The Great Gatsby is a textbook example of how social superiority may seen like the key to success and happiness, but the pursuit of it is oftentimes futile and laden with negative consequences. Jay Gatsby, whose love, Daisy, left him for a wealthier man years ago, has dedicated his life to the accumulation of wealth in the hope that it will bring Daisy back to him. Though at first he is successful (he and Daisy have a short-lived affair), his pursuit is ultimately futile. Along the road to futility Gatsby experiences many negative consequences, including the ending of his relationship with Daisy and the taking of responsibility for an accident caused by Daisy that resulted in the death of Daisy's husband's mistress. Gatsby is then killed by the mistress' husband, deeming his pursuit futile.
