Are Americans a Broken People? Why We've Stopped Fighting Back Against the Forces of Oppression
A psychologist asks: Have consumerism, suburbanization and a malevolent corporate-government partnership so beaten us down that we no longer have the will to save ourselves?

Can people become so broken that truths of how they are being screwed do not "set them free" but instead further demoralize them? Has such a demoralization happened in the United States?

Do some totalitarians actually want us to hear how we have been screwed because they know that humiliating passivity in the face of obvious oppression will demoralize us even further?

What forces have created a demoralized, passive, dis-couraged U.S. population?

Can anything be done to turn this around?

Can people become so broken that truths of how they are being screwed do not "set them free" but instead further demoralize them?

Yes. It is called the "abuse syndrome." How do abusive pimps, spouses, bosses, corporations, and governments stay in control? They shove lies, emotional and physical abuses, and injustices in their victims' face

"The Unabomber's Manifesto and the Earth Liberation Front: Examining an Unconventional Movement Text to Expose the Ideology of Radical Environmentalism" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the NCA 94th Annual Convention, TBA, San Diego, CA, Nov 20, 2008 Online <PDF>. 2010-02-19 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p259431_index.html>

    Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: This study uses Simons’ “rhetorical requirements” approach to examine the “Unabomber’s Manifesto,” an unconventional social movement text that some believe helped energize the radical environmentalist group Earth Liberation Front (ELF). The study generates strong support for the belief that the manifesto served as a catalyst for the group’s activities by identifying similarities between the pro-environment, anti-technology ideology articulated in the manifesto and subsequent acts of eco-terrorism perpetrated by ELF in the United States.

    1. Zirakzadeh, Cyrus. ""Garry Wills: Democratic Conservative"" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the Northeastern Political Science Association, Omni Parker House, Boston, MA, Nov 13, 2008 Online <PDF>. 2010-02-19 <http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p276484_index.html>

    Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
    Review Method: Peer Reviewed
Abstract: Garry Wills is an influential public intellectual who for four decades has articulated a type of conservative thinking that is neither lzissez faire nor anti-democratic. This paper analyzes Wills's pragmatic critique of individualistic thinking, the religious roots of his vision of community, and his simultaneous defense of prophetic protest and admiration of morally lukewarm political leaders who seek peace, not the realization of a vision of justice. The paper draws primarily on Wills's books and articles, and peridically contrasts Wills's ideas with those of Michael Oakeshott, Leo Strauss, and Irving Kristol.

Resistances: counter-conduct, inter-disruptions and compromising acts
    February 20, 2010 - Leave a Response

An exploration of resistance can only be multiple: resistance is only and at once resistances. Any attempt to prioritize a single history or a single resistance is immediately disrupted by a multiplicity of dissenting voices and actions. In this regard, a conference is an ideal form to consider resistance, since it allows multiple approaches, each singular, but none privileged as dominant.

Located at the intersection of philosophy, cultural and political theory, this conference will consider resistances past, present and future. How can we think of resistance beyond opposition? How can compromises and contradictions be approached productively? How might an artist’s work exemplify a political act?

Panels will examine various aspects of resistance, from counter- and sub-cultural movements under state ideologies to strategies for the migration of theory into praxis. Questions will be demanded of the power of mobilization: what is the relationship between the artwork and the crowd? How does the history of the labour movement implicitly privilege a Western perspective? Notions of place will also draw our concern: how does the history or the architecture of a place inform its culture? How do counter- and post-colonial histories intersect in site-specific action? The personal conflicts of love and trauma will be discussed – how does the structure of trauma (a multiplicity of suppressed voices held under the totalizing dominion of consciousness) parallel the political formation of subaltern movements? We will look at hope, failure, love and anger. How do these expressions of affects exceed the efforts of an org

Why High IQ People Are PC
    February 26, 2010

A couple of people have asked about my comment “high IQ people are by and large easier to brainwash.” Is it really true? I think so, and will explain why.

Let’s take feminism, which along with Marxism and racial egalitarianism is one of the “big three” evils that have cursed the modern world. How might a smart person be easier to brainwash in a women’s studies course? We can look at some feminist material to see.

The University of Maryland has an archive of women’s studies syllabi. Take this paragraph from one for a class taught at the University of San Diego.

The critique of the project of liberal humanism is now widespread in feminist theory. Where liberal humanism centers on the rights-bearing individual who becomes equal insofar as she becomes like everyone else, and postulates the possibility of this individual’s achievement of “sovereignty, self-knowledge and self-mastery,” (Gross, (1990), p. 1) contemporary feminist theory has undermined this ideal of subjectivity and the concepts (sic) of equality as differencelessness. From different corners and with different effects, both poststructuralists and Third World feminists have contributed to this undermining. But this critique of modernist liberal humanism has a history that precedes contemporary feminist variants. So, in this class we will explore the tenets of modernist philosophy in order to set the stage for the critique of Enlightenment philosophy associated with both poststructuralism and feminism. This, too, is related to the question of authority and the politics of representation: what texts have authority in feminist circles? What writers represent (or can be made to represent) feminist interests?

I don’t know what your IQ has to be to understand that, but I would guess at least 110. To make sens

In defence of symbolism March 2010
    By: Laxmi Murthy

    Bilash Rai
International Day of the Boy Child, Men’s Day, Global Week of the Brahmin, World King’s Day. Ever heard of those? For obvious reasons, it is only victims who get their day. Politely called ‘subalterns’ or the ‘oppressed’, it is those who have never been allowed into the car who get to sit in the driver’s seat on this one, special day. But there are driving licenses to be got, traffic rules to be followed and, most importantly, hard cash to buy the car and petrol to run it. Not surprisingly, then, the outing is limited to a single drive. Mere symbolism, snort the cynics.

It has been a century since 8 March has come to symbolise women’s fight for equal rights. It was around that date in 1910 that women workers in cities across the US and Europe marched together demanding better working conditions and higher wages. Clara Zetkin, a leader of the German Social Democratic Party, had proposed observing a ‘Women’s Day’ to highlight their demands, and the first such gathering took place on 19 March; but for reasons obscured by the mist of time, 8 March began to be the day dedicated to women. And once the UN system adopted a resolution in 1975 to mark International Women’s Day, the acronym (a reliable sign of institutionalisation) IWD became a fixture. Spotlighting violence on women, reproductive rights, and economic and political rights, 8 March has been not only a rallying cry to mobilise women, but also an occasion on which to direct advocacy efforts towards policymakers around the world, and in Southasia as well.

No one can deny that the lobbying has paid off, with women’s studies, women’s cells, women’s colleges, women’s courts and women’s budgets being increasingly institutionalised. Indeed, the evocative term ‘women’s liberation’ has itself been replaced by the more sanitised notion of ‘gend
