Kathy Lawrence" The Digital Literacy course, which meets once every six days for a total of nine sessions, was originally conceived three years ago in response to the advent of our 1:1 Tablet PC initiative. For the first two years of the program, I taught what we as a middle school perceived to be essential technology skills. This year, in an effort to provide more coherence to the curriculum, I elected to incorporate a research project focused on Passion-Based Learning. Much has been written on the subject, but drawing on the work of John Seely Brown, Konrad Glogowski, Will Richardson, Lisa Nielsen and others, I’ve come to understand P-BL as an experience that empowers students to Discover and Consume, Communicate and Connect, and Create and Produce based on their deep-seated interests. In our setting, every student was exposed to the same set of indispensable skills, but applied them to the unique content of their choosing."

Earlier this year I wrote a series of posts that outlined our tentative approach to 21st century literacy. Drawing from research and frameworks developed by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, NCREL/Metri Group, and ISTE, we have identified six key literacies for our students:
