V. Marie Moore's List: R J REYNOLDS

    • In May 2003, Esther Johnson presented a program on   African American presence at the Reynolds Homestead.  She gave us insight   into the Reynolds, from Abram, who came to Patrick County in the early 1800’s   to his son William harden who married Nancy Jane Box and had 16 children   including R. J., the founder of R. J. Reynolds.  They owned 8,000 acres   of land, and started Rock Springs Plantation (now called The Reynolds   Homestead) in the 1840’s and added on to it later.  It includes two   cemeteries, the Reynolds family cemetery and the slave cemetery located across   the road in front of the house that includes 61 graves.  The June 2003   meeting was an outing to The Reynolds Homestead with a covered dish picnic   meal.
    • The Reynolds property, near Critz, Va., includes the 1843 national historic landmark homestead, an ice house, a spring house, a granary, a summer kitchen, a slave cemetery, and the Reynolds family graveyard, where Virginia Lt. Gov. J. Sargeant Reynolds is buried.
    • Virginia was established as an economic venture that got off to a very shaky start. In 1584 Queen Elizabeth I of England gave Sir Walter Ralegh (commonly misspelled Raleigh) permission to establish colonies in the New World. Gallantly, Ralegh named the area for the Virgin Queen, but undersupplied his colonies, which disappeared between one supply ship's arrival and the next.
    • In 1612, John Rolfe began experiments in growing and processing tobacco. His export of tobacco to a London merchant in 1614 began a trade that made Virginia viable economically.
