Easegill - This is an outstanding relationship for Moodle & Microsoft! As a teacher and tech coordinator - I can tell you that using the web/working on the cloud is the way things are moving (like you said) - but what Microsoft does right here is that you work with the file locally...then upload. This has advantages over other systems such as GoogleDocs, which can lag significantly when working with larger files. Formatting is also not consistent across programs.

Without this, a teacher would need to make at least 5-8 clicks to log into moodle, go to the course, select the folder, and upload file. This plugin's 1-2 click combined with the ability to save directly as pdf from Office programs makes it perfect for sharing files with students via the web.

As far as Moodle as a filing cabinet? Not as a primary location just yet - mainly because there's no desktop access to the files - you essentially have to open up an Office program to access anything. Also it's limited to these two interfaces. But with how cheap it is to get huge amounts of server space, this could be the start of something it accessing/sharing files from Moodle becomes more streamlined in Moodle 2.0 - due out this year.
