Instead, ambitious criminals are embracing cybercrime, and thieves and the software they use are getting smarter, harder to combat and easier to access online.

That allows the thief to stay much more hidden than in the past. Hackers also now use entire servers that are customized to target individual banks. • Before the Internet, criminals had to dig through people's trash or intercept their mail to steal their personal information. Now that all of this information is available online, criminals also use the Internet to steal people's identities, hack into their accounts, trick them into revealing the information, or infect their devices with malware.

• It's very difficult to crack down on cyber criminals because the Internet makes it easier for people to do things anonymously and from any location on the globe. Many computers used in cyber attacks have actually been hacked and are being controlled by someone far away. Crime laws are different in every country too, which can make things really complicated when a criminal launches an attack in another country.

• In the United States, virus laws date back to the 1980s, with the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. This law criminalized the distribution of computer code created or used for criminal purposes. The legislation also included virus laws that made it illegal to distribute code if the distributor’s intent was to cause economic loss or damage.
• Japan enacted virus laws in 2011 against spreading viruses and spam. Other countries have toughened laws against cybercrime. In the Netherlands, the country’s 1993 Computer Crime Act was updated in 2006.

• Computer pirates copy, distribute and use software created by others without permission. In contrast, computer hackers try to access computers without permission. Once hackers gain access, they may install harmful software, reveal confidential information or simply brag about their accomplishments to other hackers. Piracy and computer hacking carry serious consequences for everyone.
• For perpetrators, piracy and computer hacking often leads to pursuit and incarceration. Some perpetrators remain in jail for multiple years. In addition, hackers and pirates also can face fines. Even if they succeed in defending themselves in court, they can face hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorneys' fees. Their reputations may never fully recover.
