In rabbinic literature human beings are understood to be born morally neutral, possessing both a good inclination, called the yetzer ha-tov, and a bad inclination, called the yetzer ha-rah. The two inclinations are both necessary; they work in tension with one another keep a human being motivated but also properly walking on God's path by observing halakhah, Jewish law.
