The iPad is being trialled in a large number of schools and educational settings across Australia. This theme page provides links to school trials, app review sites, blogs by teachers using iPads and a range of other useful resources for iPads in and out of the classroom.
The aim of the iPad Pilot Program is to evaluate the role of the iPad in supporting learning and teaching in today's world.
This website is for educators who want to learn about using iPads in education. Here you will find
information about the Victorian school iPads for Learning trial including specially selected apps,
classroom ideas and technical tips.
. I have set up this site as I believe the iPad signals the opportunity for a transformation in how technology is used in schools, colleges and universities. I am interested in looking at all age ranges across all areas of the curriculum and keen to see if the iPad makes technology cross-curricular as it should be.
Much ado about nothing
Fitzsimmons points out that, far from jumping on the gadget bandwagon, Brighton Grammar School, with help from its innovation arm the Crowther Centre, decided to buy the iPads purely as a research tool. “I guess that before we go putting them onto school booklists we want to see how useful they’re going to be. We didn’t go down the route of the one to one laptop program and I think that’s been a good decision.”
The gadgets will be used with Year 1, 3 and 6 students and the research is expected to last at least two years. It’s hoped the app development course for senior students will eventually be integrated into the mainstream curriculum. Fitzsimmons is also looking at monitoring students to compare the way they read an online document such as an eBook and a traditional textbook.
We'll use this space for the iPad Literacy project. There are so many ways that an iPad can support learning in the classroom. Here are some of the most obvious.
Each of these education and productivity apps offers students a platform that will help them to manage the many tasks that they encounter during the course of their studies. Digital Storytelling can transform your students' writing into a visual masterpiece that is filled with voice and emotion, while enhancing critical thinking skills. The iPad takes digital storytelling to a new level by making the process easier, and even more engaging for students of all grade levels as well as for their teachers.

Background information
As part of the iPads for Learning trial we selected a range of apps to get teachers and students started using their iPads in school. The apps will be explored to determine their teaching and learning potential and their accessibility in a range of learning environments.
The education apps have been selected to get students connecting, communicating and creating.
The apps are arranged into broad categories to provide a starting point for thinking about how they might be used by students, however many of the apps have multiple uses across a number of learning domains.
This site will be both a support site for my presentations about iPad use for teaching and learning and it also includes links to other iPad information pages.
I hope you find it useful!
A growing number of schools across the nation are embracing the iPad as the latest tool to teach Kafka in multimedia, history through “Jeopardy”-like games and math with step-by-step animation of complex problems.
Conventional wisdom says that loaning Apple’s bestselling iPad to college students would be a popular move. A seven-week-long study by the University of Notre Dame found that students did indeed like learning with the tablet computers, but that they used the devices differently than was expected. The students also identified some drawbacks of bringing iPads into the classroom, such as the difficulty of taking notes on the tablet.
The iPad is especially helpful for many teachers. There are a number of iPad apps designed to help teachers prepare for class. The iPad is portable, so it makes it simple to take with you wherever you go. Here are 20 iPad apps for teachers
There is no doubt to anyone who has used an iPad or any tablet for that matter that they show a clear alternative to teaching learning in the classroom beyond laptops, screens and monitors. The iPads simplicity of use and massive range of apps give it a great deal of appeal as a teaching and learning tool and the future looks bright for this trend to continue.
There are three things I like most about the iPad for teaching and learning:
1 – it is not an expensive and heavy laptop that teachers feel pressured to use in every lesson, it is a personal assistant for the student and teacher that can easily be hidden in a school bag.
2 – it lies flat on the desk so that a teacher can easily see what is on the screen while walking around the classroom.
3 – it boots up instantly, very handy when lesson time is really valuable.
