Technology in education, then, is useful only insofar as it extends our own humanity.

I asked about the idea of multiple roles in education to Twitter readers and gathered a set of them. I then took this set and went through it with the class online...The result was a unique -- and colorful -- slide show exploring the evolving education profession.

It's worth actually taking the time to list some of these roles and to talk about them in detail:

A global survey of teenagers worldwide in November ranked Chinese students at the bottom when it comes to applying creativity and imagination.

The results of both the program and survey reflect the true qualities of our teenage students and the nation's education.

My philosophy of Edu opening, "The goal of education is to enrich the lives of students while producing articulate, expressive thinkers and lifelong learners, who are socially responsible, resilient, and active citizens of the world. Education is about teaching students, not subjects. ~Slide 14

# for students, teachers and parents to use;
# for showing the workings that led to a final product (it's time we stopped covering up our learning in English, showing our working in Maths - let's get the process of learning out there for all to see, contribute to and build upon);

  • ePortfolios for teachers should resemble those useful moments of sharing in the staffroom. For students, ePortfolios should be the messy learning log or journal de bord that, frankly, not enough of them keep on paper anyway;
  • The elephant in the room, of course, is that most Learning Management Systems on the market these days and being developed by Education Ministries the world over have their defaults set to 'anti-social'

(TIM) illustrates how teachers can use tech to enhance learning for K-12 students. It incorporates 5 interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e., reflective), authentic, & collaborative. It associates 5 levels of tech integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the 5 characteristics of meaningful learning environments.

“Education is about unleashing one’s confidence. Education is learning from failure. Education is growing from experience. Education is discovering your passions then pursuing them.

Education is not rote memorization. Education is not analyzing books that have no meaning to you. Education is not wasting your time on subjects you hate. Education is not being paralyzed because your afraid to fail.”

All and all, my big three concepts for 21st century literacy are that students and teachers must be:

Effective Learners, Effective Collaborators, Effective Creators

  • All and all, my big three concepts for 21st century literacy are that students and teachers must be:

    Effective Learners

  • learning how to learn,
  • Lifelong learners are reflective, they routinely practice metacognition to think about how and why they understand what they do, and they constantly strive to look deeper at their own thinking, processes and practices. Lifelong learners are intrinsically motivated to better understand the world around them and to use that knowledge for self-improvement.

  • “We don’t become healthier by just weighing ourselves every morning.”
  • I need multiple measures in order to assess my health.
  • And yet, when it comes to measuring how healthy our schools are, too often we are simply relying on “weighing” them with only one measure

  • The following video clip is a 1940s-era news-reel style report on the latest thing, "progressive education." Beware the ideas are quite radical! Schoolwork is relevant, learning-by-doing is advocated - Dave Truss on 2008-05-21

  • First, it helps to look at the typical process of technology adoption
  • It's typically a four-step process:

    1. Dabbling.
     2. Doing old things in old ways.
     3. Doing old things in new ways.
     4. Doing new things in new ways.

  • The result was pretty much like what came before; some elements may have been lost, but the results were certainly cheaper, and far more efficient.
