An important update to the official Kindle app for iOS (free and universal for iPhone and iPad) was released earlier today. Version 2.5 of the app adds much requested features that should satisfy all the Kindle users on the iOS platform that have been asking for functionalities such as proper multitasking support and access to the free Internet archive of Project Gutenberg books.
Kindle 2.5 for iOS, in fact, can now download books in the background leveraging iOS 4 APIs and supports thousands of ebooks downloaded through Project Gutenberg. Most of all, the app can now load files from any other iOS app thanks to the “Open in” feature seen in Safari, Mail and any other iPhone or iPad app that can forward files to other applications that can open a specific file type. This means you can now add your own files to the Kindle app, or even better drag & drop files into it using iTunes’ File Sharing. To add books in this way, simply connect your device to iTunes, head over the Apps tab in the device’s info screen, and drag files onto the Kindle section right below the iOS Springboard preview window. The bad news is that, like the actual Kindle, epub books don’t seem to be supported at this time.
On June 28, 2007, Nokia was the top selling mobile-phone company in the world, people stopped working when they left their computers, Android phones didn't exist, and high-powered executives were addicted to thumbing on their BlackBerrys.
At $600, it was a luxury item at first. But five years later, the phone's dramatic impact can be seen in our daily lives, schools, factories and boardrooms. To date, more than 217 million iPhones have been sold, and they're being used by construction workers to read blueprints, doctors to diagnose patients, governments to improve services and parents to quiet their kids in restaurants.
To ring in its 5th birthday, here are five ways the iPhone has made a mark on the world.
I like to figure out the fastest way to do things. I hope these keystrokes help you to become the power user that lies within. They should work on most versions of Mac OS (10.7 Lion, 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.5 Leopard, and even 10.4 Tiger). I’ll be adding more 10.7 Lion keystrokes, so check back!
I found an extremely versatile tool called MultiTouchTool:
It seems extremely well made in general, especially for a .5 alpha?
Anyways, it lets you remap gestures (and adds tons of new ones too). The program comes with another awesome perk: maximizing windows like in windows 7: drag a window to the top edge and it will maximize.
iOS (Jailbroken): Have you ever gotten a notification on your iPhone and wished you could just see the last few words of the message instead of having to open up the app? Reveal will make your lock screen and banner notifications scrollable and expandable, so you you can read the whole thing at a glance.
It took a good while before iOS 5 received its first jailbreak, but now that you've jailbroken your compatible iDevice you need to know all the great apps and hacks it can handle. Here's a look at some of our favorites available in Cydia for iOS 5.
As it generally goes, you can do a lot more if you jailbreak your iPhone (or other iDevice). Data privacy is no exception. If you don't want to make any compromises, there's a very simple way to selectively lock down pretty much anything on your device. It's a jailbreak tweak called Applocker.
There are a few apps and tweaks that should be automagically installed when one jailbreaks their iDevice. Activator is one of them. Made by Ryan Petrich (@rpetrich), this tweak allows one to change the behavior of all buttons, and more on their iDevice. Example: my wife's first gen iPhone recently had a fall, which broke the sleep button and ringer switch. It was no big deal though, I simply made the event "Home Button - Short Hold" toggle the ringer (via an SBSettings toggle) and a "swipe across the status bar to the left" lock the device. If I had left her iPhone like Steve Jobs wants it, we would have been shopping for a new phone and hawking a now unusable iPhone on the eBayz.
Using Activator is a breeze. Once installed, it resides in your iPhone's Settings app under a new category called Extensions. If you want to change an event system-wide, tap on Anywhere (pictured to the right). Otherwise, an event can be made to work normally everywhere else, but differently when an app is in focus, or when at the lock screen, or homescreen. The benefit for specifying which scenario the event will work in is so, for example, one could have a long press of the sleep button start playing music when at the lock screen (even if the screen is off) but have it pull up the "Now Playing" controls everywhere else.
In the early days of jailbreaking, the benefits weren't always that great. Nearly four years into the debut of iOS, however, the jailbreaking community has matured into something amazing. If you've neglected to jailbreak your iOS device, there's no better time than now. Here's why you should take the plunge and how to get the most out of it once you do.
Apple doesn't allow you to easily access the file system of your iPhone, but there are so many useful things you can do with it—like customize your app icons or back up all of your game saves, without even having to jailbreak. Our favorite file explorer for the iPhone is i-FunBox, for its easy-to-use interface and handy shortcuts. Here's what we like about it, along with all the cool things you can do with it.
Whether you're looking to load up a new iPhone or simply expand your collection, here's our 2012 list of download-deserving apps.
