David A. HaleInterface to Google, but with black background and light text, which they say saves significant energy -- and at least acts as a reminder that we should do every little thing we can to conserve energy and resources.
Premises (which I want to verify):
* Black saves energy on: LED backlit LCD, OLED, CRT
* Black does not help on CCFL backlit LCD, since backlight always on.
(But this kind of screen is being produced less and less.)
"There are significant energy savings on black websites for LED backlit LCD, OLED and CRT monitors. CCFL backlit LCD screens are not significantly affected by display color because of their constant backlight. Since 2005 manufacturers have moved away from these CCFL backlit screens. In 2013 the majority of monitor sales are LED backlit LCDs" -

John PearceBlackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
