John CovinoThis site has been created by the University of North Carolina and provides valuable primary source information of Southern history through Reconstruction. I always enjoy first-hand accounts both for the historical insights they provide and the style of language in which they are written. This website has many such first-person accounts, including General George Pickett's personal letters during the Civil War (both before and after his famous charge), and accounts by ex-slaves and a white plantation girl. The link is http:docsouth.unc.edu/ .

Chris KarrThe usefulness of digital libraries cannot be understated in today’s world. “Documenting the American South” is such a resource. This useful website provides access to texts, images and audio files that deal with not only southern history, but their culture and literature as well. This site has at least 14 collections of books, posters, artifacts, letters, and other primary resources that can be put to good use in a classroom. It also comes fully equipped with a page that is specifically designed to help teachers. This page includes a “Teacher’s Toolkit”, a guide to citing materials from the site, other Southern Americana sources, sample lesson plans, and Digital Historical Narratives. The toolkit is specifically designed to help public school teachers, understanding that they do not always have the luxury of time. It provides a guide for creating questions based on the documents as well as sample rubrics and activities. The documents themselves can be organized by title, author, subject, date, or alphabetically. Overall I feel that this could prove to be a valuable resource in the years to come.
