Lee KeaneThis resource helps students to learn about elapsed time and the use of time lines. This is useful to establish duration between activities or places. Lee, Lee and Fox (2009), states the importance of using class schedules on the wall at childrens eye level, to connect their learning to real world context relating to time. This activity can be extended on in class, for example, by using a time line to determine how long they have to wait from the end of recess, 10:00am, until they have their library visit at 10:45am. Van de Walle, Karp and Bay-Williams (2010),however suggests that an open time line be used as there are a number of alternative ways that students can display their problem solving. Some may count in one, five or ten minute segments, therefore teachers need to support students working mathematically. This can also be used as a form of assessment, by monitoring where students are in their learning. This activity is appropriate for meeting Time Outcome MS2.5 (NSW Board of Studies, 2002, p. 114).
