your brand, not rally ppl to your brand"
- Obama example of FISA (convine supports, not control)
- Media is less about crafting a single message
