WWI was caused by nationalism
WWI was caused by nationalism. When the war was declared on Germany, people burst out on the street celebrating in France, Britain etc. If the population did not support this war, the government might not have started this war!
Actually, WWI was the result of a long string events dating as far back as the late 1800s: Many Balkan conflicts & European super power's alliances were the main causes.
Actually, WWI was the result of a long string events dating as far back as the late 1800s. In short, lots of conflicts in the Balkans and the European superpowers making alliances with each other were the main causes. Germany had a huge role in this. They fought for the independance of Morrocco in an attempt to break of the alliance between France and Britain. Germany also participated in an arms race. Kaiser Willian II started building up a navy, trying to surpass the on eof Britain. Since Britain was an island nation, it had a gigantic navy, and what Kaiser Willian II was attempting to do was no easy feat. Germany also noticed that many of its neighbours had many colonies overseas. It then decided that it wanted a piece of the action, but by then, all the good colonies were taken. All this helped fuel the fire that was WWI.

1. Germany? The peace treaty (at Versailles) placed the blame on Germany, and the Allies firmly believed that German aggression was at the root of the conflict.
2. Someone else? Austria - whose Archduke had been assassinated? Serbia - who backed the terrorists who killed the Archduke, and refused to cooperate with Austria? Russia, whose mobilization made the war inevitable? All the western powers, who had been pursuing a dangerous course for decades?
3. Answer: hard to say. Germany did not plan the war, but pursued policies that they knew risked war. In fact, it seems likely that no one planned the war, with the possible exception of Serbia. Let's look at some of the root causes.

Germany feared that she would face attacks from both Russia and France. Germany demanded Russia to stop her mobilization at once. Russia refused. Germany at once declared war on Russia on August 1.
According to the Schlieffen Plan , Germany had to attack France at once. Germany sent an ultimatum to France demanding her to be neutral. After receiving a French reply that France would side with Russia, Germany lost no time and declared war on France on August 3.
