Usmile atme's List: Objective 028: Know the Presentation, Causes and Management of Shock

  • Aug 19, 12

Sooby Says:This article is designed for ambulance technicians rather than doctors, but does contains some excellent information about the classifications of shock syndromes and the stages of hypovolaemic shock (although remember respiratory rate can be raised in the 1st stage of shock!). You will need to know more information about how to manage shock than this article provides.

Sooby Says: When discussing types of shock, one must be aware of the classes of haemorrhagic shock. This table comes from full paper on the pathophysiology and managment of haemorrhagic shock, but is a great simple way of noting at which point different vital signs become derranged in shock. Note that respiratory rate is the most sensitive marker of haemorrhagic shock!

Sooby Says: This presentation on shock is a quite good synopsis and covers most of the bases. But it’s true value lies in the sections of the presentations of different types of shock. It doesn’t cover all of the different types of shock but does cover the most common types (septic, haemorrhagic and cardiogenic). Also interestingly is the slide of the Swann-Ganz pressure readings and the differences between the different types of shock. Not core knowledge, but still interesting.
