Just a quick note to help those who are trying to sync from their Firefox profile from XP to Vista and back again - Vista stores Firefox's profile in a different location than XP.
XP stores your Firefox profile here:
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\ProfilesVista stores your Firefox profile here:
C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles -
not only does it sync all of your extensions, but it also syncs almost all of your profile data. That means that your browsing session, bookmarks, themes, saved passwords, about:config settings, search engines
-
In a nutshell, each time you install a new extension on one machine (or add a bookmark, etc.), FolderShare will distribute those changes across every computer that's running FolderShare. Once you've set up Firefox synchronization with FolderShare, whenever you run Firefox on Computer A, all of the application data that Firefox uses during that browsing session will be synced to Computer B, C, etc
-
Limitations
-
can't use your browser history.
-
browsers can be run simultaneously under normal conditions, but don't be surprised to see a few FolderShare copying errors if you're running them simultaneously and installing extensions at the same time.
-
In order for FolderShare to sync, at least 2 computers need to be on with FolderShare running.
-
I use Allway Sync to synchronize my desktop and notebook. I've included the firefox profile folder in the sync and it works fine. Since I don't use both systems at the same time I don't have any issues with conflicts. As the article points out other sync software should be able to do this without the need for FolderShare unless there's a specific need.

Here's how I do it my way. I keep a copy of Mozilla Backup and a backup I've created with it of my Firefox data on Backpack or Gmail. Then, as need be MozBackup and the current copy of the backup does the business on any other PC. Limitations: Windows only; Haven't tested on a USB Fox.

I would highly recommend Zip Genius(freeware, of course).
Which, besides being a great zip utility, it has a feature to back up your Firefox and Thunderburd Profile.Plus, you can make the backup as a zip, or an .exe file, take it with you anywhere and "install" your profile on any other computer that you are using Firefox.

I use Firefox Portable (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable) under Windows. The complete profile is kept on a USB stick that I carry with me all the time (keychain).
Under Linux (or any other Firefox-capable OS ;)) just start a native Firefox instance and use the command-line option -profilemanager when you do it fr the first time; point the profile manager to the profile folder on the USB stick.
-
I currently use Foxmarks for syncing bookmarks, i have a bookmark folder called 'extensions' and anytime i install an extension i make sure i bookmark the page that it comes from (usually addons.mozilla) to this folder.
Then when im at my other computer i click on the new link in that folder and install the extension - only takes a couple of seconds. Also installing a fresh version of Firefox with these new extensions is simple, just go down the list...

I also use Firefox Portable on a USB stick (as well as OpenOffice). I've got a really cool setup using U3 LaunchPad and a free auto-loader package called Xtraveller (http://software.u3.com/ -- Find it under the utilities menu - if your USB stick supports U3 apps). I have set up LaunchPad to auto load Xtraveller which in turn auto-loads PortableApps and then Firefox Portable. All of this is takes place without a single keystroke from me.
With the addition of Keepass Portable (a password manager) which can be configured to auto-load if desired, this process pretty much ensures that my web-browsing experience is the same no matter whose computer I am on. Additionally I don't have to install any software or leave anything unwanted in someone else's cache (passwords, browsing history, etc.)

On my home PC, I have a 'normal' copy of Firefox, then I install Portable Firefox on every other machine I need to sync. I then zip up my profile directory (see Daniel's comment above for location) and upload it to a free online file hosting service like DivShare or put it on a USB flash drive or similar. I then copy this profile into the Portable Firefox profiles directory on every other machine.
This seems like a pain to do on a frequent basis, but by using the Foxmarks and Google Browser Sync it automatically syncs bookmarks, history, cookies, saved passwords and even saved tabs/windows without having to replace the profile. So, in actual practice, I find I only have to replace the Portable Firefox profile when I make major changes to my main Firefox, such as new extensions or changing browser settings. Hope this helps!

if you want to access the same profile with multiple users/multiple computers on a LAN, you can edit the profiles.ini file (located in %windir%\Documents and Settings\%user%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox), changing the IsRelative value to 0 and typing the path you want the profile to be stored at, e.g. C:\Firefox Profiles. Then just copy your existing profiles to that folder, and edit the profiles.ini file for all users/computers to point at that location.

Jason MarottiThe solution comes in the form of the Microsoft-owned folder syncing and sharing tool, FolderShare. It requires a small sacrifice, but in exchange you'll receive the complete automated extension sync we've all been dying for for.
