Part experimentation, part self-help, such "personal informatics" projects,...find meaning in the mundane.

believe that the compilation of our daily activities can reveal the secret patterns that govern the way we live.

the practice is liberating because it shows that our lives aren't random, and are more orderly than some might expect.

"I want to create connections where I didn't know that they existed," Mr. Felton says.

The culture of sharing information online has shifted in recent years, from a focus on blog ramblings to the ubiquitous micro-movements of posters' daily lives.

Personal data collection can get in the way of living, some people admit. "It becomes an obsession," says Toli Galanis

-Might be looking for patterns where there is none. Influenced by some latent force from an unhealthily heightened self-awareness, because of this deliberate documentation, that causes the person to unknowingly do things to fit a pattern, instead of freeing themselves to act naturally.
-SOCIAL MEDIA in enabling people to post minute mundane details of their lives (presumably to an imagined audience who cares)
-but then it is also true that people actually follow such postings
-gives a whole new dimension to being a snoop, a kind of invasion of privacy that is sanctioned happily by the person in question, and prying into people's lives
-is it really that interesting? actually it is. (to read about mundane stuff e.g. on Twitter, like "is drinking mocha frap at starbucks now" etc)

    • Part experimentation, part self-help, such "personal informatics" projects
    • find meaning in the mundane.
