When I was talking with Cyndi on the phone I remember saying, "The system actually seems to encourage differentiation not learning." The idea of something like Rock Band encourages people to learn how to play because the process is made to be fun at a rate that allows the person to gradually morph into figuring out the pattern as they deal with overcoming the blockage. The privacy of the act is also important. When I'm in front of other people I might feel more pathetic and less capable. This is why I think in our culture having a system set up where kids can take these systems in to their private room and cycle through the areas where they *want* to get better has two benefits. It allows them to move at their pace and it's self directed. America has more business leaders because we appreciate and encourage independent thought. Strictness defeats independent thinking. I'd rather kids have both.
