erindulaWith this resource you can select a text such as The Gettysburg Address and choose the level of support. Interactive questions on key points and immediate feedback for the learner can be provided. You can choose minimal, moderate, or maximum support level to create deeper comprehension. I really like how students can click on vocabulary terms. There is a limited selection of texts however, so I may try to incorporate some of this strategies myself. I already create thoughtful questions for texts, but I like the idea of stopping periodically throughout the reading for this. This would make the reading more interactive and engaging. This could make difficult primary sources in my World History class more readable. I think that this resource could be useful for students with reading disabilities and ELL students because it slows the pace and allows for deeper comprehension. I would like if there was a way have the word's definition to pop up in Spanish when you click on it.

Helps to identify different literary techniques that are used throughout the text. Also, the tool provides pictures to help define vocabulary, which is helpful for low or ELL students.

teachergregThis is a very helpful tool for reading difficult material. It lets you select the amount of assistance it provides while you read the material on the screen. As you read though the material, items are clickable to obtain more information. Instead of going to a different source for assistance, it is is on the same screen. It helps with items such as vocabulary definitions and literary elements. I see this having value for all students. If a student is reading difficult material like Shakespeare, they can easily click on items to find more information. If an ELL student is using this tool, they can easily look up a word to find the meaning and continue to stay on track with the assignment. Overall this tool will keep the students engaged and focused on the material.
Example:
As mentioned above this can be used with teaching Shakespeare. The tool could be used to help students remain focused on their assignments and not frustrated. If I were to assign a poem such as Sonnet XVIII by William Shakespeare, this tool could be valuable. The students could slowly read each line and click for help if they need it. ELL students can click on the feature for the maximum amount of help and students strong in Shakespeare writing can use the feature with less assistance. This tool will even the playing field for the diverse range of students in my class.UDL editions by CAST assistance engagement focus udl literacy eBooks books cast literature tools

Kristin FioriThis website brings UDL into the classroom. It reminds me of a website that my school already uses - Razz Kids. On this website there are multiple books that students can be independently reading. Each student, no matter what reading level they are on, can be reading the same text. This website offers 3 levels of support ranging from maximum, moderate, and minimal support. Students who have more trouble with reading will not be standing out as reading an easier text to their classmates. These texts seem to be leveled somewhat high so it would be better for students who are 4th grade or higher. It would not work with my younger students. This website also focuses on comprehension rather than fluency. It does not promote students to use strategies for "word attack" when they come to a word that they don't know. Students can be assigned to use this tool at home for a homework assignment.

sharihumphreyAfter going through the site I found that it has different levels for the level of the student. It also had links for defining words and phrases that an ELL or lower leveled student would need for clarification. This site would engage the students in their learning and it has the flexibility for the teacher to have different formats of the media.

Devi VenugopalShared by Devi Venugopal. Though I did not see many books available on the site, the site would be a great tool to use with the students to teach them different techniques of reading which include predicting, questioning, summarizing, and visualizing. The level of support needed can be customized. Students can choose to read, highlight, have the document read to them and look up the meanings of underlined words. Teachers can also use this site to try and model some of their lessons the same way.
-
kellicjoneshis site was very neat in that it allowed to have as much or as little help needed per the students comfort level. They have words underlined that they could click to see the definition. Stop and think cues to help make sure they were understanding what they were reading. I would like to use this in my classroom and could see it helping those whos vocabulary and comprehension skills are low.

Students can read this story individually, as a group, and with or without teacher assistance. Then, teacher and students will discuss the story, the characters, and the different characteristics of it.

Rosalind ForberThis collection is far from a vast library, but does serve as an example of what can be done with books to make them accessible for all learners. Portions of text can be selected to be read aloud (synthetic voice), and clicking on underlined vocabulary words takes the reader to an online glossary. The book about coyotes would have been very useful to us during our animal projects, and I will add that it to the list of resources for next year.

Ms. WellsThis UDL site offers online texts that can be differentiated. Students choose between three levels of support as they read and interact with the text. It is a wonderful resource for multiple forms of expression, but it actually is a great resource for multiple means of representation too. There is a multimedia dictionary that if you click on a word you can read the definition, you can click text to speech and it can be read for you, and visual representations of the word are also provided. It does a wonderful job clarifying vocabulary using all forms of representation. I also liked that students could highlight the text as they are reading since there is so much emphasis on students highlighting specific parts of text to justify their thinking as part of preparation for MCAS. I think I would share with classroom teachers and MSN’s in my building. It would be a great, interactive, more engaging way of doing some MCAS prep that would meet the needs of all learners.
