There are a ton of resources I use from this site. The site does rearrange itself from time to time so you may have to search around. I use many resources such as the virtual tour, the day in the life series has a fun but hard dressing the part game, I use the link for multimedia resources and the online exhibitions. There are many resources for older students about life in Jamestown. The kids button is mostly elementary school. For middle and high school students I would use the history and teacher buttons as well as the icons along the bottom of the screen. Sometimes it is easier to type key words in the search box. I also receive a monthly subscription that highlights a different primary source from the time period each month. You can use the activities as is, as part of a webquest, or research for a project.
This resource has a lot of options for classroom use if you search through each of the links. This site focuses on the role of Ken Burns in telling the history of the Civil War and the use of primary sources. If you click on the images link there are several options like an interactive photo slide show that allows you to zoom in on aspects of the photo with information. There is a digital storytelling exercise that students can learn how to create a digital story with primary sources. The other links on the side go to many other resources like letters from the war, collections of photos and classroom activities. You can use the activities as is, as part of a webquest, or images for a project or digital story.
There are a ton of video resources and podcast on this site to select through on a variety of topics. I use this site for the videos and podcasts as part of either a web quest or virtual field trip. The Jamestown chronicle uses recordings of Jamestown reenactors portraying the real people in the recreated town. I think they make great recorded guest speakers for your field trip.
The colonial house was a television PBS series where modern people voluntarily lived as colonists in a colonial village similar to the pilgrims. The website has a virtual tour of the town as well as video and podcast diaries from the cast members on their experiences. There are also numerous other activities to learn more about life during the time period. I think the virtual field trip and audiovisual media gallery make great resources for students to learn historical context and empathy to gain perspective on the time period. These can be used in a web quest or research for a project.
This history organization has created online history teacher modlules of American History summaries with primary sources that help create a digital classroom without the need for textbooks. They also include links to podcasts and many other online digital resources that are created by other association they consider to be reliable resources. You do have to ask permission to use some of their primary source documents but not all. If you were to produce them online you may need to check with them for permission first. This site is designed for educators but the historians and organization have worked hard to collect these sources and own the rights to the use of specific documents.
This is the main website for all of the Smithsonian Museums. There are links to online exhibitions, their own interactive flicker website, as well as the broadcast of the Smithsonian channel that has many great history topics for episodes. There is also a data base to use to search for resources by topic and standards. Each Smithsonian Museum also has their own website with lots of addition resources I recommend using. Two of their other websites I use are the Nation History Museum website which has lots of American History Recourses such as the lesson explorer. Another museum I use is the National American Art Museum. Here you can search their collections, zoom in on art, and make appointments for virtual conferences for guest speakers. There are a lot options for how you can use this website for information or projects.
