dsims2Natural Readers allows you to take any PDF or file format and covert the text found in them into sound files. It also reads along with the user as they navigate though these files. This resource would be helpful for students with accommodations as well as teachers who are looking to create audio books.

Julina NoceraNatural Reader is a website that converts written text into spoken language to be heard by the user. Written text can be written in a variety of different language and dialects. This tool can be used for a variety of different educational purposes. It acts as an indicator for spoken fluency and dialect in different languages. It could benefit English Language Learners by modeling fluent speech. Furthermore, it can provide ELL students with a spoken language alternative to written text. Spoken language may be more comprehensible to these students than written text. Additionally, this tool could be used for students to assess the fluency of their writing. A student could enter their written text and listen to the read aloud to determine if their writing makes sense. Natural Reader could be used in language classes to model dialect and accents of different languages as well as model proper dialect for spoken language in in these languages.

jennifergarganThis tool allows text to be read aloud to students. There are different voices to select from. Many still sound very "computer-based" and not necessarily natural. This may be difficult for some students. I also demoed the mac one on my home computer. I have used this before and like it. I enjoy audiobooks so this is not that different. I think it would be especially useful for students who need to research online but the text level is beyond their current reading level. On a personal level, we recently encountered this issue during animal research. I would like to use this tool in the future to help students with online research. I have briefly talked to our tech support and this seems like a possibility with our student devices!

arutled2This is site that I found after exploring Learning Ally. I was curious to hear some new synthesized voices and this was one of the sites that came up. There are quite a few different voices in different languages -- some that sound more natural than others. It is possible to convert any text to audio files - MP3 or WAV.

Amy RoubalDoes it work on a chromebook? I like that the reader can copy and paste what is read to them as well as the speed and type of person talking. Sometimes the TTS features end up sounding extremely robotic and end up being a distraction more than a help.

casousaA good TTS system that accurately converts text to speech. Although the cadence of the 'speakers' is somewhat choppy at times, the language is easily understood. This will be good for students who are more auditory learners, or need to hear text as they read it for better comprehension. Plus, the accents are fun to play with.

Douglas PlanteNaturalReaders is an interesting mashup of two technologies that have existed for quite a while: optical character recognition (OCR) which allows written text to be converted into digital text, and voice synthesis, which takes digital text and converts it into audio form, traditionally in a robotic monotone voice. What seems to set NaturalReaders apart is that they have combined these two functions together into one app, and created a cloud service which can provide the same functionality to a user across a variety of platforms (PC, Mac, tablet and mobile). The Windows-based software works as a floating button or widget that can be used to convert any on-screen text into speech, which could be invaluable to students branching out to another language (the software supports a variety of languages). The same license can also provide functions useful to teachers, such as batch file processing which could be used to prepare a large number of texts for individualized lessons. Imagine if you had a group of students having reading difficulty who worked best with auditory cues. With NaturalReaders, you could largely automate the process of converting a stack of printed texts into audio files which could be distributed to tablets or iPods. Other uses could include a single-app solution for converting notes on the classroom board into both digital text files and voice files for archiving and sharing. This means that a single license can provide functionality for teachers and students.
Additionally, the software integrates with a variety of online document storage systems such as Google and Dropbox, which could make it easier to integrate on a large scale across schools which already use such sharing services. There are even a variety of price points allowing teachers to experiment and see which functions they like, then only purchase as much as they need.
The promo video on the home page is a little bit snake-oil-ish: claims that it will "increase productivity" and "make you happier" are either tongue-in-cheek or else silly salesmanship. But I do have to admit that if I had a large number of students with needs for this kind of material, it might be worth the price to have all this functionality in a single app instead of multiple ones. -

kiangjNatural Readers is definitely something of great use, I really like it’s compatibility with multiple platforms and media formats. This would be great for implementing with my school as they provide 50% off for schools and a perfect combination with the Readability app as my “Online Search Tools” option.
One of the unique capabilities that impress me is the “OCR function” that allows users to select certain text from pictures and have Natural Readers voice read out the text accurately. This would be a great option for students that have scanned books or took pictures of text on their handhelds or phones. As there are multiple options for compatibility, it is great to know that this software can always be used to the convenience of students. The ability to scan any document and have it converted into audio files is also a great tool.
Great for Language learning courses like our ESL, French and Spanish subjects. It would be a plus if Mandarin Chinese would be added in a future patch or upgrade. Overall, great tool as many Language teachers use recordings and also have students listen to audio files.text-to-speech software audio speech tools texttospeech text

rachel119NaturalReader provides free text-to-speech software with natural sounding human voices, unlike computer generated Siri-type voices that many of us are used to on our tablets and smartphones. Students can listen to readings from PDF files, web pages, e-mails, and more in order to facilitate learning. This resource is especially effective for students who are not visual learners, and instead learn best when listening to material. It may be a much easier and more enjoyable experience to listen to a natural voice similar to that of an actual teacher, as opposed to a computer-generated voice.

I would use natural readers as a vocabulary enhancer for some students. Some words they may not be able to pronounce and this would be a great tool. Also when doing their wriitings, they could type this in the box and have it read to them to see if it sounds right to them and they could go back and make edits where they see fit. -

Kendra BaileyNaturalReader is a free text-to-speech software program. You can run it off the website or download it for easy anytime access. This website is a great tool for ESOL students or resource students who cannot read grade-level content. I currently have two third grade students who read on a K5 level. I could put lessons or tests through this program so they could listen to the words instead of trying to figure it out themselves or me having to constantly read it to them.

tharris43I choose this AT to help with my "lower level" readers. I found this year that when I read the questions to the assessments to my "lower level" readers they answered correctly. It was not that they did not know the content, they had trouble with some of the words on the test. I am wondering; for students with IEPs where things must be read to them, can this AT be used instead of my voice? Hmmm! Auditory learners would benefit greatly from this tool. It gives them the opportunity to block everything else out and just listen. The feature that I like most is that it is compatible with PDFs, most webpages, and word documents. Any printed pages can be scan and used on the natural reader website. It also speaks six different languages, and the voice that reads can be changed as well. This tool would be very good to share with ELL families. This way the family can be more involved in their student's education, and learn the English language as well. However, being that the tool is free, there are probably limitations as to the amount of use one can have unless it is paid for. I would used this to aid my "lower level readers" in their research efforts. I would use this to give one on one instructions with explanation to help these same students mentioned above to get a better understanding of their assignment.

It is user friendly and requires very little training. This is an excellent choice for students who struggle with writing. Nikola BureauI would use this program with my early readers and my ELL students. It would be a great tool when we are doing research. They could copy and paste text that was too "wordy" for them to break down and listen to it using this software. They could also practice typing their sight words in a list and listen to make sure they were correct. There are definitely many ways I could use this with my students in the lab.

The floating bar makes it easy to use NaturalReader for any computer based text. Many of my students who are struggling readers would benefit from this software. It could allow students who struggle with reading to independently navigate text that is more advanced that their reading levels. It is also great for students who benefit from multi-modal presentation of material. -

Anthony CuocoA program which allows a computer to read text out loud. This can be used for either short sentences or even whole documents or novels.
This source in particular can be make a significant difference in the classroom. For ELL students or slower readers this can allow them to stay on top of the material by giving them that extra edge they need. When I originally viewed this source it very much so reminded me of Dragon speech software except this is free. Several students in my classroom are often times nervous to admit they are slow readers and can fall behind on assignments. Perhaps a voice reading with them can keep them on pace and hopefully grow their confidence in understanding academic material. -
