New textbooks from Boundless are being released under the same license as Wikipedia. Read more on Stephen Downes website, but realize that textbooks -- free textbooks- are going to be proliferating and some may end up meeting needs quite nicely. Textbook companies are going to have to sell more than words on a page, but experiences, projects, connections, and apps to be worth the price and even then, educators will be able to cobble together their own in ways that may become very powerful. Comparing textbook only to ipad enhanced, stduents do better on Math. This isn't suprising as it differentiates but also uses multisensory learning. This study by Houghton Mifflin shows a significant improvement in math scores with the ipad version versus the textbook only.

McGraw-Hill launched its first all-digital, cloud-based textbook for the K-12 market on Monday at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference.
This is called CINCH and is a "cloud based curriculum" for K-12 math and 7-12 science. It makes everything available through a browser.

Here are Michael Thornton's student livebinders. These are textbooks written by the students. Except for the typo on Ancient Greece review, this is a marvelous example of having students build meaningful textbooks.Interestingly, Michael's livebinder puts together livebinders themselves. I'm going to be learning more about this tool and have my students use these this year.
