"According to psychotherapist Joanna Poppink, spending time in an outdoor cafe or bustling shopping street is more than just a pleasant diversion, it is a necessary elemnt of healthy urban life. She believes that much of the fear and distrust experienced by urbanites is directly related to a lack of open public spaces where different groups can interact, "If we don't leave the house, we fill ourselves up wtih fantasies created from television and our own fears." In contrast when you're "out in the real world, you get to see people as they really are: different ages, different races, different relationships that you can observe firsthand" ( morgan 1996, 59)

"Places can, and should, be responsive to out pragmatic needs: If we need to see out, there should be a window...Places also can and should allow us to ecpress who we are..And places can and must express and affirm the value of each individual and our collective place in balance with the natural forces and other living species of the planet. Places root us-- to the earth, to our own history and memories, to our families and larger community."
