"Consumers today are the No. 1 users of semiconductors; they passed over IT and government in 2004. That's a big change; prior to that period, most people developing silicon in the industry were focused on the main market--the enterprise and IT. Today, most of us are focused on the consumer market as drivers." This is a complete reversal from the beginnings of "information technology" as a discipline and as an actual department with offices, a budget, an dedicated IT staff, etc.. In those early days of IT, business sales were where the volume was for semiconductors, display hardware, printing, software, and the like, and the "home PC" was merely a profitable niche. But in today's world, the majority of the cutting edge of tech innovation has passed into the consumer sector, and this shift has left the venerable "IT department" struggling to adapt, both technologically and culturally.
