The "freeze track" feature is born
The Ohm Studio app has been updated this morning and among the corrections and new features there's one thing to be highlighted first of all: the "freeze track" feature is born. It's still quite... let's say... crude, but it already works and we'll be obviously improving and fine tuning it during next updates. Ohm Studio's freeze feature works in a very similar way to this same feature in other DAWs, the only difference here (and what a difference!) is that as we're talking about a collaborative workstation, any freeze feature would need to be collaborative as well. And it is.
It means that if you're lucky - and smart - enough to have, for example, an Ohmicide:Melohman distortion, and if you loaded it on a project's rack, and if your project members don't have it, now there's a way to allow them to at least listen to what you've done. Same thing if you've made a MIDI pattern for a synth that not all members own. You can easily 'bounce' that track (it's called bounce in the app but we'll soon rename it to 'freeze') to audio, and choose to play that bounced audio instead. It will sync the bounced audio to all users, who'll be also able to choose 'play bounce' - and finally listen to what they used to be unable to.
To freeze a track you have to click with the right mouse button on the track header (not necessarily on the "+" symbol) and choose "bounce". It will bounce your track to audio and syncs it automatically with all project members. For instance nothing changed for any member. But now if you - or any project member - click with the right mouse button the 'play bounce' option will be active. Select it and you'll see the MIDI pattern be replaced by an audio one (if it was already audio, it's replaced by a bounced audio). If the 'play bounce' is selected, the Gear Rack of the bounced track will be turned off. So it can also be used to save some CPU.
The 'play bounce' mode is local. Users can individually choose if they will use the bounced audio or not. So you can make a bounce to allow your partners to listen to what you've done but keep yourself working on the MIDI track. BTW, you can make how many bounces you want/need, each one will replace the previous. To go back to 'normal mode', you just need to unselect the 'play bounce' option at the right mouse menu.

De Zweedse streaming muziekdienst Spotify beleeft vandaag zijn lancering in Nederland. Eerder al ging de site live in Zweden, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Frankrijk, Spanje, Noorwegen en Finland. Vorig jaar rond de zomer zou het systeem ook in Nederland komen, maar dat ging toen niet door. Sinds die tijd zijn de verwachtingen tot ongezonde hoogte gestegen onder fanatieke muziekliefhebbers. Maar wat is het nou eigenlijk, dat Spotify? En is het de revolutie die sommige mensen er in zien? Ruilt iedereen nu massaal de piratenvlag in voor een groene vlag? 3VOOR12 duikt er in.

Hoe werkt het?
Het idee achter Spotify is simpel uit te leggen: Spotify is een streaming muziekdienst die toegang biedt tot een groot aantal liedjes. De muziekgebruiker koopt niet langer muziek, hij neemt er een abonnement op. Hij heeft niet langer mp3’s op zijn computer staan, maar streamt de tracks vanaf de Spotify-server. Het programma zelf ziet eruit als een soort iTunes (inclusief zoekvenster en afspeellijsten). Wie een liedje alsnog graag wil bezitten, kan via Spotify overigens wel gewoon het bestand aanschaffen.
Alle muziek?
Niet alle muziek, wel veel. Zo’n 8 miljoen tracks om precies te zijn. Spotify heeft alle vier de major labels – Universal, Sony, Warner en EMI – aan boord, maar ook een groot aantal independent labels, verzameld in Merlin en The Orchard. Inmiddels kan het spel beginnen: wat zit wel en wat zit niet in Spotify? Lady GaGa: ja. Muse: ja. The Rolling Stones: ja. The Beatles: nee. Radiohead? Ja, alle albums die ze voor EMI maakten, niet het laatste album dat in eigen beheer verscheen. Grizzly Bear? Wel de eerste twee albums, niet doorbraakalbum Veckatimest van vorig jaar. Een kleine steekproef leert dat zo'n 90% van de line-up van Pinkpop 2010 een vinkje achter zijn naam krijgt.
En Nederlandse muziek?
Nederlandse muziek lijkt logischerwijs nog wat ondervertegenwoordigd, al hebben bepaalde labels hun muziek al wel beschikbaar gesteld. Kleine, zelfstandige labels of artiesten die hun muziek in eigen beheer uitbrengen hebben meer moeite om hun muziek in het systeem te krijgen. Grote major label acts als Guus Meeuwis, Anouk en Kane zijn al te vinden. De catalogi van gerespecteerde labels als Excelsior, TopNotch en Dying Giraffe zijn ook aanwezig, waaronder Tim Knol, De Staat, The Opposites en De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig. Wel op Spotify: K3, Herman Brood, De Dijk, Moke en Lucky Fonz III. Niet of nauwelijks: Shocking Blue, Caro Emerald, Osdorp Posse en Silence Is Sexy. Het streven van Spotify is om ooit alle muziek beschikbaar te stellen die er is, maar daar zal nog wel wat tijd overheen gaan.

Spotify is available for Mac users with OS X 10.4 or later, Windows XPusers or later and it can also be run using the application Wine if you have a Linux based system such as Ubuntu.

Based on my own experience the adverts come along roughly every half an hour and last for around thirty seconds. Spotify consider this to be considerably less than the amount you would hear on normal radio.

SAN FRANCISCO - Muziekdienst iTunes van Apple wordt nog dit jaar helemaal en overal 'streaming' toegankelijk voor 10 tot 15 dollar per maand.
Dat verwacht Rob Reid, internetondernemer in San Francisco en oprichter van de Rhapsony-muziekdienst, die nu van MTV is.
Reid sprak met Michiel Frackers van NU.nl. Reid: ,,Apple kocht vorig jaar de streaming muziekdienst Lala voor veel geld. Dan is 1 + 1 dat Apple iTunes streaming wil gaan aanbieden.''
Logisch ook, aldus Reid. ,, Die 10 miljard songs die al verkocht zijn staan nu op een iPod of op een harde schijf thuis. Die willen al die kopers natuurlijk altijd en overal kunnen beluisteren.''
En dan een stapje verder komt de gehele muziekbibliotheek van iTunes voor een vast bedrag per maand binnen bereik van iTunes abonneees, aldus Reid, die goede contacten heeft bij de ontwikkelaars van Apple. (PO)
