The Internet suggests a new map of the world, with borders redrawn along language lines. Over here — meaning here, in this article, in this newspaper, and for at least a light-year in every direction — we have the Anglosphere.
Here, people write in Internet English; they link to English-language sites; they cite English-language newspapers. In spite of panoramic ambitions, they are blind to non-Anglophone sites.
Anglosphere comprises the former British Empire (and even those places — the Netherlands, Germany, Iceland, Scandinavia — where people have uncanny skills with English as a second language).
the Japanese don’t care about the English language or American culture, not nearly as much as we pretend they do. And why should they?
