Nicole GriffinEngage Students in Service Learning
Through Greg Mortenson’s best-selling Three Cups of Tea and the author’s Pennies for Peace organization, thousands of young people across the U.S. are inspired to raise money for new schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Pearson Foundation, in conjunction with Pennies for Peace and the National Education Association (NEA) Foundation, recently announced a new K–12 service-learning toolkit designed to help educators create effective penny-raising campaigns as part of their school’s curriculum. The Pennies for Peace Toolkit, available for free, provides a standards-aligned, service-learning curriculum for all grade levels, including classroom activities, fact sheets, maps provided by National Geographic and videos about life and culture in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The toolkit supplies campaign tools that teachers and students can use to engage their local communities, including letter templates to civic leaders, press release templates, stickers and flyers. -

Lee Ann SpillaneGreg Mortenson told an amazing story at ASCD in Orlando about the birth of this organization. He was looking for support to build schools in Afghanistan and a student at his mother's elementary schools said something along the lines of "Mr. Mortenson, I have a piggy bank at home. I think I can help." That school raised $62 K in pennies!

Sheryl A. McCoyWelcome to Pennies for Peace, a project of the non-profit Central Asia Institute (CAI). Your Pennies for Peace penny drive will spread the value of sharing among Americans and open a world of opportunity to schoolchildren in Pakistan and Afghanistan through education. A penny is nearly worthless in the United States, but a penny buys a pencil in Pakistan and Afghanistan and empowers a child to read and write.
