Sarah-Jane OskaMy Heritage is a website (and also an app that can be downloaded for the iPad) designed to create family trees to be shared and edited between family members. The full version allows videos, sound-bytes and DNA tests! The free version, however, is more than enough for a school-based task, as it allows enough storage for photos and multiple generations.
The My Heritage webpage can be used for students to build their own genealogy trees to discuss their own histories. In particular, My Heritage would help students to understand the nature and experience of immigrants in AusVELS History Levels 9 and 10.
The site would be great for a personal inquiry project, however, it should be utilised in conjunction with activities and questions that investigate migration. Another consideration that must be taken into account includes students that are not aware of their background or may not want to disclose their background.
Overall, My Heritage is a useful tool in exploring family history, and can be utilised to make history relevant and personal. -

Sara RossAudience: Anyone interested in their heritage or genealogy
Cost: There's a free version thats adequate for some use (it allows up to 250 members on your family tree). If you plan to do a long family history, or upload lots of pictures, there's also a version you can purchase.
Purpose: Myheritage allows you to build a family tree, post photos, and record information about your family members. You can create a family page, search for family members, and invite family members to join. You can also create a family calendar, and access a video-conferencing tool.
Why I love it: Myheritage is a great and easy way to get students interested in their personal histories. There are a number of great tools. If Courthouse Records and Facebook had a baby - it would be Myheritage.com. -

Page Comments

The one with by far the most web sites searched is at MyHeritage - http://www.myheritage.com/.
You have to register to use the site, but it is free. You can input a
given name and last name and the search engine will look in over 900
different databases. It takes a little time to do this, but for a
unique name it might find just the database you haven't found yet. Many
of the databases surveyed are commercial for-fee sites, but at least
you get an idea that some information may reside on those sites.
