Alex LazarI would suggest taking a look at using mod_security as a reverse proxy in front of your server. It has core rules, for DoS, Brute-force, and a bunch more.
http://www.modsecurity.org/
http://spiderlabs.github.io/owasp-modsecurity-crs/
It is free, open source, you can code your own rules, use it for 0-day patching, and much more.
There are also commercial rule sets available for those that want to purchase them. They cover more advanced stuff (DDoS, Botnet Attacks, Anti-Virus scan of file attachments, etc).
Mod_security is not hard to set up. But like anything, it does require some knowledge, patience, and trial-and-error. But you can use it with your existing Apache install or, if you're not using Apache you can install it as a reverse proxy in front of whatever you use for a web server (IIS, Nginx, Coyote). -
